Are you a snob?

Do you consider yourself a snob? In what sense? Would you admit (in your inner voice) looking down on those less fortunate? We all have a touch of the snob about us but seeing as there is some level of anonymity on Boards, to what extent exactly? Is there a “wrong side of the tracks” as far as you are concerned and how freely will you admit it? Or is everyone of an apparently “lesser” social status a lesser human being in your eyes, typified by the likes of Ross O Carroll Kelly and Hyacinth?

    http://kuacentral.com/pics/kua03_17.jpg :)

And yes, the class culture in Ireland IS alive and kicking.

I was so surpised at the uncouth title of your thread that my eyes widened in surprise and my monacle fell out and landed in my fresh glass of Pimms. I hope you're happy!!! :)

Really though, no, wouldnt consider myself snobby in any way. I'm from what other's may consider the wrong side of the tracks, so I've never felt snobby about anything really.

I dont have a glass of Pimms either. Which is good, because I'm not quite sure what it is.

well i tend to look down at certain pavees....lived near rakes af them when i was in college..i mean , the kids used to wear their (filty) school uniforms all week, incl.sat and sunday..their faces were always filty...like, a bar of soap costs what...? less than €1 anyway. There would be kids running around with smaller kids , often no more that 8 months old, in their toy buggies....hello like... and then at night , the parents themselves out all nite and then come back for a big shouting match in the middle of the street. i used to walk around a VERY long way just to avoid bumping into them cos they would just hurl abuse at you....from a very young age..

So yes, when it comes to that type, i guess i am a snob...and proud of it.

It depends on how other person approaches you

if some one approaches me like a snob i am a snob i get scared and show my snobby side in responce its my nature.

but if some one approaches me as down to earth i am extremely simple and ordinary person to him which infact we all are.

we come empty handed and we go empty handed so why be a snob

all we leave are memories .... good or bad thats up to us

Yep, even though I'm from Tallaght I know I can be very snobbish.

When I see people write: "I seen this on ...." I think, its "I saw!" you commoner!

To me, looking down on someone who is a scumbag isn't snobbery. It's because they're a scumbag, not because they're poor. They may not be poor anyway.

Yeah probably. I reckon most people are to a certain extent.

I suppose it depends on how you define a snob??

But isn't a snob someone who judges the background of another person or who feels they have to appear materially wealthy in the eyes of others? What you just said, 6th, demonstrates a lack of tolerance for poor grammar - something with which I can empathise! - not snobbery.

And that's what I mean by snobbery. Not the obvious ones like being pedantic or having an aversion to people who don't wash, I'm talking about judging background/looking at people in material terms or noting a person's table manners and having a quiet chuckle at how inappropriately they use their cutlery. I'm talking about the little things.

I think you can be snob with other stuff, such as music snobs and film snobs, however the OP does seem be talking about more traditional snobbery.

I personally only think of the word 'snob' in terms of wealth, address, school attended etc. A person who judges someone else's table manners is a dick, but not necessarily a snob. Well, unless the other person is a total pig at the table.

I'm a reverse snob: I look down on pretentious gits who spend all their time banging on about property and cars... and let me tell ya, there are many...

Gimme a pavee any day :-)

You can be sure there are plenty of pavees who are obsessed with property and cars.

I look down on gold card snobs who think they are better than the people who serve them at the cash register or other people in general.... I guess that's quite hypocritical but I don't care.

Ito people less well off, I guess I feel bad that they have been put in that situation, rather than patronising them. I hope.

It's nothing to do with money. it's something called manners. A lil civility, education and class will get you everywhere.

The richest person in the country could be a drug-dealing pimp. Surround yourself with all the material things and servants you can find, but breeding will out. You'll be nothing but a scumbag.

Just like the new money D4 kids with a private education can kick a guy to death outside Annabels. Scumbags. With daddy's money, scumbags non the less.

I laugh when I see Cribs and they have the rappers like Snoop on, in their gold plated houses with 20 massive cars outside and bottle of Kristal, home cinemas. Who are you trying to impress?? It's so tacky it's ridiculous. You can take a person out of the ghetto, but you can't.. etc.

90% of Ireland were peasants til the 50's. Even in the 80's hardly had a pot to piss in. Reinventing themselves. Sad really. I personnally think the standard of humanity and decency has plummeted the more money people accumulate. It's a horrible Me, me, me attitude imo.

I don't think there's anything wrong with looking down on (don't think it's even a case of 'looking down on', just disliking with justification) materialistic, flash ****. That's not reverse snobbery. A reverse snob is someone who looks down on a person who's middleclass and educated and didn't grow up in a poor area.

This country has class systems now? haha. Delusions of grandeur.

It's not slagging knackers cos they are poor, they can afford more foreign holidays and plasma screens than the rest of us, (some travellers are loaded ffs!) it's cos they are idiots who are hindering socity.

I slag lil miss puffy hair d4 wannabe not cos I'm better or richer than her family but cos she's acting like an idiot. And it's amusing.

So Johnny Skanger wins the lotto, he's now upper class and can look down on the rest of us??

Say the Queen and her family, somehow lost their money and were sent to a council estate would they then be "lower class"?

And for anyone who uses the term "working class" for dole scabbers... it's a bit nonsensical. Classes original classed those who worked. As the gentry didn't need to work because they could hire people and had old money (and contrary to popular belief "old money" was around well before dot.com:rolleyes:) I guess the people too lazy to work are the upper class of Ireland :D

Anyone who judges on money is the LEAST classiest person of all. It's the type of person you are that matters not whether you have a D & G watch and a flash car. Or the latest Nikes and diamond stud in your ear to represent your bling (rappers take note!)

EDIT: I scored 45 on that quiz. Because I roll my eyes and slag clothes. Yea, I slag D4 clothes, which are loike designer you know omg, and they cost loads and still offend my eyes. That quiz makes no sense!!

Ignorant about electronics. I have to agree as far as computers are concerned. I can not understand a young person of today not being able to use a PC.

i think its abosolutely unbelievable when someone thinks they're actually better than other people... I really do. Often I notice people walking around with a "look" of "I'm so superior.. I'm filthy rich and these people are peasants" type look. Its truely hilarious really.
I can be an intellectual snob.. and I refuse to go out with a guy that wears hoodies... and a few things like that.. but i don't think people wearing hoodies or people less fortunate than i am are worth less than I am. I think they are more unfortunate than i am.
Its absolutely disgraceful to see a "snobby person" walking around clearly with notions of superiority.
There are far more important things in the world than having the biggest bank balance... and there are far more gracious/thoughtful/kind things that a person can fill their minds with other than pathetic thoughts of how much better they are than their fellow human beings.

About the hoodie thing..... euwwwwwwwwwww! *turns up nose!* :D

WTF?? Do you even understand how class works? And of course Ireland has a class system, it may not be the most divisive, but unless this is a socialist classless society you can be pretty much be guaranteed that much.

And yes, one of the main ways of profiling class is money. Right or wrong, that's part of it.

Finally, if judging on money isn't classy, what does that make you? You've made a lot of links between people you don't like and the money they don't have, so what are you actually trying to say?
