    It's brilliant...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 370 ✭✭CherieAmour

I actually didn't think it was meant to be a comedy. Sure, there were funny parts, but I thought it was very dark in places. I think the audience were a bit confused by what they were supposed to be laughing at and what they weren't.

The people I went with, and myself included couldn't believe the parts some people were cracking up at. We wondered if we were missing something, but I think they were :p

Ahh I was delighted when I went along to see this movie. I wasn't too keen but I really enjoyed it. Most definetly a future addition to the DVD collection.

Backtoblack please try and refrain from making one line posts that are constructive in no way. If you don't like it, please say why in at least a vaguely coherent manner.

You're also wrong. It was one of the best of 2006 - funny, sweet, poignant and brilliantly acted. Certainly not a movie for muppets unless you think that everyone I know that's seen the movie is a muppet as well as countless film critics and award bodies...

"Rubbish" is a bit strong. I managed to sit through it and quite enjoyed it - but the only people in the cinema who laughed out loud with any frequency, and applauded at the end, were gay! (Well I was in LA when I saw it) None in my company thought it was great, the general consensus was "good".

It's good enough, but well over hyped. I always think it funny how precious and offended some people (you know who you are ;) ) become when someone disagrees with their opinion.

    IMHO

Good for you if you enjoyed it. It would very boring world if we all had the same tastes and never disagreed with one another... or perhaps you would prefer that.

Watched this last night and I was not impressed either. Did'nt think much of the plot, acting or the characters. This has been touted as film of the year by a few but I just don't get it.

Yes Blacktoblack, different tastes are what makes the world interesting but maybe posting a bold statement as a thread which sounds itself as if it denounces all other opinion invites threatening replies from some :D

Gym junkie / computer geek? One in the same????? :D:D:D

OP - I'm not saying that your taste or opinion is wrong.

Maybe your sense of humour is just broken.

Also to the person who thought that it was quite dark in places and was surprised at what people laughed at. I laughed at some of the darkest parts of the movie - that's why I loved it. Black comedy don'tcha know?

Watched it for the second time yesterday. After having got past the laughing fits that plagued my first watch, it comes across as a witty and touching road movie. Works as a comedy and a drama me thinks.
    Film of last year, probably.

You see, I'm amazed by that now. I would never be amused by this film.
But saying that, some of the people that love this movie would hate movies that I love.
Absolutely each to their own and I won't ask you all to refrain from liking the movie or saying that you like it, just as I will continue to say what I think about something. I hate censorship! :D

My favourite film of last year by far..

.. and pre-ordered from CDWOW (with a £5 voucher) to be released on January 22nd!

Backtoblack.... get some sense!! There's probably some nice Lindsay Lohan films for you to go out and enjoy! :D

    Amelie is another one..
    or a Very Long Engagement.

    Lots of independant films etc!

Meh, some films just rub people the wrong way... Napoleon Dynamite for example. I've known people who absolutely loved it, and some who've despised it completely.

    That would be me.

You laughed at the shots before the show of all the kids getting fake tan and make up put on them? That wasn't supposed to be funny, it's a critique of the awful beauty pageants young girls are subjected to when they're supposed to be out enjoying themselves.

There are other parts that weren't funny that I can't mention for spoiler purposes but I don't think you are supposed to laugh at the whole thing.

I don't think I'm the only one that feels this way. I've seen others on here call it 'drama' as well as comedy and while the entire packed cinema were in convulsions at funny parts, the majority fell silent for the parts I'm talking about. There were only about 4 people still laughing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 370 ✭✭CherieAmour

    I'm a big fan of

    Withnail & I,
    Mystic River
    American Psycho
    and
    Amelie.

    So there ya go! :D

    HATED

    Napolean Dynamite!

Critque, yes. But critique can also be funny aka satire. The ridiculousness of the pageant is what makes it funny. It's uncomfortable, and slightly disturbing, but I laughed. Not every serious topic has to be tackled in a serious, brows raised kind of manner - look at the success of political comedies and the like. In fact, often a bit of humour can make critique more appealing and universal.

I know what satire is and I know what black comedy is, to return to the point that what is good for some is awful to another, what is funny to you was not funny to me, or the majority of the people in the cinema on the night I went. That's all.:)

Ah yes. I remember several people voiced similar feelings about Napoleon Dynamite.

