Since there's a fair few TCDers who seem to only frequent this place at night, how about somewhere to have all those stupid rambling late night conversations?

Plus the forum has been kind of quiet lately...

This is true. I can't sleep cos the clown will eat me. And I'm talking to three different TCD boardsies on MSN, plus there are two living in my flat. WTF? This is insane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,626 ✭✭✭Stargal

    You're popular tonight :)

I can't sleep because... well I don't know why. I've been working on a project-thing for college pretty much all night, but I'm running out of things to do on it. Bleurgh.

I'm not in TCD but can't sleep and saw the thread on the home page :-/

I haven't been posting or paying attention to mod things* much cos my final year thesis is meant to be printed thrice, bound and in by 5pm monday, this apparently being a "hard and fast deadline".

-Length thesis will (/should) be in the end? 30 pages.
-Pages Dec has done in the past 3 months? 15 pages.
-Pages written today (or yesterday it seems)? 5 pages

    *-Reported posts (thanks Talliesen)
-Also somebody sent me actually quite a nice pm asking could they advertise some stuff here.

Me too. I can certainly sleep. I was playing online Cluedo, monopoly, boggle and yahtzee for the last couple of hours (a quick game became an epic battle). I can assure you all I won most convincinly on the majority of occasions.

Hey, welcome to the TCD forum :)

I shouldn't have specified TCDers in the first post, I meant it to be for everyone. If I wasn't so tired and contrary I'd go back and change that. Meh.

    So. Not sleeping sucks.

You've got 3 days to do ten pages - might mean a couple of late nights that's definitely doable.

    Good luck with it btw.

That sounds like a challenge. I admire your bravery, but one woman's bravery is another's foolishness (or something like that).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

You know, I'm just talking to someone about this whole boards people thing. Kevin, John, Iain (Rredwell), Claire H and Jean: I met and got to know these people in real life (tm), not having a clue they were on boards, and then had that strange "Oh so YOU'RE <insert username here> on boards! How bizarre" experience. Which would be funny if it just happened once, but FIVE TIMES!? And I run into boardsies all the time in daily life, our circles of friends seem to overlap. It's crazy.

Also, the following conversation has occurred quite a few times:

"Hey, are you Pet from boards?"
    "Eh, yes, yes I am.."
    "I don't post, but I lurk..whoah, I know a lot about you, you know..."
    "*nervous laugh*"
    ..later..
"Wow, you're nothing like I expected you to be. I thought you'd be really quiet."
    "Me? Quiet? HAHAHAHA, that's funny."

    For a made-up saying that's vaguely threatening :D

Well it's been a while since I've yahtzeed, and I sucked at it even when I was a kid, but I'm killer at Cluedo... so maybe that was a challenge... but I can't even string coherent sentences together right now so it might be best if I just leave it at boasting about my prowess rather than actually doing anything to prove it.

Wow. I really need to sleep.

Well... I kinda included today/yesterday when I said the past 3 months. So 15 pages left :o I get to put some diagrams in though so... not too bad. It's the art of sounding-like-you-know-what-you're-talking-about and making it appear that having no results is exactly how you meant it to turn out that's the problem.

After re-reading what I'd done today I found this among it:

"... electron source gun mounted on a flange onto the UHV chamber. Protruding into the chamber is a connection tube with an aperture of approx ~250μm. A differential pumping unit is used to maintain a high ..."

I wonder what I was thinking at the time...

What's weirder is I've been in the same room as Stargal about 15 times (this isn't an sort of threat etc.). There are a couple of internet celebrites I'm bumped into that wouldn't realise who I am. I have to agree with Roro that there is an almighty overlap of people I see on a regular basis around campus (within house 6, at the pav, just around campus generally) and people I interact with online (boards, msn, tcdsu, irc). There was one day I think I bumped into Donal about 3 times at 3 different places.

It's a pity, don't see Agent Smith around anymore (I never thought I'd say that!). I know he's off doing different things in different places but I always thought he'd be around a bit more. Maybe he is and I'm just not seeing him.

Who are you? I'm intrigued. I know I slagged Pet a bit there, but I kinda wish I knew more boardsies in real life. It feels a bit weird to be talking to/at so many people every day and not having a clue who any of them are.

    Er, lol?

Still doable. Do you want us to give out to you if we see you posting on here a lot? We could shout at you to get back to work or something? If you think that would help.

Lol, threat. Yeah I worked in the same place as Stargal and Claire H over the summer, I'm in a band with John, I live with Jean and Cabria..Christ!

Stargal, I get out plenty! I just seem to meet internet people all the damn time. And I don't even study computer science!
I wonder what I was thinking at the time...

I think I can guess. Want me to explain it for everyone?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 8thor2nd?

Stargal, soon, soon you will know.

Apex - I thought you were a big fan of "The Thesis may be up to 30 pages long, but if you've said everything you've needed to say in 18 pages, that's fine".

It's always better to write a little too much rather than a little too little because an examiner can run through excess with a red pen, but if you've left something out, they can't imagine it to be there (or if they can, they can't give you credit for it).

Unless you desperately need to do work or study, may i suggest herbal tea. It works very well for sending one to sleep. That and walking the dog at around midnight. Or better yet tracheal bronchitis. It will have you asleep at 7pm.

And as for the boardsies that you see everyday and hang out with, its insane. Firstly Shay and I do BESS together, are in the Hist together, spend incredible amounts of time doing the same stuff and then we're both on boards.

Then theres Neil who I see at least once a week to be told of th evils of boards and our miss informed opinions at Exec.

The various GMB hacks who post from time to time. I see the Economics boys nearly all the time in the Arts block and still see Joe from time to time despite him not being in Trinity. I suppose its the whole common interest thing.

Oh and when I was at the UCD IV Elmyra from UCD boards came up and asked me was i a boardsie after one of the rounds.

Arrr, got most of that **** done in a 24 hour stint of mentalness last year. 15 pages over a weekend ain't that much, especially if you got all the intro and crap out of the way and just need to copy/paste results in.

  • Yeah, it was funny when people posted pics a while back, and I recognised most people from seeing them around. I've seen Pet loads of times (did you live in Trinity Hall '04-05? Not sure where I've seen you), I always see awayindahills around the GMB and most of the others around campus, and I've talked to a few of you. It's kind of creepy really when you know someone's name and what they've been up to and they have no idea who you are. :D

Well it's just a bit hard to respond to what you said without getting overly descriptive about Pet's bod-ay. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But it mightn't lend itself to internet conversation.

Wow. This post took about five minutes to write. It's very difficult to say this without sounding like some kind of perv. Think I'll just leave it there.

For the love of God someone change the subject.

Grand, haven't gotten into the swing of actual research yet. Had a lot of preliminary training, tests, etc. to do so now I can start getting into the real work. Should have a paper or two published before the end of the year too which is exciting :)

There's a word you don't hear much of anymore. Sap. That used to be the big insult when I was in 5th or 6th class. Usually accompanied by an overly dramatic rolling of the eyes. That and 'poxy'.

If someone makes a really bad innuendo we should call it an in-yore-enda, in honour of Ibid's terrible, terrible puns.
