Richard Dawkins is a legend. A bit popsciencey but a legend all the same. Have you read the Blindwatch maker or The Selfish Gene. I hear he has a new book out saw him pushing it on The Panel. What is it with BJJ and atheists? Can't be one without the other???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,995 ✭✭✭Tim_Murphy

Arrived in London a few days ago, Dawkin's new book is everywhere, much more mainstream than I thought it would be. I was planning on buying it but didn't think it would be in the window of most book shops. Just started into it yesterday, interesting read so far.
I hear he has a new book out saw him pushing it on The Panel.
http://richarddawkins.net/article,403,The-Panel-with-Richard-Dawkins,RTE-2-Ireland His appearance on the late late show is on that site as well. The late late was disappointing.

Well dispite my complaining there is still a cross hanging up in the combat sports centre in Limerick! :)

i've read the blindwatch maker and am now making my way through that new book The God Delusion, excellent stuff. very simple and makes complete sense when you think about it.

Those of you into the Richard Dawkins books should visit the athiesm/agnosticism forum, there are some great threads and debates on there. Well worth a read of 'the most logical belief' thread a few months back.

That furious Angels video, one of the ramon dekkers highlights with rage against the machine soundtrack to it and the 6min long marcelo garcia highlight.Oh and the fight between Leo Viera and Rany Yahyra(sp?). Soooooo sweet.

    Serious inspiration.

    Hi all,

Just out of interest, does anyone have an opinion on the Spartan's practise of slave culls?

slave culls, I dont see anything wrong with that.... at the time it was duely accepted and slaves were well aware of it, many of the helots were also set free as well, dont forget that....

Sons of spartan fathers knew the would be getting some extra "attention" from their fathers, theyalso knew they get thrown off a cliff if they werent good enough in their spartan armies.... why do you think they were the toughest army every to walk the earth.... why would they stand with Leonidas and await certain death.... its cos they were brought up that way

another great and relatively unknown battle was that called "Camerone" where 62 french foreign legion soldiers fought over 2000 mexicans in 1863

after several days fightin there were only 6 legionaress left and they ran at the mexican army firing off shots..... modern day spartans i do believe

Actually, to get a purple belt in young spartans you've to either kill a slave or defeat a giant. Most chose to defeat a giant, but that's only because we haven't found that many slaves yet. They're not against it.

    What's your point Michael?

    Dragan,
Thanks! Adam from the clip is the guy who put the whole thing together, tasty no.

    Hi all,

While I have no problems with anyones faith or lack their of or spiritual directions or intellectualisation of the universal forces at play in everyday life....I still believe in the mystery of my faith....I am what you would describe as an agnostic zen budo catholic with mild demon worshipping tendencies and even though I believe him to have been a mere man with flaws...whose whole reputation was built up overs the millenias...he is still the man...imagine the amount of chicks this guy got....they say one in every 200 men alive today can trace their lineage back to Ghengis Khan....well I would say it is even more for my guy....

What chick could refuse this......How you doing type style?
    Truly inspirational....

I'd recomend "Persian Fire", it goes into detail with both the Greek side and the persian side and their histories.

Why is he so popular all of a sudden...??

Read Devil's Chaplain a few years ago... excellent reading

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 95 ✭✭scuttery1

Watched a dvd called "Kali means to scrape" a while back. It's an American dudes trip to the Phillipines to meet the old masters. In one priceless scene he's interviewing this old guy who when younger was a real bowsie and scrapper but found God and gave up the sticks. The interviewer asks him in that breathlessly expectant way to divulge the secrets of the art the reply is "...you only need 3 simple things to be great at martial art, lightening speed, good strenght and excellent technique" He turns and wanders off leaving the poor auld Yank staring.
    :D Priceless

lol, don't think he's popular 'all of a sudden'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,995 ✭✭✭Tim_Murphy

I agree, he has been very well known by anyone who have an interest in the subjects he speaks about for a long time. His new book however does seem to be getting a lot of publicity. That won't necessarily make him more popular of course considering many of his opinions!

At least four people have mentioned him to me in the last week or two... then I see a post here about him... my Mum even mentioned his name quite recently.... thats all of a sudden!!

I see his new book is on the bestseller lists... I guess I've answered my own question :)
