Just wondering, for those that have the little bundle of joy, what's it like? First impressions? And, most importantly, did you manage to get Zelda?

I have to say I'm more than happy especially as it was a last minute whim to get one before xmas.

First off the look and feel of the whole package is what I can only describe as "simply delightful". From the moment I turned it on using the Wiimote instead of having to slog 2ft to the Wii, I was hooked. The Wiimote itself is the perfect size and weight though I think the nunchuck could have been a tad heavier as it feels a little cheap in comparison.

The setup is a doddle and took less than 5 minutes but I still haven't managed to get it online yet (but it's my dodgy Magnet modem and not the Wii at fault). Messing around with the Mii channel is fun and there's millions of combinations for those who like to get their virtual appearance just right.

Onto Wii Sports and I have to say Nintendo did well to include this as it is literally hours of fun straight out of the box. I has baseball, bowling, golf, tennis and my favorite boxing. Not only is it fun but it's great at teaching you how the Wiimote and nunchuck work together. That said it is easy fool the sensor with some of the games once you cop on to the mechanics, allowing you to basically cheat.

Wii Play is superb, great multiplayer and a real showcase as to what sort of "party games" will be coming out. Again, like Sports, it eases you into how the controllers work while your having fun too. Theres 9 mini games (perhaps more can be unlocked, I'm not sure) ranging from Pool to Laser Hockey to Ping-Pong . I've been playing for a while now and I'm not bored in the slightest.

Finally Zelda, I've only begun but I can definitely say it's living up to the hype. Everything about it is great and you can really get the sense of a nice big and long and utterly classic Zelda epic from it. My only two gripes would be that at some point in the game so far the graphics have been sloppy and almost N64 texture wise but you'll be so into it you wont care, the other thing is that the Wiimote targeting seems a bit sluggish. Not sure if it's the setting I have or just the game but I'll have a look and see later.

Well that's it from me, got the Wii at 12.15, been playing up to 8.30 and it's is just great!

Apologies if any of that made no sense, I'm quite delirious at this stage.

I can't believe how tiny the damn thing is!

I'm very happy, with it, and it's everything that I thought it would be, but the sheer smallness of it, confirms my fears that it won't be able to keep up with the other two consoles in the years to come!

Still, I 'm delighted and am now off to play Zelda.
See ye in a month....or two!

Interface and general layout of the Wii is fantastic very impressed. The Wii remote and nunchuk are really well designed and work well with games.

WiiSports is superb! Nothing like swing the remote around like it was a tennis racket and or using nunchuk with remote to beat up some guy in boxing!

    WiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiP :D

I just got the wii yesterday - a day before release thanks to sweet talking a shop assistant - and played wii sports for a while last night. I have to say ninitendo could have done a lot more with the graphics. I don't think the graphics are as good as a PS2 and definitely nowhere near as good as an Xbox1. Now I know it's not about the graphics, but they really should have done better than that... it's going to look old very soon.

The remote really is a fantastic piece of engineering and the initial feeling when browsing the menus and having it pulse in your hand when you hiughlight a button is class - ver intuitive - make me wish that the PC mouse would pulse when I hover the cursor over a button... or even in quake if the mouse gave a slight pulse when you shoot someone .. kind of like the "ping" noise in Q3..

The overall package is good and fits together very well.

I find that wii sports is a bit "fluffy" - i.e. you don't have as much control over what's going on as I'd like. The graphics in it are simply brutal - no textures or detail and poor rendering. Perhaps it's a matter of getting used to the controls. Next on the shopping list is a component cable and a copy of Zelda - both seem impossible to get..

got my wii at 8:30 and got on of the few remaining copied of zelda in limerick
    plugged it in simple setup
literally got used to the controls straight away so simple
played wii sports its grand but without multiplayer...

as for zelda loving the game so far but it looks like OOT on my hdtv,
    lol btw im stuck already
am i supposed to give the cat to the woman but i cant pick it up and i cant buy the slingshot because she's too depressed about the cat lol

Picked up my Wii, Play, Zelda, Monkey Ball, extra nunchuk, memory card, and points at 7.30 a.m. Went straight home, opened the box, and was very impressed. The console is tiny, very pretty, and packaged nicely. Set-up was very quick, literally took five minutes. I created my Mii, which was fun. Played with Sports. Tennis is great fun, so is boxing. I found the baseball very difficult, but with practise I'll improve (hopefully). Wii Play is great fun. It's amazing how quickly you pick up the controls just by messing around with Sports and Play. Started Monkey Ball and found the controls very difficult to grasp so I'll come back to that later when I'm not so tired. Been playing Zelda for a while too, and it's just wonderful :)

Have decided it's all so much fun that I want more games. I'm thinking I'll try Red Steel out. Running out of money... Happy days!

Is the light around the cd tray supposed to turn on? It only flashes when I turn the machine on, not when i play games.

    Very very impressed btw

    red steel here I come!!!

Got wii + zelda at 8 this morning, played wii sports for the best part of an hour (getting used to the pad) now on zelda :D

The console itself is very slick, and very small.

Playing on a 26" HDLCD through ccomposite is really painfull though, zelda looks like a freakin' dreamcast game*

(may be over the top, guess I'm just used to HD GoW, splinter cell etc on 360)

No mate I completely agree with you. Picture just looks plain sh*t with the composite cable.

Couldnt get a frickin scart or component cable anywhere...

It's annoying. Ye spend a wad of cash on a piece of kit, only to see the games through washed out, jaggidy flickery crappy picture.

Nintendo should have made a multi cable standard with every wii, the picture is just shocking after a year with 360...

