My mother has been going to curves gym for last 2 years and after a few months has'nt seen any further improvement but keeps going as it makes her feel better and she meets friends etc. Now she is considering joining another gym as i have pointed out the flaws with curves (no eccentric component, little core work, no increase in resistance etc) . Is there any gyms on northside near Dublin 9 that would be suitable for a 55 YO woman who knows nothing about training? Somewhere with good patient instructors that will show her how to train with free weights and do core work.

    Cheers

Hi, rugbug is right DCU is a good gym for older people however it is far too expensive for my liking. The new Ben Dunne Gym (Northwood) in santry is excellent, I have been a mamber there for just under a year now. It is split into two floors with the heavy weights upsatirsand most of the cardio/machine weights downstairs. All the equipment is first class and there are more than enough proper fitness instructors to show how to use the equipment and get the best results from them.

It is also nearly 200 euro cheaper than DCU at the moment (Think 375 for the year) and it blows it out of the water!

    Hope this helps!

Your mum is getting exercise, she has made friends and is clearly enjoying herself, get off her back and let her live her own life:mad:

She WANTS to go to a better facility just does'nt know much about training/locations. Its very important for women of that age to train properly. She has been told by doc to increase exercise/lose weight.

I don't know the DCU gym at all but I would be wary of recommending an university gym your mum. I work in trinity and I'm only early 30's but I find it intimidating with all the skinny 18 year olds in the gym there. It's just a thought.
