cardio & weights - splitting the sessions

The cardio work is always going to be the most important for me. I'm an athelte and as coaches always say "to run faster, you've got to run faster!" That aside I have started doing som weights in order to try and lose some fat and increase strength (particularly upper body strength). At the moment I train once a day, alternating hard days with easy days and taking a day of completely about once a week (sometimes less, sometimes more). I'm considering splitting my training, doing the cardio in the morning (before the stresses of the day tire me too much) and the weights at night? What are the pro's and con's to this approach?

I would first ask which sport you are training for?

That's a more complicted question than you might expect. My main sport is ultra-dsitance and marathon running. I've also done a couple of ironman distance triathlons and hope to do a few more in 2007. Swimming is my weakest and I really need to develop upper body strength to "pull" the water. I also do a couple of other sports but not competitavely.
