Kinda having second thoughts about my Red Steel preorder now...
Nice to know that a freebie game is getting decent scores though:)

Scores seem pretty average for the most part. Doesn't really matter, I won't be able to afford that many games in the near future anyway. :D

All over 70%, ya can't really go wrong with any of them i guess :D

Gah, Twilight Princess was 98% last time I looked. Was hoping it would get #1 or at least #2.

Red Steel is getting an ok ranking, will have to read the review though.

Marvel seems to be doing quite well... that struck me as a game destined to stink for some reason.

New to the Nintendo forum - only recently interested in the Wii. Is there no Super Mario game released yet?

welcome and no, no Mario title at launch; although there is one in the making, likely to be released at some point (hopefully sooner rather than later) next year.

Thanks for the reply! I'm surprised at that. If they released a Super Mario game and the Zelda one they wouldn't have to make much more games for a while IMO!!!!

Well there was no Mario for the GC launch either; I suppose they figure it's better to have your bigger titles spread out rather than launching them all at once... it may also just be that the game wasn't ready in time (although they have technically been working on the new Mario for almost decade at this stage!)

    True...

I've been campaigning for Nintendo for a long while now (well, mainly down to my brother when we were growing up) - always stuck with Nintendo. N64, Gameboys, Gamecube, DS...

Only recently have we swallowed all assumptions that Nintendo kicks Sonys ass, and we got a PS2. But I'm glad they've released something new. I had no idea what the Wii was like but took a look at their website and it certainly is totally different to any console I'e ever seen. The remote like controller will take getting used to but it looks cool.

Explain to me one thing - the Wii points?!!! You can use these to buy actual proper games?! But the points are so cheap to buy so it's just like spending a fiver for a game! (I read somewhere that games start from 500points, and 1 euro will get you around 100 points).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭TheAlmightyArse

The points are for games on the Wii virtual console; basically an online shop from which you can download games onto your Wii. These will mostly be games from old Nintendo consoles, as well as the Mega Drive and TurboGrafx, but there will probably be original small-budget games too. Full list of games at launch is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_virtual_console#Titles

I just completed Marvel on the 360 tonight. Its a great, fun game with lots to do. The wii controls for it look cool and really well implemented. If I didnt have it for the 360 I'd get it with my Wii

Most people thought it was destined to be crap. Xmen/Marvel etc related games in the past have followed a certain trend to be below average. Glad to see this getting good reviews

Just reading some of the gamespot reviews.
    They gave red steel 5.5/10.
    http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/redsteel/review.html
The opening line of the review is:
Red Steel is like a typical PG-13-rated, straight-to-DVD action movie: It can be fun for a while, but it's probably going to leave a bad taste in your mouth.

8.8/10 for zelda although they said the wii control elements seemed tacked on. I was listening to the podcast earlier and they said they would like to get the gamecube version just to play it with a regular controller.
    http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/thelegendofzelda/review.html

I'd like to see a call of duty review. I'm leaning more towards that at the moment instead of red steel.

I would not believe a word on Gamespot they are absalute haters of the nintendo Wii. I have serious doubts about them they even hammered Zelda on their video review. IGN are much better.
But if you want a real proper review rent out games in X-tra Vision or Chart Busters and try it for yourself.
The only problem I have heard across the board of Red Steel was that when you open a door your gun sometimes re-loads. Now I don't know about you but I prefare to have bullets in my gun.

I don't read gamespot, so you might be referencing something I'm unaware of, but you can't say another site is much better because it gives the review you want to see; I think IGN is a generally trustworthy site, but is there any reason other than bad reviews that you think Gamespot is bias against the wii?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 258 ✭✭donkey 2002

It just seems that other reviewers are singing from a different Hym sheet then everyone else. As I said in the previous post. If you want a proper review rent the game out yourself and decide.
I don't like reviewers that just go out to destroy a game and I have been finding this with Game Spot this is just my opinion. I enjoy when people try to find good things as well as the bad. That to me is a fair review.

Gamespot have gone downhill lately. For a console game 8.8 would actually be the highest they would give. If you read the review they say how excellent the game is and only have a few niggles, one being how similar it is to the other 3D zeldas, which is hardly a complaint considering that the precvious zelda games are as close to perfection as you can get.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭wayne040576

    Retr0gamer wrote:

I think that is a valid reason to drop a point. Even if the previous games were good, I'd still expect it to be different considering the amount of time it was in development, otherwise you'd just stagnate the series. There's no point in giving a game a perfect score just because everyone is expecting it. Then there'd be no point in reviewing it. 8.8 is a good score. I can never understand how people get annoyed because that game they've been waiting for doesn't get 9.99999/10.