You will need to get a component cable to make it look decent on a HD tv.
Its blurry on my HD tv.

oh, i'll be getting the cable, would seem foolish not to after spending all the money on a tv!

    Pros;
A doddle to get up and running (even the wifi aspect was a lot less painless than the DS)
    Drop dead gorgeous <3
Controls feel perfectly natural after a couple of hours play
Zelda is shaping up to be my game of the year
    Classic Controller is pretty cool

    Cons;
Sensor bar doesn't work well if you're up close, which sucks with my 14" tv:(
That cool blue light should be on all the time!
Wii Sports doesn't hold much single player appeal
    Very poor selection on VC
Horrible tinny sounding speaker in Wiimote
No VGA output, so I have to wait for my flatmate to finish watching ****ty soaps before I can use it again:p

pretty much all of the cons bar the last 2 are moot points, so all in all i'm very impressed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,522 ✭✭✭dor83

got mine with Zelda, Red Steel, Need for Speed and Rayman in Gamestop Navan this morning at 8. they had 8 extra consoles and they took everybody who didnt get 1s name and no. and said they would ring them and give them 1st option on the next batch.
Only had a quick go of red steel coz i had to go to work. It seems ok but the controls will take some getting used to. goin to play zelda and NFS now .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

I had two at one stage:D
I have given it to my friend and all now.
I have my Wii two Wiimotes two Nun-chucks a classic control.
Wii Sports Wii Play and Zelda.I have to say the console is so much fun.
I updated the firmware and software on it and have it connected to the net and all.

I played a good bit of Zelda and am about to sit down and enjoy play and sports. So who did I see or not see at GAME Henry street this morning at opening time?

    Oh and 1huge1,
I suck at fishing also.I got two bites in the space of an hour.
And I still haven't given it to the bloody cat yet!!!
You get better rods further in though so let's pray fishing becomes fun at some point.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

    fishing is actually easy...
just drop the line in and wait for a fish to bite and then yank it back quickly over your shoulder and keep it there (bad explaination but you get the picture...)
try fishing from the dock next to the cat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

The sound on the Wiimote really is dreadful. Have half a mind to turn it off all together, but I'll wait and see if it actually adds anything first (haven't really delved into games yet.. been spending the last couple of hours just checking out the settings, making a Mii and stuff like that :D).

Played about five minutes of Zelda and the same of WiiSports Tennis. Don't think I'll be going back to WiiSports much until I get an extra Wiimote, and the lack of a C-Stick to control the camera in Zelda is something that annoyed me straight away. I thought the Wiimote would do this :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

ya i finally figured out the fishing too
    dead simple
wait till the bait is just being pulled underwater then face the controller up
    hey presto theres your fish
then the cat took a fish and thats were im at
taking a break for a while
my arms are dead after playing boxing

Was up at 5 for mine and wasnt disappointed!

Brought back Red Steel in favour of Zelda (Im not a zelda fan but RS was a bit crappy tbh).

Rayman is good and wii sports is most entertaining. The remote is brilliant but I think not all the games are using it as well as they could. Im very interested to see what mario metroid et al bring to the table as you can feel the potential when you move the bat around in the baseball game for example.

Graphics are woeful in comparison to the likes of Gears of War but the fun element is 200% intact.

Good purchase - cant wait to buy more games. Oh and get that browser up please nintendo

I heard a lot of that alright, prior to release. I think it's fine though, and does add another dimension (perhaps Nintendo stole Sony's 4th?).

Haven't seen much of the blue light either. Is there something you can do that should cause it to light up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,181 ✭✭✭✭Jim

You sure? It's not on all the time...
It blinks quickly once when I turn the Wii on, but never comes on when I put a disc in etc...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

Sounds grand then, least that's how mine acts too! It was on standby there and the light was on for a good bit, but it's gone off now . I think it just comes and goes as it pleases :).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

My light only comes on when I boot up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,181 ✭✭✭✭Jim

Ah, thought it came on when you loaded a disc.
Don't feel any better about it knowing its normal. I demand disc loading light!

think the blue light comes on when it's using wiiconnect24 as well (at least judging by the wii options screen anyway...)
smellyirishman's wii could've been updating while it was in standby

From what I read before gettin my Wii, I thought that if the Wii was on with no disc in, the blue light would be on, and turn off when the disc is in. (This would look awesome)
Was gutted when it did that thing where it just flashes once when you turn it on, because the blue light in all the pics of the Wii looks great!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

It comes on if you recieve a message or new content via Wiiconnect24. Its an alert so you know you have new message or content. It makes sense although people probably would have preferred if it turned off when you got new content and was on the rest of the time.

Can't have everything. Take me for example, I don't even have a Wii.

The only problem i've had is GAME over here being backstards of the highest order
Theres a bit of a shortage of wiimotes over here, so my mate and I went around dundee looking for someplace that would have one, so more than 2 players could could be on Wii sports at the same time.

My friend brings it up to the counter
Game Drone: "you can't buy that unless you buy a console"
My friend: "ok, do you have a console i can buy"
Game Drone: "nope, all sold out"
My friend: "so... can i buy it then?"
Game Drone: "i told you, with a console only"
My friend: "that you don't have... right"

seriously, what the feck is that about?

But on the plus side my Mii looks like Patrick Stewart, having Jean-Luc Picard kicking ass in Boxing is cool.

Just spent the last couple of hours having my first go at Wii Sports with some of the family. ****ing great stuff :D

I only have the one Wiimote so we just played bowling and golf, and a go each at boxing. They weren't lying when they said this stuff is good fun :D

Then I found the 'Wii Sports Fitness' yoke - fantastic.
