I did a search on this, but couldn't really find any threads with what I was looking for.

    Anyway.
I'm a teenage girl (sixteen) and would consider that I have a fairly ok diet. I'm not into sports or any of that type stuff, a friend of mine has been trying to get me into going to the gym but it's just not my thing. I've read a bit about yoga and think it could be for me, but i've a few questions.

How effective is yoga for weight loss? I've put on about a stone in the last year (i'm nine stone currently but i'd like to be around eight and a half). This is mainly because of very little physical exercise i think.

I'm not particularly interested in gaining muscle or anything like that, but i'd like to be more toned. Is yoga effective for this?

Am I even going in the right direction considering yoga? Or is it more geared towards older people?

I have a fairly hectic week, but I really want to try and fit in exercise so I want to make sure i'm going about it the right way.

Any help or comments will be appreciated, thanks. :)

I can't tell you how good it is for weight loss but it's definitely good for relaxation. I think you would need to do quite a lot of it to actually lose weight but it's enjoyable anyway. Can't recommend it enough.

I'm afraid I don't know the name or anything but I read an article a while ago about a far more energetic form of yoga that gets you sweating and would be more of a workout than convential/popular yoga. Don't know anymore than that though so you will have to keep searching I'm afraid. Google is your friend!

From what I remember, Transform is an expert on this and I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong. Astanga yoga is a more energetic form of yoga in so far is you are moving from one posture directly into another. At the same time, it's not equivalent to the same amount of time running for pure caardio exercise. I am a huge fan of yoga for posture, strength, felxibility and "time out" reasons but I suspect the OP might be better looking for something higher intensity for her own particular goals. Never, ever underestimate the value of a good long brisk (really BRISK) walk.

I am a full training kickboxer.

I always break my training on Wednesday mornings to go to a 90 mins yoga class, it is a mix of Hatha and afew other styles.

Though I prefer the gentler stuff, I am more there for the gentle stretch, de-stress and to relax the mind and the breathing exercise. I love it!

If you want to loose a stone, start to get out for an hour brisk walk very day.

Watch what you eat, cut out the crap sweets and 7up. In fact post a thread about how to loose weight and you will get answers from better knowledge people than me.

Yoga IMO is not your No 1 weapon against being fat, but its a great hobby to do!

It's not for loosing weight really. Would be more primarily for relaxation and it's some form of exercise, which is more then what I'm doing currently anyways. XD

But yeah, thanks for the comments!
