Mixing Protein and/or creatine with orange juice - Does it degrade?

    Hi,
I normally make a smoothie in the morning with orange juice, yoghurt, fruit and whey. Does the orange juice have any negative effect on the protein. Or is it fine to mix it with OJ.

Also does the shake need to be drank immediately or will the protein last 30 - 60 mins?

Likewise, can Creatine be added to OJ. I read a post saying to mix Creatine with Grape juice or the like as the sugar willl help it be absorbed more easily.
    Any comments?

    T.

It should be drank ASAP I think after 20mins it starts to degrade. I tried it with orange juice and didnt like it, love it with pineapple though. The insulin spike from the sugar is meant to aid creatine absorption I think most say grape juice since it is very high in sugar up to 16%, OJ is about 10-11%, it should be fine to mix with the creatine.

If you want to bring a shake somewhere it is better to bring the liquid and powder separate, maybe the juice in a shaker and powder in a bag. Then make up fresh.

Monkeyman, don't mix the creatine with OJ the acid will destroy it, stick with grape apple juice or add dextrose and water.

The best way to get creatine into you is with creatine pills. No argument about it.

Grape juice can be more acidic than OJ, usually about the same. And both are very mildly acidic compared to what is in your stomach! so if OJ destroys it, it won't stand a chance with the hydrocholric acid in your stomach.

Creatine should not be made in advance, maybe that is where that notion came from. It degrades when mixed with water in advance and I would expect it degrades even faster if mixed with OJ or grape juice in advance.

    Mix and neck it.

Grape juice used to be hard to get, tesco now stock it cheaply though.

I think it is th citric acid in the OJ that is the problem but as grape juice would be a lot lower in citric acid you don't come across the same problem.

That and as supplements are Trollybus's livelihood I would generally go with his advise

    Rumors...

At last, allow me to kill some false rumors about creatine that have been haunting the 'net.

Creatine is not destroyed in warm water. It should be solved in warm water! Creatine degrades at 303 degrees Celsius. Orange juice or other sources of citric acids will not degrade creatine into creatinine. If this were the case, creatine would never survive in our stomach which is much more acidic than citric acid. However, these juices will only deliver a medium insulin spike, for the best effect go for dextrose

The juice of choice was grape because it contained the most fructose, the sugar present in all fruit juices.
That link goes on to say reasons not to mix with sugars, but does say what I thought, that it was taken since grape is high in sugar.

There is also citric acid in grape juice, so if you are really that worried stick with water or dextrose. And you will find many sites saying not to mix with OJ, and many sites saying it is a myth. I have never seen it said that calling the OJ thing a myth is incorrect...

Ha ha ha. This argument is as old as creatine supplements. I would agree with Daveirl and say straight after workout seems to give most people, optimal results. I have experimented and found a bit about an hour and a half before my weights workout gave good results as did some first thing in the morning. These gave me good returns.

For me OJ has served me fine, I just whack it in the glass, stir and neck it. I've had good results taking some before and then some after training.
