A completely pointless thread, because there's no such thing as best, and nothing is ever definitive?

Karl did you leave your happy hat at home today ?

    My vote:

    A) Cynic - Focus
    B) Death - Individual Tought Patterns

    A) At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
    B) Sacramentum - Far Away From the Sun / In Flames - Jester Race

It's impossibly difficult to narrow it down to even 2 choices.

    In no particular order:
    Grave - Into The Grave
Immolation - Close To A World Below
Dismember - Like An Everflowing Stream
    Bloodbath - Resurrection Through Carnage
    Death - Human
    Bolt Thrower - Mercenary

Frankly it was a struggle to keep it down to 6.

Im going to get slated for theese choices but to me:

Nile - Anhialation of the wicked
    Decapitated - Nihility

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

In either order, and just two random favourites of mine:

    Nile-In Their Darkened Shrines
    Opeth-My Arms, Your Hearse

    Morbid Angel - Covenant
    Decapitated - Winds of Creation.

    Can't be beaten!

I haven't been listening to Death Metal all that long but favourites would be

1 Morbid Angel: Covenant or Blessed are the Sick

2 Suffocation: Effigy of the Forgotten

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 952 ✭✭✭Prezatch

    1) Obituary - Cause of Death
    2) Necrophagist - Onset of Putrefaction

I also like Patricide's choices. As for At The Gates having the greatest death metal album of all time...dunno about that son

Isis is death metal? Have i missed something?

Isis evolved from hardcore sphere of influence and progressed far from their origin but that has never been anything near death metal. . .

1 Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines
2 Death - Individual Thought Patterns

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Isis are definitely not death metal in my opinion. Uh-oh, genre war!

    1. Atheist - Piece of Time
    2. Death - Human

The album just kills me every time I put it on. Each song is full of riffs that make me want to attack passers-by. The vocals are great also, harsh but very listenable, and Tomas gets away with just going 'aaaaoohhhhh!' a few times over the riffs because they sound so good. Lots of great choices here mind, albums by Morbid Angel, Decapitated and Death would be in my top 10 should I ever make one.

Just listen to the riff in Suicide Nation at 2:21 - If that doesn't get you going you must already be dead!

JoeyD, the thing about "greatest xxx evar!11!!" threads is you cant be wrong, its purely opinion, however if it was most influential, then you would have a point.

    As for myself:
    Lykathea Aflame - Elvenfris
    In Flames - Whoracle

Surprised noone has mention Whoracle or Jester Race yet, despite what In Flames have become, them 2 albums are nothing short of masterpiece's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,630 ✭✭✭gline

    bloodthorn - genocide
    necrophagist - epitah
    or
morbid angel - gateways to annihilation

also a big fan of at the gates - the red in the sky is ours

As much as i love those two albums i wouldnt really class them as death metal in the usual sense. But hey thats just my opinion.

Great album. Gline, I love 'The Red in the Sky Is Ours' too, much rawer and bleaker than their later stuff. Although my favourite ATG track is Primal Breath from 'With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness'. When that variation on the main riff first kicks in later in the song I nearly shat myself, it's so good!

    Right you are Morf!

I think it was the fact that there's a Nile album in the running that made me temporarily lose the run of myself.

    Mine is:

    Cynic: Focus
    Morbid Angel: Covenant
    Death: Leprosy
Death: Symbolic (sure its more technical, But still death metal)
    Bloodbath: Nightmares Made Flesh
    Decapitated: Negation
    Nechrophagist: Epitaph

    1. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness

    eh...in a non gay way! :p
tho i prefer The Sound of Perseverance to ITP. Focus is an unbelievably awesome album

i find it hard to believe that you've never heard of tech death metal, especially considering the fact that you listed Necrophagist in your answer

as long as its not Black Seeds of Vengeance, everything is ok :p

These threads are always the most maddeningly toughest ones to post on :D ...I'm such a passionate DM fan with dozens of fave records. What the heck, before I get all confused and frustrated from thinking too long about my own 'best' and 'runner-up', lemme just quickly name two that instantly spring to mind:

    winner: Pierced from Within---Suffocation
    runner-up: The End Complete----Obituary

but hey, I notice some of you guys have reeled off a bunch of names anyway...how about if I also mention the following in my permanently prized personal picks:

    Slowly We Rot----Obituary
    Individual Thought Patterns----Death
    Legion---Deicide
    Effigy of the Forgotten----Suffocation
    Altars of Madness
    Morbid Angel
    Retribution
    Malevolent Creation
    None So Vile----Cryptopsy

no, I must stop before I get carried away and ruin this thread...;)

As said above, Isis are most definitely not Death Metal. Get the facts right.

