Okay, I'm just getting back into weight training and I want to start taking protein supplements. Which one should I get. I've heard whey protein is easier to digest and has a slightly higher protein ratio but some people swear by casein too. Any suggestions? Also, if you order from the states do you shafted on taxes ?

I use whey myself and in particular EAS 100% whey. Depends on your body though. You may find that eas does nothing for you and nutrition x works wonders and vice versa. Trial and error. Give one a bash, if it works well stick with it.

Price wise there are plenty of places over here where you can get it for similar price to the us so unless you want to wait weeks in order to say a fiver then well and good.

    Pro-X without doubt

    Jon,

Could you tell me the types of protein you do at your store and their sizes and prices. Also a nutrional breakdown.

I currently take the Maximuscle Promax but Ive basically been told I'm getting ripped off price wise but I would like to take something nutrionally similar to this.

    Regards

Possibly, but postage is the real killer. Cheapest I have ever seen by a good bit is www.bulkpowders.co.uk the shipping stays the same up to about 25kg once past a certain level. Something like £11, and it is couriered in a few days.

you are getting shafted, you're paying for marketing. Pro-X, EAS, ON, Nutrisport... any of the big brands all have very similar nutritional values at much lower prices and without the crap. At minumum look for a 25g protein in a 30g serving and go for one you like the taste of.

OP- for postworkout you want quickly absorbed whey, for before bed you want slow-release casein (whey and casein are jsut two slightly different protein types). Buy the whey and you can get the casein from milk/ cottae cheese if you don't want to fork out for a supp. But a whey shake is the easiest and most convenient way to get aa's into your body straight after working out.

My main problem with Maximuscle is that there "Promax" Protein has, according to them, a bioavailability rating of 150%. I am unsure as to how exactly this is possible, as it implies that you absorb more protein than you actually ingest but hey, who am I to argue with their marketing department!!! I am but one man.

The top three protein supplements that I always recommned are 1) Nutrition X 2)Optimum Nutrition and 3) Reflex. All these guys actually produce there own whey…..unlike 98% of other companies who will simply contract buy the whey ( normally from the parent companies of the three named above or one of the other 3 dairies in the world who produce whey protein as a business ). The simple fact is that the above can offer a better product for a better price. I have used them all and have been very happy with them, although I think everyone knows that while they continue to make excellent products Nutrition X will always have my support.

As already said, EAS and Nutrisport also do good stuff and a simple look at the amino acid profile of any of them will tell you if a product is good or not.

Dragan, as far as I know the BV is calculated/obtained by using egg protein as the gold standard i.e it's BV is 100%, so what their saying is promax has a BV 1.5 times better or more available than egg protein.

I think most or all whey protein has a BV over 100%

I am however open to correction on this

The BV (Biological value of a food) is a measure of how well the body can absorb and utilise a protein. An egg scores 100, whey around 104. Dragan I'm not sure hwere your 'bioavailability' comes from??? I'm presuming you meant BV.

So as the BV isn't actually a % scale, more a rating, it's entirely possible for supplements to have higher BV's than eggs (besides which that scale is entirely relevant and reliant on other factors that will influence nitrogen balance in the body such as frequency of protein ingestion, current nutritional status etc etc) but to have them 50% above and beyond eggs is highly unlikely, unless a particular test study was done adminsitering the Promax under optimal conditions allowing the subject to absorb ridiculous amounts of protein. Having taken a quick look at Promax on their website, there's really nothing special about it at all, and in fact seems to deliver less protein per serving than other cheaper high quality wheys. So the moral of the story is... Maximuscle = overmarketed, overpriced hype.

Dammit... evey so often the nerdling in me just screams to be let out...

"bioavailability" is an old joke because it used to be written on the side of ProMax tubs. :)

Ok so I am looking to lose body fat and build muscle. Promax seemed to be the closest Maximuscle product for this criteria. Which one of these products fits the bill?

Thanks for all the info so far :)

Well my choice would be Pro-X. I have used it for a long time now and get great results on it. Apart from that the prices are unbeatable, which is just as important as their nutritional breakdown :D

Thanks for all the info guys, I bought a small 2kg tub of 90% casein just to tide me over, also found a place that'll give me 10lb of optimum 100% gold st for €75 so I might give that a go if I can't find anything better. Will check out all the sites first though

2 weeks??? you'll be lucky....it's be more like 25 days and wait till the DHL office cannot release it cos the customs doctor has not inspected it yet and he is not due for a week...lol

Are you sure of that price and your doller - euro rate cos last time I ordered their shipping was a lot dearer0-

that said they are dirt cheaper and great price for smaller stuff that doesn't weigh 5kg

i'd go with easygainer tbh, same price if your calculations are right and it won't take 2weeks to get!
