Foreign Ciders

I started drinking Kopparberg occasionally a few monts back and foud the pear in particluar to go down very well; light texture and not too overpowering; sweet taste but not too much so. Mixed fruits/berry was a bit much for my pallete (SP
    ?)

Anywho, was in the local offie/newsagent this evening and got talking to a guy working there who I went to school with. He recommended all number of beers including some Lithuanian one which they had on offer (similar to Okicim apparently). In the end I decided on a cider for a change. Was going to leave it off 'til the weekend, but as I'd wasted about 20 mins of his time and his boss was around I decided I'd have to buy something.

So: It's called Rekorderlig and is also Swedish and coes in approx 50 flavours up there, but only 3 available to me so I decided on the "Jordgubb-Lime", with sketch of Strawberries and Lime. Goes down very well; very fruity and smells of strawberry cheesecake desserts.

Just though I'd see if anyone else had tried it??? I'd recommend anyhow

Kopparberg isn't really cider, it's an alcopop, the other stuff probably is as well.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Technically its not a true cider, Its only called an alcopop because its classed as one by customs and excise due to its high alco content. In reality there Perry style beers or ciders with sparkling fruit juice added. In fact the mixed fruit kopparberg is a cider with fruit flavors added, the same is true for Rekorderlig.

Its tasty enough and the flavors are something different with one being Starfruit and raspberries I think.

You can get the 3 flavors in McHughs.

any of that flavoured cider is just cr...p. Real cider comes from the West Country in England or from Wales......e.g. Weston's, Thatchers, who do single apple ciders with the names of the apples, eg Katy. In UK, the supermarkets all have excellent own brand ciders - worth a ferry trip....

you can get rekorderlig in shevlins offy in rathfarnham

passionfruit, apple, pear, mixed berry and melon

also have a good few flavours of the druids ciders which are ok and cheaper afaik

Pretty much avoid Druids. I keep forgetting it's cheap muck, but it really really is. Some new flavours came in to work so I decided I'd be the guinea pig. Pomegranate and Raspberry just tasted like most of the other raspberry drinks out there, nothing magical and I was dying for a hint of pomegranate. Next flavour was Starfruit, now, I've never eaten a starfruit so I was all excited, but it pretty much tasted like nothing so I really doubt it's a goer.
I had championed the stupid drinks and claimed them some precious fridge space, but the minute I get into work today I'm gonna rip those bad boys out and re-stock the rekorderlings!

Thanks for the heads up! Precious fridge space is right, i'll be advising not to stock these new flavours!

Not foreign (unless Tipperary is foreign) but I tried a few bottles of
Pippens cider at the weekend. I liked it a lot. Clear and lowish in alcohol at 4.3
€2.79 a pop from SuperValu. Brought to you from the makers of
    Devils Spit :)

I remember thinking "Savannah" (sp?) cider was quite good. It was rather dry with an interesting hint of something to it. I just remembered it today cause I saw it in Redmonds. It's definitly one to try and enjoy.

savannah is one of the nicest apple ciders i've tasted. very mellow with a hint of caramel. not too fizzy
from south africa i think. yes please....:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,325 ✭✭✭Frankiestylee

Ah yes, I was trying to remember where it's from. Quality alright.

was it savannah or savanna? never heard of the one with the "h" before? the savanna one looks like this....

    savanna_dry_kopie.jpg

    Very tasty cider indeed!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,325 ✭✭✭Frankiestylee

Yeah that's the one. I doubt there's two SA ciders out their called Savanna and Savannah.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 256 ✭✭happy_acid_face

turns out there is a savannah cider from south africa.. its pretty cheap, theres a bottle going on ebay for €380... :p The savanna one is from the UK (i think, but it could be that its just bottled there). It really is a good cider but still not as good as my old favourite, as i've mentioned here bfore and am drinking right now, Kingstone Press!

I've seen a good few of these ciders, the main ones are Rekoderlig,Kopparbergs,Hannas available in Superquinn are all Swedish,Sam Adams also do a cider,Savannah is from South Africa and is available in a good few independents and Brothers is also available in a good few Spars and Centra's.Best Policy if you can't get it in your local offie is to ask,a lot of the guys behind the counter will order it in,if the demand and margin is there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,325 ✭✭✭Frankiestylee

Oh sweet jebus now I'm confuzzled with all the savanna(h)s out there. But yeah HAF,twas the one you pictured I was on about. What's Kingstone press like? I like nice ciders but I've a much lower tolerance for ****e cider then I do for crappy beer. Knowing the current trend in our place for ciders (****e stuff or gimmicky stuff) I doubt I'd be able to order the Kingstone in, but I must give it an aul try. What company distributes it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 256 ✭✭happy_acid_face

yeah, i was wrong, just imported by a UK company. Tis' a south african alright. Kingstone is supplied by Comans i think. a really tasty cider that i cant see anyone complain about! i don't drink cider myself but it is one of the few i do enjoy. Definately worth a shot! I bet you'd get a solid amount of supporters if you introduced it to your cider drinkers, especially with the weather the way it is! Much better value cider too...

Comans, the new bane of my life. Friday morning sees about 12 pallets of drink off those chappies. I miss the days of various smaller companies, it seemed like less of a mountain to climb.
Must have a look then, might have a chat with the rep and see if he'll throw in a few tester cans :P

What type of cider is it? Dry? Sweet?

Does anyone from cork here know if the Abbots Ale house is the only place in Cork that sells rekorderlig?
I hate driving up to the north side every time I want some!

Savanna and Hunters Gold original and Dry from South Africa... mothers milk. The one pictured there is defo the one from South Africa - I think they make it from apples and pears which gives it a slightly different taste.

    I don't like Bulmers much :D

I'm a sucker for ciders from back home.

All these choices of ciders had me watering at the mouth but when I went to the off-licence the strangest cider they had kopparberg, oh woe is me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 493 ✭✭King.Penguin

I think the most attractive aspect of these "foreign" ciders are that they're sweet. I'm not aware of any non-dry Irish or British Cider. So Kopparberg, Goldencap, Reckorderlig, they're all good to me. Ritz, being a dry perry, tastes like piss, as does all dry ciders imo.

have to say I had a a mouthful of strawberry and lime reckorderlig and thought it tasted like vomit so emptied it down the sink. the melon one was fantastic though.

I've tried the Pear Rekorderlig flavour, it's really nice, I love Kopparberg but I prefer the Rekorderlig. You can get it in the Pavillion Bar in Trinity College. I liked it because it wasn't as sweet as Kopparberg but still had a fruity taste to it. It went down easy, I can drink upwards of 6 Kopparbergs without feeling a little queasy from the sweetness but I'm sure I could drink a lot more of the Rekorderlig and sure that's only a good thing right! :D

I haven't seen it in any off-licences though. Is the only one that one in Rathfarnam yeah?

Does anyone know where I can buy Rekordelig in an off-licence in Dublin 6/8 area? Tried 6 today including Molloys (who used to stock it) but they only had Kopparberg.
