    50cc Peugeot Vivacity
Seems to be a very popular model, mainly for girls

10,000km in 2 years and it's starting to show it's age but then again my plan is to run it into the ground before I upgrade

That's an impressive 13.69 metres per day...

For the days when I'm not using the Cooper S, or the Duke, I have a Peugeot TKR 50cc moped. It's so easy going to the city (I live 10 mins from the city by scooter), and I don't have to worry about scumbags sitting on it when I come back. It cost me absolutely nothing, it's 00 reg, and has 10k on the clock.

I've got the same, definitely a head turner as scooters go...

Is it just me, but the expression "drive a bike" makes my teeth grind

You drive a car. You RIDE a bike, doesn't matter how big or small it is or whether it's got gears or not, it's still a totally different experience and mindset from driving a car

The fact that you calculated that shows you clearly have too much time on your hands

I have a '05 Peugeot Jetforce 50 WRC which replaced a piece of crap 50cc Suzuki.

My first "twist & go" was an Aprillia SR50. Loved it until it started to fall apart.

Suzuki was painfully and in some cases nearly dangerously slow, even after derestriction.

Old Aprillia used to top out at 65mph, where as the Peugeot goes 'off the clock' (ROTFL) at 50.....

Cheap insurance, cheap tax, free parking and gets me to town in half the time the bus takes.

did you do a riding test or a driving test to get your bike license?

When I did the car test they were testing my ability to drive the car... when I did the bike test they were testing my ability to ride the bike, so it WAS a riding test!

The fact that most people would incorrectly call it a 'driving test' doesn't make it right :D

Motorbikes / cars are self propelled = you drive them
Bicycles need human interaction to provide the force for them to move = riding

    Now for something on topic,

Scooters are sh!te, get yourself a real motorbike :D

Give them time. I started off on a 125cc scooter and am now driving a ... 500cc scooter. And I'd get a bigger one if/when they come out. (I don't like the current Honda 600cc or Suzuki 650cc). Otherwise I'll have to trade up to clutches, footbrakes and other nonsense.

Actually, I'd get one of these if it's released next year: http://www.gizmag.co.uk/go/4712/

Kinda blurs the lines between bikes and scooters.

Interesting use of the English language KTRIC :)

Hmmm I don't propel a horse so would I be 'driving' it? (Although you can drive a herd of cattle...)

Things with enough wheels to not fall over (cars, horse and cart) are driven. The point being that you don't have to balance it, just steer.

Things with not enough wheels to stop them falling over, or no wheels at all are ridden! You don't steer so much as change the direction of falling over into the direction you want to go in :) I suppose that's the point (if there is one), in a car you just sit down on your a$$ and steer, riding any bike is a much more complicated process than that.

I think it's just stupid to malign any powered two wheeler for their choice of machine. Remember that budget and insurance are big factors for riders (you wouldn't really call them drivers, would you? :D ) starting out. You shouldn't be slagged off just because you can't afford your dream machine as your first machine (bad idea anyway as sooner or later you WILL drop it.) Gears or no gears, who cares, only problem is if you do the test without gears you're stuck with that.

Been driving habana/mojito custom for years, first a 50cc and then a 125. I've upgraded to a "proper" bike, honda shadow, but I still have the 125 habana(though I have it up for sale) and drive/ride it quite a bit. I don't feel quite as manly when I do but it's great fun and much better in bad weather.

you can't beat the aul moped,i've been driving:D my mojito 50 custom for a few years and its dead handy,i'm only a 10 minute commute from my work in lucan and 49cc is just perfect,no fiddling with clutch and gears, just start her up and away you go. i do get some funny looks from other bikers when i'm at lights etc, reckon they think i'm on a moped pretending to be a bike(bullhorn handlebars/big headlight) but i love her and at the end of the day we're all on 2 wheels and should stick together:cool:

Ive had four an I flippin loved them , had 2 Honda X8RX`s a honda X8RS and my first one was some kind of 80cc Suzuki piece of crap , I literally drove that til it stopped and wouldnt go again.
Gotta say Im a huge scooter fans so cheap to run and park , Sold the peds anyway and got meself a Punto , but na Im not really a car person so Im off shopping for a CBR 250 tomorrow , cant flippin wait :D , Had a few lessons now an Im finding it hard enough to go from using the left hand as a break plus I gotta say Im a total pussy an my clutch hand really needs building up but sure feck it.