I am absolutely astonished by the lack of mentions for Winds of Creation by Decapitated. It is a death metal masterpiece imo.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

I was just about to post Winds of Creation Pornapster! It's a savage album, easily one of the most impressive Death Metal albums.

I also think the afore mentioned None So Vile, Effigy of the Forgotten, Serpernts of the Light.

What about (my old favourite, controversial maybe) Molesting the Decapitated from Devourment :D

Seems like Morbid Angel and Death are winning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,969 ✭✭✭buck65

Yes Karl, by my tally in the clear joint lead is Human by Death and Covenant by Morbid Angel.
Followed closely by Blessed are the sick, Individual thought patterns, In their darkened shrines, Necrotism, Focus, Winds of Creation.

Was actually a little surprised by some of the placings in the Terrorizer list,
no problems with Altars at no 1, Deicide at 2? come on its decent but childish I think, I reckon Leprosy is there because of its Influence but its not their best album.
Delighted to see Mental Funeral in there but surely not no . 9!! when Cause of Death is 29!! and 2 Nile albums is excessive.
Sepultura shouldnt even be there and if they were it should be Morbid Visions as everything after that was absolutely Thrash.
    Cannibal Corpse at 12!!
    WTF
anyway end of rant I reckon there is alot of good stuff in that list

Ah, lists are always pointless ventures. Nothing is ever definitive, and everyone will disagree.

Just listening to an oldie but Goldie last night- Dreams of the Carrion Kind by Disincarnate l- James Murphy's band and it is fantastic some great stuff on there!!
See from his website that he underwent eye surgery and has lost feeling in some of his fingers as a side effect temporarily but is due to release a 2nd Disincarnate album this year.
    A great guitarist.

Are any of these albums more than 5 years old?

Morbid visions would have to be up there yet it dosent get a mention.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,969 ✭✭✭buck65

Morbid Visions is a great death metal record all right, Sepultura definitely became more thrashier in Beneath..onwards.
Back to your question the frontrunners Morbid Angel and Death are all from the early to mid 90s, as is Athiest, Suffocation, Disincarnate as well as some modern bands Nile Opeth etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭Gabriel

Morbid Angel - Blessed are the sicks
    Deicide -Legion

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,969 ✭✭✭buck65

That makes Blessed are the sick and Covenant by Morbid Angel along with Human by Death as our frontrunners.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,315 ✭✭✭Sam Hain

    Obituary 'Slowly we rot'
    Paradise Lost 'lost paradise'

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭scubagit

Ok, so here's my two cents!!
Actually I'm having real problems putting these things in order as I love em all for different reasons. They all represent a much simpler time before kids and mortgages and car trouble!!
    Anyway (wiping away tears).....
    Emtombed - Clandestine
    Carcass - Necroticism....
    Deicide- Legion
    Death - Spiritual Healing
Terrorizer - World Downfall (technically grind I know but a timeless classic)
    Obituary - Cause of Death
Dismenber - Like an ever flowing stream
    Napalm Death - Harmony corruption
Brutal truth - Extreme Conditions.. (see terrorizer)

By the way, anyone going to Brutal truth?? (FEB 8th)

To be honest I can't undersand why albums by Deicide and Morbid Angel are regarded as such classics of the genre. I appreciate the fact that they were innovative at the time etc but when i try to listen to it I find it impossible to warm to. Theres no melody to speak of at all. Even the heaviest bands can have melody, however basic, but a band like Deicide just sounds like a drumkit and few guitars getting kicked around a room. I like a song to have one or more of of a few different things - perhaps a great riff or melody, solid musicianship or maybe something new that i havent really heard before.

I now expect a good shouting at!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,969 ✭✭✭buck65

no need to shout at anyone
just vote for your favourite death metal albums!
In fairness it youre looking for melody this might not be the thread...apart from the Swedes like Opeth maybe.