Gamespot were equally hard on the ps3 this week stating that they'd played the review copy of resistance so they didn't see the need for each of them to get the machine for themselves just yet. Having said that, I don't just read gamespot exclusively and read as many reviews as I can find. At the end of the day I guess it doesn't matter how many reviews you read. It's what you think of the games yourself that counts.
Still not sure about red steel. Think I will do the renting option first. Zelda will be my first game then we shall see what comes next.

The whole thing about the gamespot review is that it's reasons for taking away 12 points are incredibly picky and from the look of 10 or so other reviews most just don't seem to exist,

plus the guy who reviewed it doesn't seem to get that the wii isn't supposed to be played like a standerd gaming system, watch him playing wii sports golf in their videos, he spends the whole time sitting down and then complains that it isn't like real golf...

This is a problem I had always thought would arise with the wii, it's aimed at a whole new type of player and the age old gamers are just going to have accept that

    Just a few from IGN....

    Madden 8.5
Madden 07 offers a faster and more brutal game of football, and the added motion control makes pulling off complex football maneuvers easier than it’s ever been. The game is constantly offering pointers to newcomers as well, whether it’s in the on-the-fly tutorials accessible at any time during a game, or in the success/failure prompts that tell you instantly if your motion was too early, too late, or dead on. Madden 07 leaves definite room for improvement, but it’s a tremendous leap in the right direction. If Madden 07 is any indication expect EA and Nintendo to become very, very good friends this generation.

    Call of Duty 7.7
Call of Duty 3 for Wii is a bit of a mixed bag. For starters, the game’s control is pretty solid, and while there are a few issues with the battle actions, the pin-point aiming and Call of Duty driving feels great, adding a ton of immersion in to the game. If the gameplay isn’t your primary focus for FPS games though, Call of Duty 3 may be a bit of a downer, as there’s no multiplayer, and the visuals are pretty weak. If you’re expecting anything more than a solid single player adventure and GCN/Xbox graphics, you may be disappointed. Still, Call of Duty 3’s control is definitely something to experience, and seems to be second only to Metroid. If you’re looking to try the FPS genre on Wii during launch, Call of Duty 3 is the game to show the system off.

    Excite Truck 8.0
I'm more of a Burnout and San Francisco Rush fan than a Gran Turismo and Forza gamer, and Excite Truck for Wii is definitely right up my alley. Excite Truck is clearly a first generation console game that will, without a doubt be outdone in the Wii system's later years. But as a game that bursts right out of the gate as a launch title for the system, Excite Truck is a fulfilling, fun, energetic arcade-style racer that features a good balance of technology and technique. There are a few spots in places that could have been filled, like its weak two player option and trick system, but overall this game definitely pulls off the intense racing rush that quality arcade racers offer.
    RayMan 8.3

Don't forget 9.5 on IGN for Zelda. Thats a staggering score....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

CVG and Gamespots reviews seem very odd, the gamespot one seems to start with the flaws and work backwards and the other starts with the good and moves to the flaws.

From readin both it seems GS has an ulterior motive, the fact EA games owns the site and red Steel is a an Ubi game (EA own 10% of ubi irc)

CVG usually sits on the fence but Ubi games always get high scores from them.

IGN generally are nintendo fanboys so the high score there maybe partly because of that.

EG would be the one to read whenever it appears.

gamespot are teh ones who screwed up twilight princess' average. they said it was the best zelda yet and they only gave it 8.8 or somethin.

everyone is complainging about the graphics but what do they expect? its a gamecube game.

Ok, Red Steel is back on my list of games to get along with Zelda.

    CVG.com wrote:
    Score: 8.0
There's no doubt that Red Steel is worth the purchase when you grab your Wii. It's a superb shooter with a great plot, innovative gameplay and some really brilliant moments that will surprise even the most seasoned of gamer. It's a decent length too, with a good 15 hours of play in the main mode.

But some control issues and patchy inconsistencies (mainly in the physics and level design) pull it short of earning that juicy 9 score. Still, of the 27 Wii games that will launch in December, Red Steel is certainly one of the best.

I'm waiting for the Edge reviews tbh...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Edge is good, as is CVG and IGN in my opinion. I think IGN gets accused of fanboy-ism for EVERY console it covers, simply because they're split into different channels, but from what I read, they aren't afraid to criticise either though, and will give a fair score based on how much they genuinely liked it.

