Anyone know of any decent gyms around Smithfield?

I tried the Golden Pages for Dublin 1/7, didn't come across any

    Power house on Domnic street.

Hercules Gym just off North King Street beside Mays fruit shop.

    Phibsboro gym

    Olympus Capel Street

Cuts smithfield (if thats your thing)

    Hope this helps

Cheers Jon, that definitely helps alright!

I used to be a member of Olympus, that would be near enough, haven't been in a couple of years but last time I was there the equipment wasn't great - it was originally a boxing gym but they took down the ring to make way for the spinning bikes, such a shame.

Hercules would be near as well so I'll check that out.

    What's Cuts in Smithfield about?

Does anybody know if Power house on Domnic street has a website?

My gym membership is up in the NAC so i thought i would try for a gym nearer work this time around (work in the city).. Id rather go to a gym that just does what it says on the tin.. weights, benches, a squat machine (or 3) and no fancy stuff. I want to bulk up and i think working out in a gym like Power House would be a good place to do it. Anybody here go to Power House?? Is it like Hercules where you need to know a member before you can join?

LOL power house with a web site! No mate definately not. Yeh I train in Power house when I cant get up to total. Just talk to Mick on the desk and tell him the boys in Pro-Nutrition sent you down. Now don't expect glamour..cos you won't get it! You wil come across some big dudes down there, ally and Tom Staunton train down there and are very helpful as most of the guys are.

    HAHAHAHAHA!

I'm not being a bugger, one trip there and you'll see what i found to be so funny.

Anyway, this gym is great for all the stuff you mentioned an intrest in. Old school, hardcore weights and routines. Plenty of champions over the years have passed through there. Lots of very knowledgable guys up there.
Hercules is equally brilliant for the same stuff, although no lifting downstairs after seven o clock so upstairs can get quite crowded. And there's olympic wrestling there twice a week, for FREE! Great fun and excellent cardio.

Jon and Hammerheadgym... thanks for the replies.. I was pretty sure that Powerhouse wouldnt have a website but just thought i would ask..

I will head up there tomorrow so and have with a chat with that guy Mick.

I havnt been to the gym in a month now (membership ended and working pretty long hours) so I want to get back into it asap.. Hoping this time around to maybe get a training partner. I dont mind training on my own (did that in the NAC for the guts of a year) but sometimes you need that extra push to get a couple more reps in and also if you know you are meeting somebody in the gym at least you cant start making excuses about not going.

I trained in Hercules gym years ago for about 8 months.. It was a great spot.. I heard now though that you when you join you have to know somebody who already trains there.

Anyway thanks again for the replies.

Hey Jon, thought I'd drag up this thread again, have just changed jobs today so am still looking for a new gym in the Smithfield area. Was up at Olympus there at lunchtime, but they don't open till 10.

Thing is, I cycle in, so want to use the gym facilities before work to have a shower - there's no shower in the new place :(

What time does Power House open at? and what are the fees?

If anyone else has another option, i.e. a gym in the Smithfield area that's open early in the morning, please feel free to let me know, cheers

    Hi Mate,
Got your PM. Unfortunately PH doesn't open until 11am. You could try Hercs just off North King Street. I'll try find out the opening times for you.

Cheers for that Jon - was up around North King St today looking for Hercules - found May's fruit shop but didn't see any sign of a gym?

Looks like I may have to think about joining somewhere like 'Cuts' just to use their effing shower!!!

Its hard to find, but you're rigth beside it at Mays fruit shop. At the side of Mays follow the road up and Hercs is on the right, its hidden among the houses which can make parking a nightmareif your driving.

I remember I joined that gym back when I was 19 and was there for about 3 years. Yeah some of the equipment was a bit old and dodgey but it served its purpose. They have now done away with the boxing ring to make way for a ladies changing room :( Haven't been there in a while but they were getting in all new spin bikes before I left. The owner/manager or whatever Jack is alright, he had a bit of a hard time teaching me the art of a sit-up but it was all in the name of the job.

They have the typical stuff, machines for thighs/calves. Cardio, small small weights room so its uncomfortable to be in there when theres more than 3 or 4 people. Theres a steam room, kind of outdated the last time I was there.

The only thing was, the crowd that was attracted to this gym. The big hercules type guys who like to look in the mirror and stare at everyone else to see if they are drawing enough attention to themselves. Thats the pet peeve of the gym, and the reason I left was because some bloke kept staring at me when I was there and always came to the gym the same time as me.

Its an okay gym, but I find the better equipped gyms better for weight loss.

Has no one mentioned 1Escape yet ( http://www.oneescape.ie/index.html )? I workout there. They open at 6:30 am on weekdays. They definitely have showers ... and pool, and sauna, and steam room.

And, oh yes, weightlifting area, cardio area, etc.

In any case, if you are looking for a hard-core testosterone, weight-lifting gym, this may not be for you. But the good thing is that it is not crowded at all in the morning. I go there around 6:45 and it's usually me and 2 other guys using the weight room.

i can read thanks mate - the gym opened for use in dec '06 (was delayed a bit as was due to open in nov '06) - there was a massive sign outside it for months and they started taking memberships in the autumn - the poster who mentioned the gym looked like he was just being helpful mentioning a gym in smithfield in a thread that had recently been brought back to life - take a chill pill!
