No Need To Drink So Much Water

    In an interview on Newstalk 106 this afternoon one of the presenters/researchers from the BBC mentioned that it was absolutely unnecessary, for most people, to drink as much as 2 litres of water in a day on top of the water we get from food. The body does not use the extra water to improve complexion, and simply expels any excess water as clear urine.

    I had thought, as many do, that drinking this much water was very good for skin and for flushing 'crap' (sorry for the technical jargon) out of the body. Indeed, a relative of mine was told to up his water intake to 4 litres a day in order to hydrate his body to make up for not drinking the recommended 2 litres a day in the past. :confused:

    I agree with you. I don't normally post in this forum but thought people here might be interested in watching the program in order to get a handle on the researchers' reasoning. Y'know, to decide if it make sense to them.
    If it's expelling excess water it's a good thing, this means you are properly hydrated. Try preforming in sports without being properly hydrated you won't be able to.
    I reckon they were saying that if you often find yourself peeing out clear urine then you're drinking more water than is of benefit to you - even if, for instance, you only drink 1 litre of water a day.

    BTW - I'm not 100% certain that the 'water' issue will be discussed on tonights show. I only know that it was mentioned on the Newstalk 106 interview.

    I usually go by urine too - if it's clear, in general you're all good. I would say that most people live in a constant state of mild dehydration and should drink more water & that his comments were probably just directed at people who have decided that drinking as much water as their systems can possibly handle will make them live forever. Those people are out there and probably do need to be told to cut it back a bit, although they're too busy practising up-side down yoga poses or seeking out some exotic ethnic foods no-one else has heard of to listen to Newstalk 106.

    2Litres can be a lot for "most" people, if you are exercising you are sweating so need more, if you are drinking lots of caffeine or alcohol it is diuretic so you are urinating more so need more water. If your intake of salt is high "excess" water will help too.
