Whats UCD'S favourite Christmas Song for 2006

When I woke up this morning, I realised that today is the First Sunday of Advent. That is the real beginning of Christmas for me as there will be a jesse tree at Mass today. The date the shops and the Government put on it is a fraud. Christmas does not start in early November, it starts , on the first Sunday of Advent !!!!!!

However given the day thats in it, im reminded of a ll the wonderful Christmas songs which will be played over the festive season. My personal favourite has to be Wizzard's really corney tune from 1983 "I wish it could be christmas every day". Its such a nostalgic and fun song. While me favourite Christmas Hymn is Hark ! The Hearald Angles Sing", because it aptly describes the birth of the worlds greatest man !!!!

What is your favourite Christmas Song. iT CAN BE A NOVELTY OR A HYMN

I've always had a love for walking in a winter wonderland or White Christmas but tbh I'm already over my christmas carol phase - I start that singing in about may and end it in about June or July - whenever i finish clinical.

    Personal favourites,
    O Holy Night
    Let it snow
    Fairytale of New York

Though xmas for me has nothing to do with religion. It has been a time of celebration in many cultures long before the birth of christ, which may not have been anywhere near December 25th.
I have no chip on my shoulder about the Church celebration of one of their most important days, but I dont like it when ppl complain about secular and non-christians hijacking the holliday. It was actually the other way around.

The commercialisation of xmas, well thats another different debate all together.

Driving home for xmas.....Being on the train down home a couple of days before xmas with this song on the radio has to be the most magic feeling in the world ever.

The Carol of the Bells, originally Ukrainian I believe.

Made famous from THAT scene in Home Alone.
Also doing the rounds at the moment on adverts for M&S or Debenhams or one of those.

Not exactly... a department store in Tokoyo put up a Christmas display but they got it a bit wrong. They had a Santa nailed to a cross.

Well I'm a big Christmas nut I am, love John Lennon's Happy Christmas (War Is Over), but cause of my Christmas nuttage, love Wizzard, original Band Aid, Mariah Carey, Shakin Stevens...

But the winner has to be *drumroll*....

Fairytale of NY, a legend of a song, LEGEND

EDIT: Actually make that joint with The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire...). It's like SUCH a classic

Mariah Carey - All I want for Christmas is you....

Awesome song, any time of year. Also video of her in red suit snow suit, I would wreck that chick.

    Not lets get phished.

Bollox to you all, I've been humming "O Holy Night" for the past few hours now. :(

My flatmates hate you all btw.. I've been giving them performances of MC's 'All I want for Christmas' and Shane McGowans & Kirsty McColls 'Fairytale of New York' for the last few hours. Its still November.

I hate Christmas music. Too many years working retail has turned me to Scrooge, so my favourite Christmas music is any good loud metal used to block out the sounds of Christmas music when I'm on the way out of work.

I love a bit of Cliff I do. How has nobody said till now?

LEGEND. In a Derek Mooney sort of way.

Fun Song - I wish it could be christmas every day. I don't actually want that temporal loop but it's a great song, some very powerful verses

Carol - O Holy Night. I just love the swelling at "fall on your knees". That combined with a childhood of having to do the solos and you've got a mortal lock.

I just wish some new xmas songs would break into habituality. That darkness song last year didn't impress me at all.

I've just been listening to Christmas songs with my flatmates!!!

Love - The Christmas Song, Mistletoe and Wine, Baby it's cold outside, santa baby, all i want for Christmas is you, Wonderful Christmas Time, O Holy Night, White Christmas, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree....oh i just love them all!!!

Fairytale of New York. Beats the pants off any Cliff Richard anyway. ;)

Frankie goes to Hollywood - The Power of Love, always reminds me of Christmas as a kid. Carol of the Bells is a nice alternative for whistling along to. There's too many good songs :)

Try get people to sing complete versions of Christmas songs without it playing in the background, most only know the chorus. We tried to do it on the way to a Christmas party one night but no one could remember the lyrics (could have been the alcohol as well though).

Interesting side note, does anyone remember the Beers in the Porterhouse last April or May? Me, dajaffa, Elmyra, Peacheh and possibly Blush_01 singing Christmas songs? Nostalgia ftw.

Well since it's December on Friday:

I love all the usual cheesy Christmas songs, except Wizzard. I blame Eurospar in Dalkey for that! I also love most Christmas carols. Also, Jump (The Pointer Sisters) now reminds me of Christmas because of Love Actually.

    At this moment, favourites are:
Same Old Lang Syne - Dan Fogelberg
Driving Home for Christmas - Chris Rea (only since I came to Dublin though!)
    O Holy Night
    Oh Come Ye Merry Gentlemen
    White Christmas
    Walking in a Winter Wonderland
    Jingle Bells
All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth
All I Want for Christmas is You
(and of course the aforementioned Jump)

SS, I may have joined in a little, but I was nowhere near as good as you lot. Put me to shame, you all did.

Theres 'Carols by Candlelight' in the church on Wednesday at 7.30pm followed by a reception in the centre club after...just got a lealflet through my door.

ooh, nice songs, some cultish chanting and then alcohol, could be fun. Though if the alcohol came first I'd probably be more up for the cultish chanting:)

Agreed, although Nightwish's cover of We're Walking In The Air is pretty cool, though technically not a christmas song.

Dream Theater's version of "Oh Holy Night" isn't bad :D

I've still managed to avoid hearing any Christmas songs on the TV or radio so far this year. For that I am eternally grateful! I refuse to acknowledge Christmas until at the very least the month of December!

I am however somewhat partial to the songs once I've accepted it's not too early for em! And also when alcohol has been consumed!

Fairytale of New York cant be beat! Except maybe by Do They Know it's Christmas, All I Want for Christmas and that Slade song the name of which escapes me at the moment!

There's no discussion to be had... it's the true national anthem of Fairytale of New York. anyone who has said otherwise should be excommunicated.
