I'm revisiting the old stomping ground this week and figured i might need to alter my play for a slow self deal pub game. I did a search for old threads on this but couldnt find anything.

    Any ideas?

this is very constructive advice. I feel having read your wise words i will be able to fine-tune my existing poker skills to maximise my profitability at a pub tournament. Thank you Lloyd, and keep the pearls of wisdom coming...

Be prepared to suck out to a runner runner after making a pot sized bet on the flop and turn.

your better off playing a freezeout as you get compulsive gamblers who like to play bingo at the rebuy's.

I think its a case of only taking them on with made hands, you can see a lot of cheap flops usually so take advantage of that aspect too i would say JT!!! (not dissimilar actully)

    Hi Jeff,

While pub tournies has a bad rap with some of the people that post here. I think the best advice i can give you is to pick a structure that best suits your game, i.e freezeout

True you will get some crazy play with players learning the game. I find the standard to be considerably better at freezeout games when compared to rebuy games for 2 reasons.

Firstly a new player to the game is unlikely to pay into the game (as they tend to be more expensive)

Secondly the ones that do buy in tend to drop off early in the tournament do to reckless play.

Hope this is of some help to.

    Jp

    1. Dont bluff (well - minimise bluffs)
    2. Bet more than usual with your good hands
    3. Keep pots managable while drawing
    4. Drink less than the other players!

uh oh jeff, youre going to have tone down the drinking!

nice to see your getting really adventurous with your share of lloyds winnings!!

    poker world watch out!

but bn serious, just dont bluff, and do whts neccessary to get paid on your big hands. ie if its the non believer who calls everyone to keep em honest, over bet
if its the drunk, than jus let him bluff every street and raise river. speech play works like a charm and jus get ur chips in ahead and get ready to be outdrawn!

    Pub Game Tips:

    1. Limp whenever possible to get in cheap, flop a house, and bet all you want, some donk will come along. Overbetting means nothing to alot of pub players.

    2. After the freezeout period begins, tighten up pre-flop, still play good hand agressively. It's all about have a monster stack when the final table crapshoot begins.

So Pub tourni with Ditpoker yesterday. Well way we figured it, it might be a fun way to spend a sunday afternoon.

Posters said it starts at half four and with 5000 chips and 1000 extra for early bird chips this would have to allow us some play surley wudnt it. ah it would have to. Ok well maybe we hoped it might.

18 runners so got to fancy our chances here. Wait sorry whats that you say no 25-50 level cause people were watching football but we were here waiting oh this does not boud well.

    100-200 level
    200-400
    300-600
400-800 ten gone including myself in 9th
    500-1k
    1k-2k jeff gone in fourth

so under two hours with 6k starting stacks and we had three left. What a joke. When Ditpoker asked what the prize structure was he was told it was a suprise. He then said but it will affect how i play oh ok you can look but nobody else.

on plus points people were pretty nice and i love the 108 great pub eevn went there to write my xmas cards.

    pub tourney strategy,

    Show up at the break,
ask the players knocked out do they want a side game,
Start a side game made up of you, bad players knocked out early, and good players knocked out early by crazy beats and are now on tilt.
Final step, win the side game

I would have folded those aces, no need to get involved ;)

I have to say that is a joke of a structure, even more so when you consider that the game started so early in day and the TD is under no pressure for time.

I would recommend that you ask what the structure is before playing in pub tournies.

There are some very good pub games out with the full blind structure, i just hope this game hasn't put you off playing pub tournie games in the future.

Ha ive heard that one before, i was playing in my local badminton centre. I had the aces and the other lad had 66, and yer man with the 66 pipes up "dont know what your looking so smug about, i'm as likely to get a 6 as you are an ace."

He was right and i'm heading for the door after the rivers a 6!!

Whiteknight is spot on. he must have played poker before.
when you have a hand pre flop make very large raises, and keep the pot manageable when you are drawing.
Play suited hands because you get a lot of free draws

Here is a thread from earlier in the year,

I still play this tournament average size is 24 and I finish in the money on about every 2nd week quite profitable. Because of the new drink driving laws I stay sober at these tournaments and find I do particularly well once the final table comes around. Standard of play is still pretty poor, but after a while you get to know your players, it's very hard to steal pots, but you can make a good stack with the likes of TPTK etc.

Here's a report from a couple of weeks later the same guy still plays from time to time and rarely lasts an hour (revenge and all that).

I go all in 9,800 he says call then says he was only joking! 15 minutes of arguments and physical threats later the TD has to nearly pull the chips of him and I win.

Anyway we are ready for the final table, But he refuses to go to the table thinking the poor TD is stealing chips of him.

    LOL, brilliant stuff.

And I love the 'payout structure is a surprise' in Aodea's post.
