Can anyone help me with Linux?

    Hi there Board Members!
As this is my first posting in Boards.ie, I'm not too sure if this is going to appear in your website when I press the button later! Here goes nevertheless.

During the Christmas Holidays my son partitoned the hard drive & downloaded Susi, the latest edition of Linux, I think. I'm told it's more secure than windows & I would like to get to know how to use it. So, if there's a Linux expert reading this I would really appreciate your help & advice.

I think, Gimp in Linux is more or less the same as Photo Shop 7 in Windows.
I would love to be able to arrange a number of digital photographs, most if not all in a semi circle fashion, within 10" x 8" say A4 size or A3 size paper. I'm wondering can this be created with Gimp and then saved as a template? I haven't got a clue where to begin here but I'm very eager to learn and I sincerely hope that there's someone out there who can guide me in the right direction!

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I have no idea about Linux but you might try the Unix board for your query. It has Linux related stuff there. Welcome btw.

I don't use gimp very much so I'm not sure about your particular problem. There are tutorials everywhere on it though, heres the page from the official site: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

If I were you I'd try posting in forums that are on totally linux based sites such as http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ Theres actually a Art & Imaging in Linux forum half way down the page which is probably your best bet. Good luck

Also, for future reference it SuSE not Susi. :)

You will get a better answer on the gimp forums/mailing list

    Hi Barney007 and welcome.
you could achieve what you want with the gimp,
but it would be awkward and your other requirement
for saving it as a template would be difficult.

Take a look instead at a program called 'scribus'.
SuSE's package manager should include it.

On an aside, would you be confident doing what you propose in Photoshop 7 ?
Just trying to guage your experience with different types of software.

    Best of luck,
I'll keep an eye on this thread.

I think it's fair to assume that Ruu moved this thread here from After Hours.