Sounds like one of those classic cult comedies people either love or hate with no in-between.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,598 ✭✭✭cashback

Haven't seen Little Miss Sunshine but have heard good things about it.
Sounds like one of those divisive films such as Lost In Translation (loved it/friend hated it) or Sideways.
I was in a shop the other day when a man and his kids came in. He sees Sideways on dvd and says to them "That's the worst film I've ever seen!"
I'm standing beside him and nearly have to stop myself shouting out loud at him. I thought it was excellent.
As for Napoleon Dynamite.... Meh. Was alright but not a classic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 370 ✭✭CherieAmour

I loved Lost in Translation :)

I think the thing about Napolean Dynamite that I couldn't take was the guy in the lead role. He actually gave me a headache to look at him (not him as a person, the character he was playing). The fact that he was completely expressionless did nothing for me. Maybe others liked this about him and that that's what made his sporadic dance routine so funny for them, but I just couldn't take it. Everyone else in it was alright and the story wasn't bad, it was just the main character I couldn't handle.

I liked SideWays and Lost In Translation..
I wouldn't rave about them as such though.. but I did enjoy them.

Ok have to go. Lots to do today. Spent hours online last night. This laptop will be the death of me yet.. I'll lose my gym junkie reputation and turn into a computer-geek - aaaagh! :)

Your probably aged between 14 to 17 and have are dealing with some serious hormonal issues at the moment, hence the reason to come on here and make such a stupid post, you pick one of the most successful films of the year and call it rubbish for no reason although it is merely just to get areaction out of people. You try to give the impression that you know this film is bad by giving short answers and implying you have better pallet for films, yet you dont give one construtive reason why its a bad film.
You feel the need to tell everyone that you have lots to do today, your not getting the attention you feel you deserve in the real world so you come here to get it....you were online last night - well done, was it your first time or something.
You also feel the need to tell people you are a gym junkie and not a computer geek (like people on here i presume you mean), the reality is that you probably enjoy being on the internet more than going to the gym but feel that you must keep up some kind of image and lie to yoursef(come out of the closet).
If you dislike the film, give some valid reasons instead of going against the grain just to try and look cool and different.
Your too cool to admit you like Lindsay Lohan films, its not wrong to like them, each to their own as you say.

My god. Are people on this board so insecure that if someone goes against their own insignificant opinion of a film that they feel the need to practically assault the other person?? If my disliking "little miss sunshine" gets you so hot under the collar, I would strongly suggest you live a little.
I'm beginning to find this forum/board a waste of time with having to put up with narrow minded people like you, making points for the sake of proving themselves.
Seriously, good lord. There is more to life my friend.

    Cheers.

Ok, we get it, our lives are insignificant compared to your interesting active life
One day you will realise you are not as smart as you think but just an angry teenager trying to find their place in the world.
You give the impression that you dont care and this forum/board is a waste of time yet it was probably the first thng you did when you got up today
You call us narrow minded yet you are the one calling a film rubbish just cos you don't understand black comedy yet, you have yet to explain why its so rubbish
Why log on to boards just to say Little Miss Sunsine is rubbish ? Just to get the attention you crave but cant get off anyone...
You tell me to live a little but that just stinks of someone that has not lived yet and experience all the things that they dream of and the things they hear and see other people do.
You probably found it hard to relate to the film because you did not understand it and are alien to some of the underlying themes in the film

Carcharodon, take some time to consider the consequences before you dash in and attack people on a tangent. This is a Film board, and as such we discuss films here, not make blithely make ranting statements about what kind of a person another poster is just because we don't agree with them.

Personal abuse is reserved solely for people who don't like David Lynch, Subtitled Films, and The Evil Dead. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I think there really needs to be some sort of a clamp down on 1 line opening posts stating that a film is terrible.

If I think a film is awful then I take great pleasure in listing the reasons why I think it is awful.

I went to see Little Miss Sunshine the first week it opened in the IFI and didn't know much about it at the time and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. But since then it's seems to have been greatly over-rated. It's a standard enough smaltzly American film with a touch of blackness which makes it stand out.

Alan Arkin is brilliant in it... that man really should be in more films.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,003 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Charter now updated. No more creating a thread with one or two lines to tell us how you hate/like a movie, without giving an actual reason to allow some constructive debating.

On topic: I liked Little Miss Sunshine. I didn't think it was brilliant or worthy of film of the year. It was enjoyable nonetheless with some very nice touches of black humour, particularly when the uncle tried to explain to the young girl why he attempted suicide.
