monkey nuts

    I'm trying to lose weight and have been drinking water and eating monkey nuts from the shell as snacks. Does anyone know the nutritional content of raw, un-salted monkey nuts and the calories per 200g bag (theres nothing on the packagaing)

    They are usually about 550kcal per 100g when shelled, your bag probably includes the shell weight so I am not sure. They are nutritious but a poor choice for weight loss, they are about 50% fat and very high in calories. Usually recommended for weight gain!

    Try eating 6 evenly sized meals per day at fixed intervals, they should be about the same in calorie size, though breakfast can be more.

    Eating regular meals does a few things.
    1. Increases your metabolism, your system will not slow down or speed up thinking it has too little/too much.
    2. Reduces stomach size- you never eat enough for the stomach to stretch, there is nearly always something in your stomach and you will have far less "grumbling" on your diet.
    3. Get full quicker- because of the smaller stomach, a small meal can satisfy
    4. Makes resisting snacking easier- your next meal is never far away.
    5. You have more energy- you have even supplies of energy, ever get tired after a big xmas dinner, lots of calories should give you energy but leaves you knackered trying to digest it all.
    6. Teaches you portion and calorie control - ESSENTIAL for weight loss.


    I try and space mine evenly

    3.30
    6
    8.30

    If you must snack, try apples or other fruit. But eating 6 meals means the temptation to snack goes away.

    unprocessed nuts are good for you... full stop! their fat content is good fats which everybody needs and are indeed a healthy snack. i regularly buy mixed nuts and snack at them when im peckish

    They are good for you. They just aren't particularly good for losing weight. Too many people attribute the word "healthy" to anything which helps you lose weight, and nothing else. If we were all in a famine, that reasoning would rapidly u-turn!!!
    Georgie, it's a good lesson, not to eat something on an assumption. Every food has a different purpose and you need to eat the foods that suit your purpose - weight loss!!! You need to be more careful about what you eat; you need to know what it's doing for your body!

    yes but they are highly calorific, which is something Georgie was hoping to avoid!

    Yes, and also quite ridiculous as Georgie has been known to walk around Galway with 2-3 200g bags of monkey nuts which he will snack on as he eats his dinner in a restaurant. He could easily pick off 300-400g's in a sitting. Strange chap.

    Yes they will help, especially for people who say they cannot eat enough or find it hard to get calories. But watch out for the fat content it is usually 50% so it is easy to go over your recommended amounts.

    Unprocessed nuts are best.

    eh I am being a picky b@stard this morning so, I would say that nuts are great for everybody be they putting on or losing weight, the key however with everything is knowing where, when and how much to put in your diet

    What would these meals consist of? I hear people say you should have 5 or 6 small meals a day but what makes up a meal? A piece of fruit? A yoghurt? Steak?

    Yes those could be meals but you might want to get a certain % of protein/carbs/fat etc in each one. I was eating 1800kcal per day at one stage, that is 6x300kcal. So that was porridge in the morning, 3 fruits- apple, orange & pear is about 300kcal, tin of beans, soup . All depends on portion size and you must weigh stuff and calculate it. Many ready meals are only 300kcal (though many will advise against them in favour of cooking your own). I cook up batches of stuff and store it in jars in the correct portions. Calculating calories makes you aware of food, you could have 3 biscuits and call it a "meal", or have 3 chicken fillets which have the same calories.

    Cool. Cheers for that. In the process of losing weight and eventually want to maybe build muscle but first start eating properly.

    No need to wait. If you start to build muscle now it will greatly speed up your weight loss, by boosting your metabolism and using calories to build the muscle. If you are already overweight you can add muscle while on a calorie deficit. Also if you are going on a calorie deficit it is worth lifting weights to prevent muscle loss along with the fat loss.

    I put most of my fat loss down to lifting heavy weights.
