my most reliable is an opponent who starts talking fast when you're pondering a call - MONSTER!!!!

I can't the humourous part of the above post :(

Here's a tell for you. When Harold bets he isn't bluffing. Here is another one. When Norman loses a big pot he will put all his chips in the next hand regardless.

When Alex (elderly gentleman) in the Fitzwilliam does his Skippy impersonation when he has flopped a monster

    no humour intended

I was simply looking for info so I can beat you all at the Boards game and expected you to provide same....

Which boards player is this then?

When he gets a nice pocket holding he bites down on his back teeth, puts on a kind of an upside down smile (think its called a frown), leaves his two arms prostrate on the felt - one eiter side of his chips - and stares blankly at the centre of the table and ceases breathing.

    answers on a postcard please?

    I'm just guessing here (with a 99.99% probability)...Rounders?

you forgot the rubbing of the forehead and the 2 minute dwell-up!!

Someone that reaches for their chips then checks = really weak.

    I always LOL at that

i often ask opponents how much they have left for two reasons:
to see if i have any bluff equity and size my bets correctly.
to see if they are committed yet or basically size my value bet correctly.
so i ask when im bluffing and when i am value betting.only if i cant see though.

I generally ask that when I have a monster and someone else is betting into me.

bring a few packs of chewing gum and constantly offer them to the table. If they stop chewing after a big bet, theyre more than likely bluffing. The opposite holds true for monsters

Don't do this. There are way too many people that play poker that are incapable of chewing gum with their mouth closed.

If I bet big and you have a really weak holding this is how you know I am bluffing and you should call to impress all your mates by calling and winning with 8 high.

Harrington recommends focussing on an opponents hands to gain tells as it's much harder to put out false info with your hands...can't say it's ever done much for me

Nor has it ever worked for me.

Can I highjack this thread a bit and ask whats the best call you have ever made based on a tell"

Fitz scalps, some time back, this guy (brother of prominent boards player ;) ) check raised BigD all in preflop. As BigD was thinking about the bet this guy was tapping his index finger repeatedly on the table. BigD called and was shown AA.

Bout one hour later I raised in late positon with 44 (shortish stacked) and he calls. Flop K93. He goes all in and I think about it and notice no finger tapping. I go on my instinct and win against his bluff.

I won't mention the thousands of times when I've read the tells wrong.

I remember one time I raised pf in a tournament, a guy folded, got out of his chair and walked around to my side of the table and picked up my hand, I was thinking wtf??

He said he wanted to check my pulse :)

I think this would be a slightly labour intensive way to get live tells, but if it works...

have is hand folded cuz he left his seat

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,859 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

Personally I can say honestly that it is unusual for me to get a physical tell per se on someone.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,720 ✭✭✭El Stuntman

feigning disinterest in the hand (looking at the tv, waving a waitress over, fiddling with a ipod etc) is also usually a danger sign

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,894 ✭✭✭✭phantom_lord

He'd already folded, it was more a joke than anything else.

I don't ever remember anything as specfic as someone tapping their finger, I usually just get an overall impression of their body language and actions as to whether they're weak or strong.

One time ONE TIME i did it!. It wasnt that bad was it!?.

Some young pup the other day didn't pick up on this, obviously if I was carrying on a conversation with someone while moving all-in showing no interest and continue talking, I've a monster and pocket queens are no good.

    I'd j7 soooooooted...

    no, no and no.

when i first started playing cards this person was at my table - he done it that night and every night ever since that i have been on the same table. To be fair he holds a similar posture all the time but when he gets them good pocket holdings he clenches down on the back teeth causing his facial features to change.

Maybe i have it wrong and im misreading the guy - id have thought it was pretty obvious. Actually - quite possibly im the fool here.

Touching nose, staring into space / at feet, checking your cards at flor/turn /river....covering face...i also notice people sometiimes have a change in posture and tone of there voice when they raise pre flop with a monster...or when people call araise instantly, and slam down ther chips they usually have nothing

That means the Captain Zitto from the Fitz never has a hand, he nearly knocked me bleedin eye out one night slamming his chips into the middle of the pot, while muttering something illegible.

He had middle pair with a good kicker - he was worried that somebody had top pair with a sh1t kicker.

The people I play with usually look at me suspiciously and check behind if I do that.

Sometimes people get nervous/excited when they've a massive hand, and sometimes it's when they've got nothing. :)

Players often protect their cards with their hands when it's good.

I do this sometimes aswel, but its usually the posture i take when i'm all-in irrelevant of whether i'm holding a top hand or bluffing
