That would be great news indeed because the other one has to be one of the worst run businesses in Dundalk. The place is grubby, toilets v dirty and broken, the shop is a complete rip off, you can never get them on the phone. Need I say more.

Also they don't get in all the new films that are released , the departed wasnt even there for one night!!! there are also lots of other examples of quality films not coming to it. Some people have said that IMC are in dispute with distributors

i find it a grand cinema, compared to drogheda, its amazing

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 583 ✭✭✭Dundalk Daily

Yes I was going to say the same thing that alot of top films are not shown. The departed was one of the biggest films of the year and it wasnt shown also if Im not mistaking the current Mel Gibson which is huge will also not been shown. A joke.

For anyone who thinks the place is fine have a closer look next time you are in.

Not to mention the severely dodgy car park beside the cinema. I could mention numerous things that I've seen myself and heard from other people who have parked in that car park. There really needs to be a bit more security around that area, be it CCTV or better lighting.

Jinxed myself, read this post earlier on today before i went to cinema - what HAPPENS??

Leave car at carpark, grand!! out of cinema into car, sweet - driving along down road notice the f-n wipers (front and back) been taking off... Lucky enough it wasnt raining cos god knows how the visibilty minus my "lovely" wipers had of been!! could have been rather dangerous...

Thinking of camping out tomoro night just to de-capitate all these little s-h-i-t-s - oh and the ariel gone too...grrrrrrrr

ps anyone who finds my "lovely" wipers in the vicinity of the Dundalk Cinema Regaion dont hesitate to give me a shout...:)

Weather good for tomoro??? hopefully so...lol

    :(

Alas, the pornster beat me to it. If you do have to go to this cinema DO NOT, repeat NOT leave your car in the car park. It's well known as a no go for cars - well, at least amongst the locals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,119 ✭✭✭✭event

again, have never had anything done to my car there

For those of you who were wondering about why _The Departed_ never made it to Dundalk, I can probably clarify what happened.

I was speaking to one of the staff members about it, and the problem was due to a dispute between the IMC chain and the distributors of the film. (I don't know what the dispute was over).

I had to go and see _The Departed_ in The Quays shopping centre in Newry which, I have to say, has a simply lovely cinema. The foyer is beautifully laid out and the screens themselves are great.

It would be nice if the IMC was a bit more adventurous in the films it shows. God knows, there are enough screens to justify showing some art house stuff maybe once a week.

i hate the dundalk cinema, at least 3/4 of people who go to the films are teenagers whoveither throw stuff at people, or talk consistantly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,399 ✭✭✭kluivert

Cinema in Newry is very nice.

    Dundalk is next.

But I was up in Belfast Odessey cinema a couple of weeks ago and wow!!! what i cinema they have there.

Me: Can I have two tickets to see "the pursant of happyness" please.
Cineman: Would you like standard tickets or VIP tickets, Sir?
    Me: VIP Tickets?
Cineman: Yes Sir, with VIP tickets with get a smaller seating per screen, free pop corn re-fill, drinks re-fill or coffee re-fill, no children under 16.
Me: Ill give that ago, thank you very much!

So got free medimum drinks and a popcorn.

Went into the screen and wow!! It was small but wow!! There was about 40 seats in total two rows of 20. Each seat was a huge leather lounger 2x2 by 10 rows each side. So much room you could actually recline them nearly all the way back and you didnt even come close to your neighbour behind you.

There was also a yong man at the door in case you needed a re fill he would and get it for you.

    Tickets - fecking expensive.

Was it good - It was great, on holidays, said feck it, why not.

I sometimes think that the posters here live in a different town to me or just want to knock everything. The cimema in Dundalk is on a par with many, and much better than most around the country. I spend a couple of nights a week in other towns and the Dundalk cimema would be the envy of most of them. One or two films haven't made it there but that is the case with all cinemas in the country. As regards the car park: I use it two nights a week and have never had any trouble. In deed it's a very convenient location - unlike what is available elsewhere in the country.

The rumour about the new cinema is just that - a rumour!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 583 ✭✭✭Dundalk Daily

Srameen obviously you go into the Dundalk cinema with your eyes closed. Have a look next time at the reception area, dirty, grotty, there isnt even proper doors. The stairs and the carpet are usually filthy, look closely. The male toilets are dreadfully dirty, whoever done the tiling should be sued. Tiles are falling of walls for several years and have never been repaired as well as broken tiles on the road. Also give them a buzz and experience the customer service.

You really have to be joking about the car park, go in some morning and have a look at the glass from cars that have been broken into. Its a complete joke.

How can you compare it to something like Newry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 811 ✭✭✭mal1

If people don't like the car park beside the cinema then why don't they park on the main street??

I do agree that the cinema could do with a bit of clean to say the least...I avoid the cinema in Dundalk as much as possible. Noisy teenagers can be a problem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,119 ✭✭✭✭event

where can you park on the main street?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,568 ✭✭✭thewools

after my tragic experience (see my post ABOVE) i now try to park directly accross from the cimema outside Superquinn - its well lit up and alot safer than the carpark!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 132 ✭✭Shane190

Yeah, that carpark beside the cinema in dundalk is dodgey enough, especially at night..

