I'm scowering the net for an affordable relacement at the moment. Don't really want to repair it, I'd rather replace the whole neck

By the looks of things, I'd say bad things happen to careless people. Unless the guitar just fell apart all by itself?

My girlfriend dropped it. All of my gear is well cared for. My pedals go into boxes when I'm not using them and the cover goes onto my amp

I hope you broke her neck in return, if my girlfriend did that she wouldn't be walking anytime soon ;)

Looks to be an easy repair thankfully.

If it was mine I would actually. The headstock could have snapped in some much trickier places. (unless i looked at the pics wrong) its away from the nut, the truss rod, and youve only got the tension of the three lowest tensioned strings.

The only awkward part i can see would be clamping such a funny shape.

I'm thinking I might puy a couple of thin screws up through it. Looks near impossible to get a good clamp position on it. Glue it into position first of course though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Do not under any circumstances screw it. My Brother is a Luthier, and he repaired my old Fender Squier 9 years ago (The HSH heavy metal one, not the strat look alike) when it snapped at the nut. What you need to do is get a Luthier to use some wood glue, clamp it, and then drive 2 maple dowels (Long ones) perpendicularly into the headstock and again, seal it with wood glue. It's possible to repair it, it'll be expensive, but the easier option is to buy a donor axe from fleabay and scavange parts.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

I've been scavanging already, problem is it's a 24 fret and I'm going to be particular about having sharkfin inlays and I don't want the reverse headstock... Don't ask for much do I?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

You're perfectly entitled to have it back the way it was. Keep looking, and maybe ask some Custom builders, it shouldn't be a difficult thing to copy. You might even find some people who have the prebuilt for projects - I know a lot of US builders keep Ibanez copy necks ready to fit.

Youve already got a (presumably good) fretboard with sharkfin inlays, so thats one less thing to worry about.

I think the best thing you could do is take some good pitctures of the break up-close, and post a thread on something similar to Project guitar forum. The advice you get there will give you the best idea if a repair is within your own personal capabilities.

    http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/necks/necks.cfm?fuseaction=jackson_baritone

This company will do Shark Fin inlays for you too, or as voodoo_child stated, you have a decent fretboard with inlays, get a Luthier to transfer that, and get a car sprayer to do the headstock (Or, sit down and do the prep work yourself before spraying - it's easy). Get a signwriter to run off the Jackson Logo as a spraying template, spray that in white, then do lacquer over top.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

I was going to suggest doing everything yourself. Replacing a fretboard isnt difficult, and the headstock is easy as ned said. Jackson logos can be bought off ebay.

EDIT - i looked at that site, and it would be just as handy to get sharkfins done by them for the sake of $90 or whatever it is.

You should be able to put a small sash cramp on the headstock and use wood glue. If you put glue on both sides and push them in tight so they are matching up flush, then put a sash cramp over the headstock with one shoe facing the black side with the logo if ya get me, put it perpendicular to the neck. That should be good enough with the cramp just to hold the two pieces in place, you shouldnt need it to apply pressure in the direction of the snap. Obviously that'd be ideal if you could but its an awkward snap. Make sure you put rubber pads or thin dense foam etc over the neck to stop the cramp marking it. TBH id attempt the fix myself first as thats the sort of repair that'll cost you an arm and a leg from a pro. It might need a refin after that but thats no biggy, sound structure is more important

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

Actually that snap looks straight, id nearly have a go with a biscuit joiner to be honest as opposed to dowelling, biscuits are easy to get right

I don't fancy doing it myself, haven't got much experience. How much roughly would a pro charge?

How much is your car worth? :p

You're looking at a couple of hundred.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 936 ✭✭✭Beecher

This would be a better option to getting a pro repair. If thats too much Mighty mite also make a direct replacement neck but it may need a little fret work on arrival.

Edit: I actually have a neck lying around that would work for the mean time. 24 frets, sharkfin inlays, last four frets are scalloped. It has a reverse headstock though. Its a neck from a project, the back of the neck has been finished but the headstock hasnt yet but its yours if you want it.

