New Look RTÉ ONE

RTÉ ONE launched it's new look on Friday and not only that, but they seem to have finally sorted out the problem with their DOG, but they seem now to have moed them to the right of the screen instead of the left! Currently, a 16:9 film is being shown with the DOG not in the 16:9 position, but rather on the far right of the screen, so if the digibox is set to 4:3 all you see is "RTÉ".

What prompted them to move the DOGs to the other side of the screen? It's distracting in a whole new way now! They should have fixed it's look and left it where it was, or maybe moved it a bit more up towards the top and towards the edge of the screen!

I'd assume it's their inability to use multi-positional DOGs, at least with its new position, it's not constantly in the middle of the picture even during 4:3 shows. It's a unique solution anyway.

Is the flag about audience rating still appearing at the start of programmes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 828 ✭✭✭Round Cable

Yes it's under the RTÉ part and so visible to all viewers.

We don't need DOGs at all. Maybe someday the "branding" creators will all be fired and the money spent on content.

Just saw those new idents, they're aweful. I've never seen anything so bland.

They look identical to the previous ones apart from there being no morphing form old to new in it. Same stupid 'lifestyle' crap shoing 'real' people doing 'real' things. Boring.

what genius thought moving the DOG from one corner to another would be a great thing. why not get rid of the ****ing thing altogether

At least the DOG isn't half way across the screen during 4:3 programmes now...

But I can almost bet that the reason why the DOG was moved was so they could have it AND the scoreboard on screen during sporting events so you wouldn't be forgetting what channel you are watching and have to pick up your remote a press a button to find out, God forbid. How lucky we are to have channels like this that look after us so well...

The RTE dog's dissappear during The News still so I cann't see that changing with Sports.

After all you are watching RTE NEWS RTE SPORT RTE ARTS RTE BRANDING RTE MARKETING RTE IN YOUR FACE RTE ALL OVER THE ****ING PLACE

I saw the RTÉ TWO DOG on-screen during a football match yesterday so you're right. Thats the only reason they moved the DOG. It does look a bit daft though having 2 RTÉ logos on-screen simultaneously. Hopefully they'll get rid of the RTÉ in the score display leaving just the 1 RTÉ logo on the right hand side of the screen.

No No No Phen! It's just not enough RTÉ. The RTÉ brand can only survive if they have numerous idents on screen at the one time and rename every show by sticking rte in front of their names.

Look at it this way RTÉ as a Public Service Broadcaster should provide branding that denotes what they do: -

RTÉ: Show Me The Money (i.e. you pay for a brand)
RTÉ: Off the Rails (i.e. nothing original just irish verision of some **** the BBC are doing)
RTÉ: LOST (i.e. lost up our own arses)

No dogs during Adverts. Do you think as paying customers also we can demand removal?

A standard reply from RTE will now follow:-

As Ireland's national public service broadcaster we cannot allow the public service broadcasting image of RTE to be tained by commericalism, it would therefore be unwise of use to allow the use of DOGs/BUGs during advertisements.

The advertiserers don't allow it and hve more clout than licernce payers.

    RTE Rebut

RTE have not been contacted by advertiser in relation to the use of DOGs/BUGs during commercial breaks. You will notice that other TV channel such as MTV and Living have their DOGs/BUGs on during the add breaks.

Elmo is not affliated with RTE, however elmo (speaking in the 3rd person) is now planning to send an email to RTE asking them why dogs are not put on during adds.

    The email follows:-

    Dear Sir/Madame

I think that the DOGs/BUGs on RTE are really very good, and I am impressed by RTEs use of them, however I do find it annoying that the DOGs/BUGs are not present on the screen during commerical breaks sure'll it would be benifical to everyone that the DOGs/BUGs are available during commerical breaks.

    your etc

    :)

    LOL, ROFL, etc :)

yes. maybe we should mount a campain. We want to be sure which channels adverts are effective.

I don't watch MTV, or Living. Occasionally MTV Germany.

The germans put Werbung on most channels so you know it is an advert and not a real program.

Thank you for your email regarding the use of the RTÉ Bug. I have checked with the relevant people in Television and key reason the RTÉ bug does not appear during the ad breaks are that the advertisers do not want the RTÉ logo to appear on screen during this advert. For example, if Sky were running an advert, they would not want the RTÉ logo appearing on screen at the same time.

Thank you for taking the time to email your query into us.

    Kind regards,

    Claire Martin

Well why are rte advertising sky surely that doesn't make any sence.

Why not? As long as Sky pay for the advertising, I see no problem with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Well if thats the case then RTE should start advertising on Sky One and Sky News, and TV3 should broadcast adds for RTE Television etc etc. I just think that competitors shouldn't advertise each other since it rarely happens with other TV services.

Fair enough RTE are now advertising RTE 2FM and The RTE Guide on TV3 and other channels.

Anyway I respond with more of a point.

Why not let people know that they are watching an ad for Sky on RTE by keeping the dog on screen during ad breaks. Surely people would get confused and start to think that they are watching Sky :)

Sorry its not much of a point, but then the Dogs don't have much of a point.

The matter is made a bit fuzzy be the fact that Sky is not just a collection of channels, but a platform which also broadcasts RTÉ.

RTE is also a platform not just a collection of channels. :)

Surely RTE NL should also advertise on Sky :)

RTENL carry TV3 and TG4 (which is meant to be separate from RTE)

Hence RTENL being a platform in the same way that Sky is a platform.

Sky have subscriptions and hardware to sell. RTÉNL don't. So Sky have more of a reason to advertise all over the place. Is there anything stopping RTÉ advertising on Sky if they want?

Shouldn't think so. They advertise in the Sky magazine the whole time. Which I don't actually read, by the way  . Even if Sky didn't want to take the ads, they could bypass them and advertise on Living, Paramount, Nickelodeon et al who have Irish opt outs.

It's not really the point lads. The point is RTE are afraid to upset sky by putting an RTE ONE or RTE TWO logo on screen during a sky add break on RTE.

And as you all so logically point out RTE are not in the same business as Sky so why should sky have an issue with an RTE LOGO on screen during their add breaks :)

 Sky is nothing to do with it.

No channel with DOGs leaves them on during ad breaks.

RTE regard Sky as just another Cable channel.

All of the Discovery Channels do it, MTV has always done it and living do it.

Again we are point out the fact that RTE don't put their one on during the adds but do during programming and the question asked is why? and the answer is of course "advertisers don't want it".

The lady to replied to my email was giving me an example of an advertiser with RTE who are in a similar type of industry i.e. TV and she gave Sky as the example, she could have said NTL or Chorus.

Perhaps I have take the example to far and blamed Sky for RTE's policy.

I should have stated it was all advertise who really don't want to be associated with the RTE branding machine which is now in overload.