The thing that pisses me off the most about Dundalk IMC is the actual screening of films.

I used to go there every Friday for about 3 years and the amount of times the film botches up. Whether theres no sound for the start of the film, the picture is out of focus, once the picture even went off the screen at the top and started coming up the bottom!

I wouldn't mind paying €7 or whatever for a good experience, but paying that for a terrible service is a disgrace.

A mate of mine went out for a refund because the sound was mucked up once and they refused to give it to him.

    Gangsters.

You'll spend close to €15 on a ticket, popcorn and a drink and its just a terrible experience.

Thinking about going to the IMC tonight with the gf and I'm definately going to try to avoid using the cinema car park. Is Clanbrassil St safe enough for parking on a Friday night? Any other suggestions would be a great help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

I usually park outside the apartments on the left around the corner (as you head towards the Newry Rd. bridge) from the cinema - probably shouldn't, I'm sure it's private parking - or, failing that, Clanbrassil Street. I'd say Clanbrassil Street is fairly safe - especially compared with THAT car park (I presume you mean the one opposite the junction where R.K. O'Neills was)...

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

Cheers Bard, I actually parked down beside the old cinema, just across from Domino's. Very handy and safe enough too. A five minute walk from the IMC but good exercise and I had no worries going into the cinema.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

Good point actually - outside Dominos/Xtravision would be a much better choice than the places I usually park.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 ploop ploop

sure it is better than most cinemas around the country :)

but when it comes to seeing a film I prefer to see it in the cinema and not wait till its released on DVD as the IMC seems to have a dispute with the distributor(which I hear it is over the percentage of profit the distributor want) not only that but they advertise films through trailers and posters that they don't even get in Planet Terror and Shrooms to name but a recent few and that is my main issue. i can understant that it is business and that they have to do whats profits them but it breaks my little movie heart to see a movie poster with a release date that i can see it but find out won't see it that day and have to make arrangements to go elsewhere (usually movies@Dundrum which I love especially the VIP area and even in the non-VIP area the seats are very comfortable with great leg room would highly recommend Dundrum for seeing a film and the also get in 3D movies).

    IMC Dundalk
Staff :D 4.5/5 nice and friendly people
Management  2/5 grumpy and won't listen to customer
Films  3.5/5 get in films that will just about keep people entertained
Shop :) 4/5 Good staff and quite a good selection took away the butter which i loved but it unhealthy and also not offered in many cinemas anyway and popcorn can be hit or miss.
Gents Toilets :o 3/5 you can pee there

Park in the Superquinn Car Park and walk over (presuming it is open at the time of your film)

It's free for under 3 hours as far as I know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,516 ✭✭✭Fatfrog

Could Dundalk support another cinema? I doubt it, I reckon the IMC would suffer as its the older one opened late 99' (9years old now) it would be a real shame to loose a centrally located cinema. That whole end of town was an absolute nightmare, the planners and developers should be strung up, its incredible how much land is used for car parking between back of boyds, Long walk and caroll village yet there’s still shortages and security issues. The x4 parking sites should have been pooled into a multi story car park to serve not only the shopping centers but the town centre especially now in this down turn. We will never get another chance at developing a large site like this one so close to the town centre!!

It looks as if a private company "Finnabair ltd." (Not sure on the name) is looking into building a cinema but don't necessarily have to run it, the building could be leased out, in theory IMC could move out of the caroll village site (depending on their lease agreement) to the retail park.

    Defo agree with daily, the current IMC has some major flaws;
1:Toilets, Gents absolute joke! constantly pee on the floor from dodgy pipe work, gaps in tiles or missing tiles allow pee to seep into the walls, I can imagine people especially staff walking pee into areas such as the shop euuuhhh... don't they have to pass a heath inspection?? The landlord or IMC should sort it out ASAP!!

2: Phones, the shop staff answer all calls, if the shop is busy then the phones don't get answered! They sometimes have a recorded info service but I hear from Staff that it always crashes. IMC has a couple of cinemas around the country, in the Dun-Laoghaire they have 24hr booking, could they not just have x1 centrally located centre where the actual cinema staff running the shop don't answer the phones. FYI I have seen the no. quoted wrong in loads of places RTE teletext etc. I believe its 9320400?

3: Staff are generally nice, management are basically babysitters and don't make any decisions on films, times, prices, screens etc. all done from a head office.

4: Films, I believe it’s due to box office % takings, for every ticket sold something like 50% of the ticket price goes to the film distributers, Warner Bros films look for an increased figure too high for the IMC group it seems. They say the ticket sales covers building rent, light, heat etc. And that the shop covers wages and profit.

