Technical question! Why do gaskets have that little semi-circle tab?

Ya see that little semi-circle bits, why do so many valve gaskets feature this design? It always seems to be the weak point for an oil seep.

To place or remove gasket ?

Maybe some sort of "key" so that the gasket cannot be installed back to front or upside down!

If you look again you will see that these semi-circular bit of rubber are usually in line wth the camshafts. When the cam seats are machined in the casing this little cutout is necessary to allow clearance for the boring machine.

    Hope that answers your question.
