Xtra Vision Forces Bundles!?

Was just in my local Xtra Vision today, and since I have one of my three pre-bookings on the PS3 there I asked if they knew anything about the launch they will be doing. The manager told me that they will only be selling them in bundles.

I don't really mind either way I have three options to choose from and whatever one suits me most I'll go with.I'm planning on getting games anyway so there should be at least one bundle I'll want.

    Thoughts?

Yeah, it's been that way for a few months, it's out of our hands, Sony are forcing the bundles.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony are forcing the bundles since the selling of software is the only way they are going to make back the massive loss on the PS3 but I kind of doubt it.

As a complete begrudger I hope they force Happy Feet and some other licensed muck on you :p

I wouldn't mind a bundle that entailed Sonic The Hedgehog and/or Ridge Racer 7.
I had no idea that Sony were behind the bundles.
Not surprised but I just didn't know that.

    If it's a port of the 360 game then I wouldn't bother.

    Really projectmayhem?
So it's just the stores then yeah?
I don't really care either way to be honest but I still want to know who is to blame? And how do you know it's not Sony?

    And Retrogamer,
I liked the 360 version, and I'm holding out hope that there will be at least some miner tweaks to the PS3 version, if not why isn't it released on it already? It was originally planned for both consoles so why would there be a delay?
Lot's of the recent Sonic titles have gotten bashed when it came to scores but I still loved them so no worries.

Anyone know the total price of these bundles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

I don't know yet, I'll ask in my local tomorrow.
    I would guess around €800-850.

Sony, despite the last year of PR, are trying to pro-actively keep costs down. i already said somewhere on these forums that they wanted to charge about €60 for games, but retailers were having none of it (they get a sexy markup on 360 games, ps3 will be more popular in ireland.. why loose out?), so the idea of forcing people to pay €100 extra on top of an already expensive console is bad news for sony, especially since the reaction to that extra €30 in tax.

I used to work in Sony so i still keep in touch, and know some of the higher-echelons in there, so i get to know this kind of stuff. i now work in the magical world of xtra-vision, and thus far there's been no word about bundles at all. but if bundles do happen, they won't be forced (xtra-vision has never forced bundles before, no reason to start... there's already a good record for high attach rates to new machines in ireland as it is). it's bad PR to force bundles. just look at the 360 and PSP launches when people were forced to buy games in smyths and gamestop. there was outrage (ish)..

I never usually buy consoles in Xtra Vision so I wouldn't know.
But my friend who was with me at the time asked what if people refuse to buy it bundled, and the manager told him then you're more than welcome to your deposit back.

I know the manager and she is usually quite nice, I don't know maybe she was taking the piss but she seemed quite serious, If I don't like the deal I get with Xtra Vision I have two other alternatives anyway so no worries.

i'd say she was told something by a part-timer that read some stuff on the web because xtra-vision haven't sent any documentation to stores stating anything like that at all, and managers haven't had their "here's how to sell a playstation" meeting yet

Which console will retailers make the most money off??

Lets say I am a manager of a store. A lady comes in and asks me "which console should I buy for my children?"

Me being totally greddy says buy the X its the best console by far.

What is console X. Does the store make the most money from a PS3, a Wii or a 360.

would a store make 20 quid on a Wii, 50 on a 360 and 100 on a PS3 or am I way off the mark.

I suppose I am asking what's the mark up on each console?

    Hope that's clear anyway

the mark-up is more on 360 or ps3, though for both i'd imagine it's the same. but as i said before, the markup on games is higher for ps3 because sony want to sell at a lower price, but stores want to keep it at 360 levels to make more money from consumers.

the prices on xbox 360 games are coming down

i was in gamestop the other day and saw brand new 360 games for 70 euro

they were 75 euro before or am i mistaken

    big difference ehh:rolleyes:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭andyps2.5

I don't think any company will make much profit on the main unit because most people know the price. It's the games and accessories we have to worry about.

€57 to €69 - the average console makes about 9 to 11 % at retail..

I already have, but I have three other bookings also and they are all refundable so no worries eh?;)

That may leave 2 PS3's on the shelf after launch.. may being the operative word.

    That's fine by me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

I'm going to check with all my mates first about whether or not they want/need my other pre-bookings, then I'll check if anyone here wants one, and if no one does then I'll get my money back.

well it's been €70 or €75 since launch iirc. some titles go for €70, but if it's a major title (gears, for example), it'll start off at €75

very good chance the guy hadn't a clue. xtravision staff/managers have had no information on the ps3. even this week the documentation simply said that pre-orders are still to be taken and that the system is out in "march" (no specific date otherwise). how these guys are saying there's bundles is beyond me... especially since xtravision has never forced bundles in the past. yeah, sold them alright, but it's never been a case of HAVING to buy it.

as of yet, no one knows how many machines each company gets. but usually, sony (or microsoft/nintendo in this situation) deal with whoever has more pre-books. they'll look favourably on xtravision anyway because xv sells a lot of software & hardware for them, and have done deals in the past to reach targets in exchange for preferential treatment. there were targets on PSP's over quarter4 2006, which xtra-vision blazed through.