5: The building itself is an absolute disaster, a typical cinema layout will have screens side by side and opposite each other in a square linear pattern entrance one side exit other side, the IMC has just been squeezed into one rectangle with wedge shaped sections, what this does is waste an incredible amount of floor space, compare the large confusing lobby at Dundalk IMC to any other and you know what I mean. Screens 1 &2 are fine, but others are squashed on top of each other, some projectors couldn't be fitted in squarely resulting in a picture like a parallelogram rather than a perfect rectangle. The standard cinema generally has x1 projection booth with all projectors in x1 room, I hear the IMC is all over the shop with 4-5 separate rooms connected by a maze of corridors’.

Some screens have a very small floor angle it can be difficult to see over the seats in front especially for children

The emergency exits!! God help us all if there’s ever a serious emergency were dead, same thing all over the place!, narrow steep stair cases I doubt the staff would even know where there going

A new cinema building would be good to see, but I think it would be managed much like the current & with increased prices.

A new cinema showing independent/foreign films would be a good idea, something like the Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin.

The Cinema in Dundalk isn't bad, I've been in worse, It's not as modern as some but the basics are right.

    We can but dream...

As a Canuck living in Dundalk for 15 years, I never thought I'd see the day when there was an ice rink and regular (ice) hockey. :D

The Film Club at the Town Hall is good in the meantime though, for indie and foreign and arthouse films. And of course having a decent system at home helps when watching DVD's.

But 'tis true, a cinema as proposed above would be great. I don't mind going to Dublin to the Lighthouse (going this Sat. to see the Lemon Tree at 2.15) or the IFI but I'd much rather just walk to a local cinema. :)

I'm very surprised to hear that. I know the manager - Niall. i worked with him before. He's an absolute gentleman, a very nice chap. He was well liked where we worked, I never saw him grumpy ever. He must've been having a really really bad day.

:) had a quick look at the planning pages.. somewhere beside JJB it seems, 10 cinemas with cafe and parking.. finnabair applied for the permission but i wonder who will be running it.. uci?? or another imc? Finnabair did the retail park and they all leased to other retailers... i presume it'll be the same for this?

I've heard that there is a bowling ally going in also as part of Phase 2 of the development along with the cinema. It's about time we started getting facilities into the town. There was nothing in the town up until 5 years ago now we have facilities that are the envy of most towns. JJB soccerdome, Icedome, race track just to name a few.

Planning permission has been granted for a new ten-screen multi million euro cinema in Dundalk.

The new movie house, which could house 1,800 movie goers, will be located right beside the Dundalk Ice Dome, just off the Inner Relief Road. Along with
    ADVERTISEMENT
this, a new ‘VIP’ cafe will be built inside the complex.

Currently there is no operator in place to put their name on the project but a deal should be finalised within the next two weeks with rumours circulating that it could go to the popular iMax franchise which is known for its moving seats during action films.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,839 ✭✭✭doncarlos

Imax would be great as we would have the only one on the island. Used to be one in the Odessy in Belfast but it closed last year. It's good to see more investment going into the town

If you readlast weeks Argus or Democrat you would know that the developers got the go ahead for a new 10 screen cinea in Dundalk besides JJB. Not a rumor, its fact.

Also there is speculation that up to 5 of the 10 screens will be dedicated to the 'Adult Film Industry' which considering the estates near by, will be a great distraction and is guranteed to make money

In relation to the estates I think this would just mean more annoying teenagers than what you usually have to suffer in the IMC. It still not known if the IMC will close but I hope it doesn't, because the one besides JJB would just be to far of a spin out.

Se being on the dole or claiming other benefits wont cover the cost of a new laptop or computer, it will however cover the cost of a cinema ticket....See how that works??

And yes, the internet has lots of porn:cool:

So everyone in the surrounding estates is on the dole or claiming benefits?? You are some muppet if you believe that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 80 ✭✭Cpt Tremendous

It means that it will give them something to do, there are only so many laps of the estate or the town you can do with a toddler and while pushing a pram, especially when your 19.

So the cinema will definately break up there day

You could always go to the surrounding estates and see for yourself. I used to be a collector for a local furniture comapny and believe me its benefits city. granted its not a fair assumption that everyone is on the dole in those areas. But the majority are, and apologies to anyone from the area who is a honest hard working tax payer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,839 ✭✭✭doncarlos

Well lets leave aside estates like Bay Estate, Avendale, Seafield Lawns, Blakeley close, Kingswood which are all private estates i'm assuming you are talking specificly about Muirhevana Mór. Yes of course there are people on benefits in MMór but to suggest that 51% (Majority) are is propostorous. I know quite a lot of people from this that estate and all are "honest hard working tax payers"

    Apologies for going off topic.

I honestly think you should retract those slurs against the estates in the area. Totally stereo-typing. I haven't before come across such insulting comments on the Louth boards before.
Would you agree that all collectors for companies are glorified thugs who extort money from unfortunates no matter what? Of course not and certainly that statement is untrue. However, that's the type of attitude you have towards people in the surrounding estates.
    Shame on you.
