is it just me or do companies OTT cash in on james bond flicks? The latest film really takes the biscuit.

Really puts me off the bond series with that ridiculous product placement n stuff.

god the poker scene went on a bit as well done ya think
    this movie really dragged on

Well Sony does own the film studio that makes the bond films (Or it does now)

Since it didn't intrude on the plot in any instance (Sans the omega/Rolex comment, butI acually liked this line).

The World is Not Enough had a gratuitous scene in which bond shaves with his philishave shaver. Not important to the plot or anything, it was blatantly put in there, whereas in Casino Royale everything was integral to the plot (i.e. mobile phones played an important role in the film)

Nobody complains about the Aston Martin product placement

I haven't see Casino Royale yet but product placement doesn't really bother me as long as its not blatant. When done right it can add a bit of realism to a film. I get annoyed when I see a made up brands or fake tv stations in a film. But I don't think filmmakers should accept money for product placement. As I recall, Spielberg didn't take any in Minority Report but just got permission instead. I think Zemeckis did the same on Cast Away.

That might be because Bond needs to drive a cool car, no public transport for that man. The flaunting of SONY products drew the eye to the brand and not the product... he could have done with a nondescript box instead of a laptop.

i saw the film and the sony placement is all fine and dandy but for god sake they don't half make it obivious he's using sony technology.

for example the camera pans up from the keyboard on the laptop stops on the sony logo for like a second then pans to the screen. the same happens with the phone.

there were other product placements around aswell which i didn't mind, smirnoff vodka at the airport, omega watches (gotta love them tbh) and the heineken poster at the airport.

yeh also a lot of people seem to complain about the ford placement. not a lot of people realise ford and aston are owned by the same company.

You'll love the huge, quarter screen Bravia banner ad on the news website so.

It does sound like it's distracting alright. I'm not surprised given that ALL the ads I've seen for Casino Royale have been for products and not the film itself

Does he not also need to have a cool phone, and cool laptops?

Agreed, I think this is ten times more distracting then using real brands.

watched the movie tonight. yes lots of Sony advertising but it didn't take from the film at all. although one person kept saying 'i have that laptop' anytime it appeared on screen

Hmmm, as for product placement and fake brands, seems like this flick has a bit of both:

SONY owns Columbia, the studio that made the film, of course they'll promote their own products shamelessly, why put a Nokia phone or Dell laptop in there instead?!

A few of the websites used and the email program were completely unique and coded especially for the film. I guess they didn't wanna pay/promote the Beeb or Microsoft here....

Anyways, top film, went on a lil too long, but Daniel Craig makes a pretty good Bond ;)

I think the film was brilliant

as for excess ad's promotion etc they needed the film to a sucess but to be honest Daniel Craaig is a brilliant 007 ...very modern IMO which is what these film's need

and OMG the eyes and body < these are the reason's I went to see the film in the firts place but totally loved it!

Slightly off-topic: On the other side of the coin, I like the 'Duff' beer in the Simpsons and fake brands can be used to make points about real brands that would otherwise get your ass sued :)

On-topic: I find product placement distracting when it is in your face. However I never hear too many people moaning about Apple and blatant product placement of their laptops in almost every popular US TV show. Sex and the City was one that stood out a mile, I think Charmed is another.

Is this because Sony are viewed as the BigBadCorporation and Apple, the cool, cute, user-friendly company? After all both companies use proprietry formats to try and force users to stick with their products.

It might also have something to do with the general audience of Bond knowing and caring who Sony are and what they do... CSG's post probably being the proof.

Everyone is a winner were product placement is concerned.

Product placement can be used to cut the costs of props, locations, and set dressing, allowing filmmakers to spend their budget elsewhere. Without product placement, the studio would have to purchase or rent these items. The products used come in all shapes and sizes, from boats, cars, and planes to televisions, watches, and soft drinks.

So trendy companies, like Sony, lend out certain products, and in return they get a whole lot of free advertising, and it would seem that they can also benefit from people discussing their products placement on a forum site such as this one :):p

the worst film i ever was for product placement was "Click"...it was sooo blatant and just as annoying :(

Aside from the gratuitous laptop shots, I didn't notice PP that much tbqh.

Now Blade Trinity had atrocious PP.

A need to listen to an ipod while killing vampires. **** off.

    *Deep booming voice*
SONY: "Exactly, you fools have played right into our trap.
All work for SONY, whether they are aware of it or not."

I never really notice product placement except for TV's abundance of macs.

    Yay, 400th post.

I'm surpised that nobody commented on Virgin, who get three placements including a cameo by Richard Branson.

well no one's mentioning the virgin product placement because at an airport your bound to see a virgin plane and it wasn't in your face, whereas sony was in your face the whole time.

the richard branson cameo well i can't comment on that

In fairness it wasn't overly noticable, maybe apart from the Vaio laptop. The rest of it was acceptable, I've seen far, far worse recently and product placement is not one of the gripes I would have considered among the films other niggling faults and/or problems.

Indeed, it should be james bond not james blond =(

I havent seen it yet but now that I've read this I'll probably notice all the PP if I do see it...

Bleh, every single plot point in that movie involved a mobile phone! It was ****ing irritating. Plus the phone the girl had was a real brick, I can't imagine any girl actually wanting a phone like that. :) It was a decent movie though, it just dragged a lot near the end.

24 takes the biscuit for product placement the dell monitor, laptop, motorola or nokia phones, apple ibook, ford and toyota suv, pioneer plasma. This goes to prove what a great show it is that blatant product placement doesn't detract one bit. James Bond is the 20th century, Jack Bauer is the 21st century.

James Bond vs Jack Bauer anyone?

Everyone owns a Sony phone in the James Bond world... dear god!

Also a lovely shot of the jag at the end, in fact I could barely see anything else in the shot. It looked like a photo campaign for the car.

There were numerous other annoying pp throughout the film. Great film but they should keep the ads to before and after the show.

edit: I don't mind using real gadgets and technology but is there really a need to get a close up of the phones screen and have "SONY ERICSSON" pasted across the top of the cinema screen??? And if it's repeated numerous times throughout the film it gets old very quick. I won't even mention the vaio

BTW the car chase filmed in the Bahamas featured the first sight of the new Ford Mondeo which is not on sale until next March, Product placement indeed!

Not realy what I was expecting this thread to be about....I thought that surely someone would have mentioned the absolutely obscene amount of coverage this film has been getting on the radio....on all the bloody stations.
I started a new job last week that takes me to Dublin at 6am...the whole way down in the car it's Casino Royale this that and the other, then the whole godamn day and on the way home in the evening...if it's not some stupid bint DJ swooning over whoever it is plays Bond, it's some idiot male jock telling us how kewl the gadgets are or some such or how they wrote off X amount of Aston Martins.

Jesus just STFU already and quit hyping it. It's a bloody Bond film...we'll all watch it on telly in Xmas '09.

To go semi-on topic again, product placement is rife in almost every major blockbuster that egts turned out these days...although a fair buit of it is pretty subtle. Hell a lot of the TV series now are doing PP...there's no real harm in it, beats sh*t out of some of the woeful advertising we gte during the breaks...
