I saw this mentioned in another thread but decided to start a new one so as not to drag it off topic.

I'm looking to join a gym in the coming weeks and this one is about 5 minutes walk from my house (which makes it far more easy for me to get off my arse and got there).
I'm hoping to pop up there tomorrow and see what it's like, but thought I'd ask around here for some "insider" opinion on it beforehand, just to see what paying members think of it.

From what I gather, annual membership is a good price so it would be hard to not get your moneys-worth, and given that it's new the facilities should be in decent condition...

What I'm looking for is somewhere to get into shape (as in get fit, and turn my creeping gut into something a bit more honourable)... I'm a keen swimmer who hasn't swam on a regular basis in a long while, so if it had a decent pool that'd be great; it'd be something for me to do when I wasn't in the mood for weights etc.
Ideally for me I'd get my membership, get someone to tell me what I need to do (and how often) to get the results I want and then leave it up to me to get it done... would I be right in assuming that that's not a big ask for a half-decent gym?

    Thanks for any opinions

I use Northwood, joined in October. I'm not training for anything in particular, just a good cardiovascular workout, and the enjoyment I get from it.

The main thrust of my workouts is swimming, and find the pool fine, particularly as it's normally quiet. Often you have a lane to yourself, except at peak times, which lets you concentrate on pushing yourself, rather than avoiding others who are swimming at different speeds. It's clean, 25M long, 4ft deep all the way along. There are steam rooms, saunas, lounger spas and jacuzzis, all of which are a nice bonus when you finish your workout.

As for the gym itself, I find it fits all my needs. I'm fed up of running at the minute, so I mainly use some of the other machines, and do some machine weights. Perhaps someone who's really into their training could give their impressions of the gym, machines, free weights etc.

If your not a regular gym goer you can't really disappointed as it probably has everything you need, except for proper exercise bikes which is a pisser. The free weights area is fine, not the best but far from being the worst. At the mo it is €345 for the year but the good intensions crowd is up for it can very busy but there are always spare cardio machines available

Thanks for that - dropped in and got some info from them, but didn't get a chance to get a guided tour as I was in a rush!

Price is good at the moment, only until the end of the month though - not sure if I'll have the cash by then, but I might get someone to pay it and I'll pay them back in February, especially if there's a significant price rise after Jan 31st!
