ACL Injury

    Hi Folks,
Hoping for some help here. I'm going in for an operation to repair a torn ACL next Jan.
Has anyone here gone through this and all the rehab ?
I know the rehab is hard but it would be great to hear from someone that has done it.
Did it take long for you to return ?
Is there much I can do before the op to speed up the recovery ?

I am actually thinking of starting a blog about the recovery as I cannot find much info on the whole process except medical websites. What do you think ?

    Thanks.

    Hi bcloh,

Sorry to hear about your injury.

I've had an ACl reconstruction twice.
If your preparing for a Jan op date, its usually sensible to work at maintaining muscle around the joint pre-op.

yeah, sorry to hear about the injury man. literally know how it feels.

I had my reconstructive op about six months ago. are they goin to take the ligament from your hamstring or a different part of your knee? it takes about a month (and i do suggest a month) before you can walk normally without crutches, after that you should just have a slight limp and some odd pains now and again!

you should try to build up muscle mass especially in the injured leg before you go in, your leg will be inactive for a long time so your leg will shrink slightly! after op, KEEP IT ON ICE!! nothing more you can really do! 6 months on my surgeon told me i can start back at rugby and martial arts, so.. it aint that long!

    hope this helps

    hey bcloh
i too am a member of the torn acl club and my oh my isnt it fun. i would suggest that u do all the strengthening exercises that u can do for your leg pre op, my leg was severly wasted down by the time i had the surgery, and i think that affected my recovery time. i had the sugery three years ago and then kinda stopped playing sport, i was and still am kinda afraid of using it too much, but ive made a come back to bball and its feeling pretty good.
but one of my friends had the surgery was up and jogging after two months and at 6 months won the u20 interprovinsial rugby tournament for leinster.
what sport do u play btw?
and the real important bits are gonna be ur build up to surgery and what u do in the first week or so after, in my experience.

Been there too this year, the rehab is tough but if you are committed to it then you'll get through it fine, I was back in full training (football) just short of five months with hard work! and back playing in games at about 5.5 months.

You should get yourself to the gym before the op and try and build up your leg as much as you can.

Also try this site for good info (especially the forums): www.kneeguru.co.uk

    Good luck with the op!

    Cheers for all the replies.
I play hurling and actually tore my ACL 3 - 4 months ago and kept playing on it. 4 Physios, a doctor and a specialist later a scope was recommended to remove some torn cartilage. Not too bad I thought........ Op went well and the surgeon told me afterwards the ACL was torn. The reason that no one could diagnose it was because it had wrapped itself around the PCL and this was providing stability to the leg.
Was damn sore at times if I got the wrong hit on the leg but it would clear up with some physio and off I would go again till the next game.
I am 3 weeks after the cartilage removal so I need to try and get back into the gym and build up the leg, as ye have all recommended. I'm in a catch 22 situation: wait for the pervious op to clear up which will lead me straight into the ACL op with no gym work done, or go to the gym and do as much as I can, with some pain/discomfort !!!!
My thinking is the latter because I cannot do much more damage.... Is this crazy thinking? I know it is, kind of, but I need to do something to build up the leg.

    Cheers all

look man, its not a must do to build up your leg as much as you can before an the op... its just reccommended. If it does cause you pain and discomfort to be in the gym then leave it for the physio after the ACL op! despite what you think you can actually do more damage to it... trust me!!
