    Well here it goes…
Due to a combination of bad luck, shockingly bad play and bad variance I’ve lost a good few quid lately, which is more than I really should have.
I will prob make a return to the game at some stage in the New Year as I feel I am at least im a good player that has potential and I really love the game but I really just can’t deal with it at the moment.
I wish every one a very happy xmas and a good new year and hope you have good holidays and good times at the tables.
I will not be posting here either as I feel it’s the only way to take a clean break from the game.
The very best of luck to every one.

    Gholli,

It is plainly obvious from your posts on here that you are a very capable player - enjoy your break, come back with a clear head, full of energy and you will destroy the tables.

Have a good christmas and new year.

See you in the fitz friday Gholi. :p

I see the infamous Gholi posting here about temporary retirement due to as he says 'bad varience' AND shocking play' and it made me wonder, does one lead to the other if you don't get a handle on it? For example recently I've had a run of bad beats that defied the laws of probability. At the time I reckon I was playing pretty good (well for me) getting in ahead and deep in tournys. . However since then I have been knocked out of 4 tournaments and ALL 4 I could have got away from . I just seemed to have lost the plot in them. Now this would not have happened 3 months ago... so I began to realise I've let the bad varience influence my play and instead of getting in ahead as I like to do I've allowed myself to 'gamble' a bit more to the point of as Gholi says 'shocking play' I'm just wondering if this is what happens to a lot of people after a bad run....I've decided to look out for this going forward and revert to my old game and let the poker gods sht on me all they like.

Having said that Gholi IMHO you let your obvious indept knowledge of the game both statistical and otherwise go to waste by 'getting jiggy' a bit too often with marginal hands (from what little I've seen ) So instead of retiring maybe just play using your logical knowlege of odds and positional play and see what happens from there and leave the tricky stuff until you get your confidence back.

The thought of Gholi retiring from poker reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where Barney decides to give up drinking.

There's as much chance of luckyloyd learning to fold small pairs as there is gholi retiring...never ever gonna happen.

I have been there done that and worn the tee-shirt. Took a full (yes shocking) 3 months off from cards completely, came back full of enthusiasm and actually really looked forward to playing a game. I also cut down the amount of times I play, which I have tried to stick to. I only play maybe twice a week. I think you are right though Gholi, if you don't feel right don't play cards.

It was a pleasure meeting you and your analysis of hands and situations in your posts are brilliant and will be sadly missed.

Happy Christmas and I’ll see you soon

Definitely find this. A few weeks back went through a series of ridiculous beats. Then followed some games where I was just making terrible calls. Clicking the call button for all my chips when I know I'm behind. Convincing myself for that split second he's pushing with a small pair when it's ridiculuous, Calling with 2 pair against and obvious set etc etc:mad: Just couldnt seem to lay down ahead when it was obvious I was behind.

I think its like a striker going through a barren spell. You just snatch at chances hoping your ahead because your desperate for a result.

I stopped playing online, took a break for a week, then played a live game the weekend and tried to concentrate on getting back to the basics and got a good result.
I think its too easy for this to happen online as the clock ticks down, take a break, play live and take some time over making the correct decisions.

    hi,

i retired to sit my finals, and then decided to spend my bankroll on having the best summer of my life (mission accomplished). after that i never really planed to start again. however i am incredibly bored at work, so i came back onto the boards and now i'm back trying to learn how to play PLO. currently i'm a break even player (after blowing my bankroll on saturday after i came home from the night club)

moral of the story is that you are always going to play when your bored!!

A suggestion Gholi...come back to the 18$/27$ tourneys on tribeca. The prizepools are bigger now and the pickings are easy enuf as there are so many fools playin. Gives you the competitive fix without the pain of those large cash bad beats. I am sure you could get your head straight at this level before returning to cash games.

Or of the one where he is the designated driver and goes on a several month bender as a result of having to spend one night sober.

I too am taking a break for the game.

I have been on the roll of my life over the last 6 months but am totally burned out from the amount of poker i have been playing.

my bankroll is going to be depleted anyways as i take on the responsibility of a new house and sort it out (42" TV on the wall being my priority my wife disagrees but i have earned it).

i plan on playing till the end of this week culminating in the PP 500 game on saturday and just walk away from the game for 3 months... Im kind of excited and feeling eerie at the same time...the withdrawl symptoms worry me.

I'd be very worried for you as well John. I'm not sure if someone with a dependancy like you could deal with that long an absence from the game. You'll be itching very soon and every itch needs to be scratched....

Maybe your just not good enough, like most that post here, myself included, i also dream of being a high roller and think i am good enough to be one, but i'm still sitting here with laptop in hand watching bbc1 and not in a penthouse in vegas bopping 3 chicks out of it. Deal with it!

Sad news Gholi, you'll be missed, both on here and at the tables. I really enjoyed and learned a lot from your posts.

But I'll especially miss your unique and personal brand of The written word:)

Cheers and good luck with it.

P.S. Your too good to stay away, that'd be plain wrong.

I agree, take Ianmc as an example.

He sits in 'work' all day feverishly pressing the F5 button on boards, counting down the seconds until he can leave the confines of the 'workplace'. Itching!

Once home if he isn't multi tabling within 5 minutes he breaks out in a rather nasty looking rash.

Theres an unusual trend developing here. You decide to take a break for a month or two and then post that you are retiring??? No offence guys but is this a search for plaudits to boost the ego or a geniune attempt to let people know you won't be around. It means I've missed a few chances to post about my temporary retirements in the past but then again I might not get the same boost from the likes of "good riddands to ye".
In any case happy christmas Gholi and I'll see you in the new year no doubt with Pillow at the same table :)

little from column A little from column B.

I like to think that I could give up drinking tomorow if the mood took me, however I used to think the same about poker and after failing so dismally I really dont want to delve too deeply into my own pschological weaknesses, what I dont know I hope wont hurt me etc etc.

I deal with poker differently now, I recognise that it is a very real addiction for me but have come to the conclusion that it will only really be a problem I need to deal with if I become a bad player.
