After spending a very wet & windy yet massively enjoyable day on Inisbofin on Sunday I got to thinking... what's to stop a group of likeminded folks heading out there for a long weekend of snapping, drinking and perhaps a little bit of running around the fields at 4am, naked as the day you were born.

Perhaps more of the first one, slightly less of the second and alot less of the third. I'd like to gauge interest in 'a trip to the island' next June. That gives people plenty of time to mull it over and then finally give into temptation and agree.

So, June 2007. Possibly rent a house (or houses) for a long weekend and explore every corner of a nominated island. At the moment, I'd count any one of the Aran Islands, Valentia or Inisbofin as places people can get to without huge amounts of travelling. That is of course Valentia island, unless anyone wants to spend the weekend exploring Valentia the boards user.

So people, names and locations is the name of the game. If you're interested say so and I'll compile a list so I can take it from there. Also, if you're biased toward any of the islands, do state your case.

Also, if the crossing to the island we had on Sunday was as rough as it normally is, sufferers of seasickness need not apply :D

Count me in, provisionally mind. June is a long way off a lot may happen in the mean time.
I was talking to a buddy who did a walking trip of Inis Boffin, Inis Clare and Inis Turk, he said it was the best holiday he ever had. Should be class!
    Cheers.

It's all provisional at the moment, which is why I'm posting so soon for an event more than 6 months away. I dont think anyone (with the exception of the morbidly organised) will know what theyre doing in June 07 just yet :D

CrowdedHouse; it aint a secret no more. I'm definately goin back there for a weekend next summer anyway!

Jaysus ... a weekend on an island full of culchies with a bunch of cameras and some beverages ... sounds great to me ... I like wildlife shoots ;) ...

    ... I'm (provisionally) interested too ...

jaysus yeah, it's not like I'd be carrying my own bag...

on a related note, those computrekker plus backpacks are unimaginably comfortable... bought one in Galway on the Friday night before heading up to Clifden.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

    Really???

    I find mine quite nice?

Maybe it's my bigger build... *cough*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

that's what I was getting at... it's unimaginably comfortable compared to my previous smaller backpack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Ah, but your last one was tiny.

    Mine fits a medium format, 2 SLR's, 7 lenses, 35mm film, 120mm film, bean bag, mini tripod...filters, notebooks...AND a laptop!

Anything totally comfortable that carrys that much usually has 4 wheels and a roof!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

indeed... now all I have to worry about is taking it onto a plane as hand luggage :D

Would love it, I'd also love to get to Rathlin Island, and I'll also definitely be heading out to the Saltees for the birdies next Summer. I tried getting there 5 weeks this year but the weather was too bad :(

tis... about half an hour off the coast of Cleggan

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 710 ✭✭✭Dundhoone

I've always ment to head out there for a weekend.
Im sure I know a few other nice spots around there if we wanted to snap around on the way out or the way back!

I'm liking your idea very much.

Could be tricky to organise accomodation in advance, its a very popular spot!

What date in June, how about the bank holiday? Providing I'm still in a job I'll need to book it off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭jlang

I don't even know what country I'll be in in June, but if I'm around, I'd like to join in.

Friday 1st through to Monday 4th of June is the Bank Holiday weekend, how about setting the date at that? At least you get Mon to recover/travel.
Now all we need is an extremely long range weather forecast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭leinsterman

I'm in but I'd prefer a May weekend ... could be travelling in Darkest Africa during June...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 710 ✭✭✭Dundhoone

ooooh darkest africa, whos up for that?!!!?

Boards meet in the Congo, by the third tree under the small mountain to the left of the fourth small village after the savanna.:)

Jazus these stickies. I keep missing them. Keep thinking MCD have taken them over and I just ignore them :(

Stick me down for two places. I need a hod carrier too. Sorry Phil, only joking! Two things: Anywhere but Valentia, I'll be there in July and NOT the bank holiday weekend. I dont think I could survive walking over Miller bottles and comatosed Dubs. May might even be better. We always get a few fine weeks in May, pisses again until mid July and a final week of Summer in August.

PS Maybe Fajitas, Rymus, Morlar and meself can have a book signing. A western launch or something like that? ;-)

Ok, i think it's just the right time to actually book a house on an island, if there's too many going, i've no bother camping out in my tent (it's more fun)
I'm not volunteering, but who's taking charge of organising this?

Ryan has to take charge, but I'll give in a hand too if he needs it, once I know what the dates are!

    Inishbofin? looks nice to me.

Has anything been decided as June for me other than the 24th for Galway Airshow is clear (makes a change). Cant rely on it being like that for too long?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

It looks like Inis Bofin is fairly well populated, would it be a better bet to try somewhere with no one on it?
