Too early for best of lists in my opinion. There's still the rest of November and the odd release in December that isn't a greatest hits made for the christmas market.

there are rarely any noncompilation albums released in Nov/Dec

and Uncut would have the major ones

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,700 ✭✭✭bogmanfan

I really enjoyed Yo La Tengo, The Pipettes, the Jim O'Rourke album on Headz, Amusement Parks on Fire, and Broken Social Scene.
Best gigs were Boredoms, BSS in TBMC, Pipettes and Music for 18 Musicians at NCH.

It's good to see Mastodon getting in there. Yeah no Tool - 10,000 days, that should really be in there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

Not all that many albums that consistantly impressed me.

    The Decemberists - 'Crane Wife'
    Menomena - 'Friend and Foe'
...Trail of Dead - 'So Divided'
    Sufjan Stevens - 'The Avalanche'
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - 'The Letting Go'

Most of those are from the last third of the year, which means I've a very bad memory or nothing from before that stuck in my head :/

    more or less...

I think it's been a crap year for albums...can't ever remember a worse one. It says it all when dylan's latest gets #1. Of all I've heard this year I doubt there'll be many of them I'll still be listening to in 5 years time. (maybe the seeger sessions and that's a covers album!)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,425 ✭✭✭indiewindy

Yes I have to agree, This has been a pretty poor year.Next year should get off to a cracking start with explosions in the sky and the shins releasing new cds
My top cds of this year are

    My latest novel: Wolves
    Mono: you are there
    Mogwai: Mr Beast.
James Yorkston: Year of the leopard
I like trains : progress reform
sparklehorse: Dreamt fro light years in the belly of a mountain

Gig wise seeing the evens playing in a school hall in Dublin was the highlight for me.

Hey, in case you didn't see the thread, I'm compiling an official top ten for this forum and with any luck you can win a prize for submitting your top 3 records of the year (and personally I thought, much like every year, that it was a great year for records once you go out to look for them and don't rely on the likes of Uncut).

Link to the Alt/Indie Album of the Year thread

Best to steer clear of gigs as someone is bound to mention an MCD gig at some stage.