All scooter lovers go to Italy . its scooter heaven , I was there over the summer and it made me moisty .....in my panties :o

I was in Rome in November and the scooters are everywhere, and boy did I want one.

I'm about to move to a bike, some 125 or other. Would i be right in saying that if I want to keep riding scooters i will eventually have to get a a1 or A licence so will have to do a test on a geared bike?

Oh and I have a yahama aerox.... It's got no acceleration but i like it!

The short answer is no. Isn't there a sticky on bike licensing? Anyway...

If you have a full car licence (class B) you automatically get class M - mopeds up to 50cc but restricted to a top speed of 45km/h (few if any 50ccs are restricted to that speed, if not you must get an A1 or A licence)

If you're over 18 and have no bike licence you can apply for either A1 (125cc) or A (any cc), the provisional covers you on bikes with or without gears. NB NO carrying passengers on a provisional licence!

But if you do the test on an automatic, your full licence will be restricted to autos only.

(Power restrictions apply to provisional A and for 2 years after getting the full A licence, but that's another whole kettle of fish I'll not go into here.)

If you pass the A1 test you will be limited to 125cc forever and have to start again with an A provisional if you ever want to move up in cc :(

    So my advice is...

    1. Get Class A provisional (assuming you're over 18) having done theory test & eyesight report if necessary

    2. Buy whatever machine you like - 50, 125, bigger, auto or gears, whatever suits your budget and what you can insure. Though starting out on a Fireblade probably isn't wise

    3. Apply for test straight away, GET TRAINING and practice as much as you can on your own bike as well. This should give you good 'roadcraft' but you will still be lacking clutch&gears technique if your bike is an auto.

    4. If your own bike is an auto, get several lessons on a geared school bike once you know your test date to get your clutch&gears technique down (not too hard if you're confident on an auto already)

    5. Take your test on a geared bike over 150cc. Pass test and you are now licensed for life to ride any cc, geared or manual, bike you like (but power restriction applies for first two years)

    6. In time, trade up your bike as your taste & budget allows

    7. Enjoy!

I had an Italjet Dragster D50LC when I was 31. Never owned a scooter until last year (been riding all sorts of motorcycles since I was 19. I got it very cheap, that's the only reason I bought it. It was fine for communting to work on as it was de-restricted and could clock 85kph on the flat.

But it was pish up hills with my fat frame on it so I either had to stop eating pies or go back to a more appropriate motorcycle. I sold the moped at a profit and bought a Honda CD250U.

Twist 'n' go scooters are fine when the transmission is in tip-top condition, but when the variator rollers flat-spot, belts wear and clutches go, it starts getting dangerous come out of junctions / onto roundabouts. That and the pisstrickle of a headlight with no main beam make things hairy at night.

If I was forced kickin' and screamin' into buying another one it would either have to be a 250cc + super scoot to haul my lardy erse, or a scooter with manual gears.

    Just my tuppence worth,
    Mac P

oh, and if you go to http://world.honda.com/Tokyo2005/dn01/ and watch the video, I challenge anyone to tell me they haven't sampled Riverdance in the music.........LOL !

Manual gearchanges for commuting are just so, so.......passe, man.......

I drive a Suzuki Burgman 125. Have had 2 Yamaha Aerox 49 ccs before and have also had a Gilera Runner 49cc.

As for the whole riding/driving jibberish I read. The engine drives the bike/car, you are in fact controlling the vehicle!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 522 ✭✭✭comer_97

    Kenny,

what's the acceleration like on the Burgman compared to the Aerox. I'm trading in the Aerox because the lack of acceleration make some roundabouts a bit dodgy!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,249 ✭✭✭✭Kinetic^

Yeah it's decent enough. You'll notice a difference from the aerox anyway and sure you'll hit about 110/115km/h on the M50 (if you've got your full licence that is) so it's good for long boring roads too.

Well I got mine 3 years ago and have had minimal problems with it. I think the cost of it new was €4,200 and it's a group 2. Tis spacious enough inside as well as you'll fit 2 helmets in there and sure if you get a GIVI box on the back then you can leave your jacket and other gear in that. I bought it for all of the above reasons......especially the storage space. Otherwise I would've bought a majesty.