If Sony are sending most to the people with the most pre-books, how come GAME on Dawson street have taken no pre-books yet?
Yet the manager said they're talking to Sony now about how many units they will be getting before taking pre-books.I am number one on their list for a pre-order as soon as they're taking them.I have great confidence that GAME will be the place I'll get my PS3.But if what you're saying is true then that probably won't be the case.

Release Date March 23rd, Price 629.99

Xtra-Vision - Bundles only(no info as regards bundle content yet)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Yeah we know the release date and price, where did you hear about Xtra Vision only offering bundles? If it's from a manager then that's two managers that have said this now.

Sony haven't figured out allocations yet. with the date announced i'd say all the allocations will be sorted by mid-feb, so gamestop, xtra-vision and anyone else will be going to sony with x amount of pre-orders (which are guaranteed sales, basically) so as to get some preferential treatment with shipments. it's just a bargaining chip. it puts Sony into a corner because it's them who gets the blame if a member of staff turns around and says "eh, well Sony never sent us enough...".

not sure why game are doing that. maybe they already have something organised with Sony...
Xtra-Vision - Bundles only(no info as regards bundle content yet)

source? i asked my district manager and he says there's no plans he's aware of for that system. he says there'll probably be bundles, but they'll be the same as the 360 christmas ones... they're there, good value but you're in no way forced to buy one if you don't want to. he also told me the total number of irish pre-books in xtra-vision... it's a lot :)

Spoke to the manager one of the city centre Game stores during the week. Apparently they will have confirmation this coming week on their allocation. He's reckoning on 100+ units. Will be taking pre-books once they have allocation confirmed.

I personally think that if the 1million units Sony are promising for launch materialize, there may not even be a need to pre-book.....

well in game up in belfast they are pre booking on a ps3 60gb gears of war+ singstar+accesiore (sorry about spelling) pack all for just £465.99 (pre booking of £65.98 incl) very cheap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

    A PS3 with Gears?Now that's news to me..:D
And GAME said they don't want to take more pre-orders than they're getting consoles. The GAME manager also said the Dawson street branch will get around 100 consoles.
And he also said Sony will most likely be funding them for a midnight launch.
He said nothing is definite but it's likely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭andyps2.5

Isn't Gears of War an xbox exclusive. I didn't see it on any ps3 launch title list or coming soon list. Nah after the advertising gears did for the xbox it has be exclusive. It might go to the pc in a couple of months but thats another issue.

I don't know about that I've met plenty of people wanting an xbox. Anyways regardless of whether sony needs to pre-book here in Ireland or not people are going to need pre-book anyway if they want their ps3 in march.

No....Retailers only make €12 out of the Wii so god knows what they make on the PS3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭andyps2.5

If you mean profit I don't think it would be much. Sony made the ps3 which cost a lot of money. Retailers probably won't make much profit till after a month or so.

confirmation that xtra-vision are only selling the PS3 as bundles, going at 799euro. not sure what games or extras will be in the bundles. We have a target of 14 pre books with none so far :D

    buy a wii guys! :D

2 games and an extra controller.

i inquired about it being a forced bundle the other night and was told you can buy it on its own, but that was a drink-induced night so i'll have to re-affirm this.

100% confirmed, xtra-vision are not forcing bundles. they'll simply be available for people who want them.

all the managers were at a meeting before the party on tuesday, were told bundles only,so our manager said. and i think it has been in the SAP for the last few weeks saying it would only be bundles, but no mention of prices etc. Ill check this weeks sap out tomorrow but as far as I was told we are only selling bundles.

i texted my manager earlier to ask and that's what he's told me, and our store is one of the bigger game retail stores in dublin.

I'll ask the manager in my local again today, I haven't been in since I started this thread so it could have changed.Or each store could be doing it differently.

    EDIT:

Was just in my local XV, they will be able to fill all pre-orders and they have bundles but won't be forcing them, only catch being you have to buy the console and at least one game.
And if you do not claim your console within 5 days it will be taken and re-allocated.

wasn't aware of the "you must buy 1 game" thing. you wont catch me forcing that on anyone.

and the 5 days thing is down to the number of 360's held for people that never came along (despite their deposit)...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Yeah, well this is a manager so she probably just wants as much as she can get from the launch. And fair play for not forcing it yourself!:)
At this stage I'm not sure If I'll be getting my PS3 with GAME or Xtra Vision as both have guaranteed me a console on the day.