Trawled through ebay earlier myself and didn't see that one. Just bought it. Gotta pay for it now... I think my credit card may just go on fire

Edit: Beecher just saw your edit after I bought the other neck.. I have another couple of guitars so I won't need yours but I really appreciate the offer.. Thanks

Dude you let a woman handle your guitar? You know she did that on purpose because she wants you to get a "real " job and settle down. Dump her immediately.

I have on occasion been accused of caring for the guitar more than I do about her, which I always assure her is not true.. Then when she leaves the room I hug and kiss my guitars:D

Thankfully the guitars always understand why we have to lie to our girlfriends about them. ;)

What happened to the 10 year old Marshall exactly?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

When I changed channel at a high volume there was a bang from the speaker, i had a look at the speaker and there was a rip in it. Very strange. Actually I think it was more than ten years old. I bought it second hand about 7 years ago. It was a valvestate 8040

Ah, never mind so. ;) If it was something special I was going to try and pressure you into getting it fixed!

It did what I needed it to do and was plenty loud for me, I rarely play outside my apartment. I really liked the sound from it though.

Take my advice - hide your credit card. Use www.xe.com to get the price in Euro.

Hey there's this guy Eugene I did a few gigs with once, he's the business when comes to fixing guitars, like he makes his own I think. They know him in Musician Inc, and he lives near Harcourt St. Piece o' piss for him I reckon. I'd say if you're gonna just fix the head it would wanna be done right cos any slight movement or give after it's fixed and your guitar will be bang out of tune.

It's got a locking nut. It won't go any more out of tune than it ever did. ;) It just need to be able to cope with the tension of the strings at pitch without the repair separating.

Sorry, don't take that the wrong way. :) Volume is irrelevent to me, the vs just never had the same tone as some of the older valve marshalls. The thought of any potentially reparable valve amp makes me a little twitchy. :D Perhaps of equal importance anyway, valve amps are quite expensive and generally not that hard to repair - so it might have been more worth your while!

But all the same, if it's just the speaker it'd be very easy to replace that if it's an open cab combo. You just need to look at the old one and find something new with the same impedance and wattage. You can get celestions in from the UK. Under a hundred euros incl shipping I'd say.

I'd encourage you to try to fix it your self. It'll probably work and if it doesnt work then you're only out the price of a bottle of wood glue and some clamps (or elastic bands even)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

I bought the replacement that Beecher linked above. I'm going to repair the old one myself now and fit it to an old Ibanez body I have.

How the hell is that guitar only 152 quid???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭Eoin Madsen

It's probably made from MDF with a photograph of some flamed maple glued on and finished over. ;)

LMAO! My wife suspects I do that very thing - she sometimes doubles back trying to catch me. But I have a small amp posted near the door to keep sketch for me!

No disrespect to yer man, and he was mad busy when I dealt with him, and I've also heard sterling first-hand recommendations about his work, but everyone has an off-day. Read my comments at http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055032083. Just something to be aware of...

However, I got one of my guitars refretted by Tony Thompson, who is an actual luthier, and he did a class job on the refret (and gave me a graphite nut, which I hadn't asked for. Which may be a minus in some people's eyes...) Google him, as I can't accurately remember his website, but I think it was something like "thompsonguitars.ie". He's based in north Wicklow.

I feel sorry for your girlfriend, that must have been really awkward when she dropped it, you're all pissed off but trying not to be an ass to her and saying, "its ok, it was an accident, dont worry" when u are actually on fire inside, been there. I'd say the look on her face was priceless.

Hmmm... maybe he's shut up shop. I still have a mobile number for him, but I suppose there's no guarantee that'll work. I'll PM you with it. He made two beautiful walnut basses for a friend of mine, one an active 4 string, the other a passive fretless five string. Lovely instruments. If he's no longer making, or no longer making in Ireland, it's a loss.
