Hip bursitis - advice badly needed....

    Hi, I know there was a post about this back in 2003 that got no response, so am hoping someone might be able to help me now.
    I got a hip bursitis from weight training and have been to a few physio sessions for it. Basically I can't do any of my usual stuff (weights, jogging, walking, golf) except for swimming because the only thing you can do is rest. Prob is, often these things hang about for years and if I start into anything after resting a while, it'll prob just come back.

    One of the solutions is getting a steroid injection, so my questions are:
    Can anyone give me the pros and cons of injection, cos it seems kinda radical to me?
    Also, anyone out there have a bursitis before which went away without having to go the injection route?

    Any advice appreciated as I'm really missing my exercise and worried about never being able to get back into it again.....

    I don't think anyone but a medical proffesional can offer you any REAL advice. What I would say though, is if injections are what they are recommending, then that is probably what to do. Yes it does seem radical, but any less radical than not being able to go for walks, or swing a golf club?

    Yeah, that's a horrible thought, not being able to swing a club again!!
    It's just I read steroid injections have some bad effects, like cortisone flares and flesh whitening etc. But I guess if it's the only solution......

    Hip Bursitis is nasty.

    The bursa itself has a very poor blood supply hence why oral antiinflammatory medication is not very effective (no blood supply to transport the medication to the affected area).

    I'm sure that your physiotherapist has shown you how to stretch out your Tensor Fascia Latae (TFL) muscle (very tough to do properly). Stripping out your ITB (Iliotibial Band) can help a lot even though it isn't the most comfortable but can help considerbly.

    The TFL is a muscle on the hip which extends into and blends into the ITB as it passes over the greater trochanter of the hip. When the muscle or the band is tight it can cause friction between the greater trochanter of the hip and the bursa causing irritation.

    If you have been prescribed a difene or fastum anti-inflammatory gel take it with you on your next physio appointment and ask them to ultrasound it into the area above the bursa. The ultrasound helps to push the antiinflammatory medication deeper into teh tissues.

    While frequent steroid injections are not good for the surrounding soft tissues it may be that you have no other choice. If you can't get it calmed down sufficently to treat tthe cause you are going to be caught in an injury-reinjury cycle.

    If the stretching hasn't / doesn't work then 1-3(max) injestions may be well worth it just to get it calmed down sufficiently to work on the cause whether it be biomechanical (get your physiotherapist to check out your Biomechanics) or training techniques (get a therapist (physio or other) that can analyse your techniques to see what you are doing that is causing this).

    Just a self check, when you step over something (about knee height) from a standing position. Does the knee of your lead leg (step over leg) kick out to the side instead of staying straight on . If it does it may indicate that your hip flexors are not activating enough and as a result your TFL is working too hard and getting too tight. Hiip flexor activation exercises are indicated here.

    I'm treating a golfer at the moment with a similar condition to yourself. She has weak gluteal muscles and as a result she cannot control her hip swing sufficently. This causes her hip flexor tendon to flick aggressivly over her iliopsoas bursa causing irritation and pain. She has to strengthen her glute muscles.

    I have had hip bursitis since February and would also appreciate some help as I have been to 4 physio's, been on two treatments of anti-inflammatory tablets, had an MRI and a cortisone injection last week. Physios have also treated me for scar tissue off upper gluts, ITB tightness and pirifermous syndrome.

    I am trying to keep stretching throughout the day and have been resting since I got the injury. I went for a 4 mile walk yesterday evening and today my hip feels all tendor and sore all over again.

    I am getting married in October and have never been so unfit! I am at a loss as to what to do now!

    Please also advise....

    Sorry but I had to close this thread.

    It is against the forum charter to seek or for anybody to provide advice which should be provided by a qualified medical professinal.