And CVG gave Twilight Princess 10/10 :o

The main problem with the reviews is most people only look at the numbers which don't actually represent anything other than a general indication of if a game is good or not. If a game can't get over 5 then you should probably avoid it but more than that and most games have at least some redeeming features and some fun to them on the majority of sites.

Gamespot have been accused of giving 360 games higher reviews than they deserved over the other systems but I don't know about that.

I do know the Zelda review seemed weird. Seemed like the guy just said I don't like this, this and that about Wii so I'm reducing the score of Zelda because of that (speaker in Wiimote being of poor quality being an example). Generally when reviewing, you'd review compared to other games on the platform (assuming all games aren't completely crap). This is why most systems launch games reviews are reasonable even though a lot of the games are crap at launch and show up as being crap later on in the consoles life. Thats why I think the Zelda review seemed harsh from Gamespot but then again I've never played a Zelda game before so what do I know :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭steviec

I thought the Zelda review seemed fair. He mentioned how the gameplay basically hasn't moved forward in 10 years and that fighting consists of shaking your wiimote randomly till the enemies are dead, rather than any skill.

That's without taking account of graphics or whatever, an 8.8 seems reasonable. It's not exactly a bad score...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 121 ✭✭Pablo-El-Vagabu

The reviewer of Zelda for GS definitely has a problem with the Wii. Which is fine, however he is not reviewing the games fairly, look at some of his other reviews for the Wii and then for games of other systems he has reviews for (like GOW for 360).

You can tell from the vids that he hates the machine. Defo bias.

Still the avg of zelda will recover from the GS review once more pour in.

I prefer to look at the averages as it tends of filter out bad/biased reviews. Anything over 90% I think is a must buy. 80+% and it is a maybe. If I had more money I might consider the 70s+

So for launch at the moment I have:

    Must Buy:

    Legend of Zelda WII 96.8%

    Strong Maybes:

DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 WII 86.1%
    Marvel Ultimate Alliance WII 82.2%
Call of Duty 3 WII 81.6%
    Trauma Center WII 81.0%

Other possibles(once all the reviews are in):
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam WII 79.8%
    Rayman Raving Rabbids WII 79.5%
    Red Steel
    Far Cry

Gamespot is obviously a nintendo hater.........they nearly give everything a low points.......

p/s:there was a riot in the gamespot forum when they gave that zelda's 8.8......and when gamespot showed at the wii launch, before they said something out, people asked them: 'why the hell are you giving zelda a 8.8?'.....haha:D

Square enix are busy destroying the FF franchise and shaping it into something completely unrecognisable. The best we can hope for is some Dragon Quest or Nintendo getting Camelot (Shining Force 1+2, Golden Sun) to make a good RPG. I'd rather a Tales of game than FF.

Looks like if you want a good FF type RPG the console to own is the 360. Enchant arms is supposedly rather good and Blue Dragon and lost odyessy are supposedly something special.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

I think Chrystal Chronicles has a lot more promise this time round, as it could connect to the DS easily, and you could play over the net, so your team of 4 (or 2, or 3) could be formed from people anywhere, and you don't have to have one person left stupidly carrying the crystal.

Retr0, you're forgetting that FF games were becoming boring & stagnant -- let Squenix reshape them into something more fun! ;)

Don't agree. FFX was one of the best games i've ever played but then they fire Nobuo Uematsu, make FF a franchise, release crap spin offs like FF tactics advance, FFX-2 and Advent Children and then decide to make FFXII a completely different game, modelling it after Vagrant Story rather than FF. Although its an okay game it's not a patch on FF games of old. I enjoyed Dragon Quest VIII with it's archaic mechanics more than the new FF stuff.

It is a bad score as what people who play Zelda want is gaming perfection, a full 50 hours of varying engrossing gameplay. Zelda is a Grade A top title and they get 90% minimum if good. Zelda getting 97% ie best game ever made type scores. Gamerankings altho kinda fair , you cant really argue the all platform top 10, i mean thats the 10 best games ever. People who agree OOT is number one want TP to be either 2 or 1.

Nope. It is battalion wars 2. Battalion wars 1 was rather good for the GC but needed a little bit of polish. Hopefully the Wii game is the game that BW1 should have been (multiplayer would be excellent).

Would like an online advance wars but it's probably better suited to DS.

Fire Emblem on Wii is coming out soon in Japan. Hopefully we will see it here shortly. I adore Fire Emblem.

regarding gamespots review of Zelda.... they gave it 8.8 while they gave wind waker 9.3. now I havnt played twilight princess but from everything i have read it is possibly the best zelda around.... I dont get why they would score a game lower if it is bigger, more challenging and better value for money than another game.
