The Late Late Show in Limerick

I suspect the main reason for bringing the Late Late Show to Limerick will be to discuss our ever present violent crime and problems with anti-social behaviour. As far as I can see it, all this serves to do is further glorify these criminal who love all of this attention. They have achieved celebrity status in the city for their horrendous behaviour as people are afraid to condemn them. There will probably be a flurry of incidents involving murder and grotesque violence between now and the Late Late Show as the celebrity scumbags vie for the limelight and importance they will be given.

Are you sure someone from Limerick isn't trying to sell a book? :)

When is the show on? Where is it being done from? UCH?

I thought it was questions and answers that was coming to limerick

Late Late Show November 10 in UCH Limerick

They will probably have a feuding gang members in with police escorts. Makes good TV. They have no conscience if they do that - a whole generation of would be gang members will start preparing for their own Late Late Show in a few years. Its glorifying violence for ratings. I ma sure Joe Young will be in the middle of it

There is a person selling a book but she won't come near limerick.

Thats a bit unfair! Did you listen to Pat Kennys show this morning from Moyross. Very balanced in my opinion.
And the Late Late have already said that they will not nessecarily focus on the crime issue but is dependant on what is on the national agenda at the time.(eventhough it probably will feature at some point i would say..its inevitable really) but the reason its coming to Limerick is because the UCH is one of the only places outside Dublin that could stage a major television production. In yesterdays Indo it reads that it was tried in the Opera House in Cork and Goffs in Kildare and in terms of the look of the show, it wasn't great. It is part of an overall strategy to present more of RTE's flagship programmes from around the country. If they hosted it somewhere else you'd be giving out it wasn't in Limerick. TO me even if there is a section on Limericks crime, the show coming from UCH is a good thing for the city. Half the problem with this city is people have to see negatives in everything!

I imagine it will be a normal late late with probably local musicians performing musical acts.

Bill Whelan, Frank McCourt (hasn't he a new book out?), etc. There's plenty of good stuff to report on from the Shannon region too.

And where would these dozens of places be oh wise one, outside of Dublin. Very few! According to RTE there is nowhere in Cork Galway or Waterford. Outside of tht you are looking at the Helix which is surprisingly in Dubland. UCH is very well setup for live TV and thats the reason it has been used many times by RTE in the past.SO tell us, where are these dozens of venues you speak of!

If they can do it from anywhere then why not Limerick????
If they picked somewhere else you'd be bi***ing that they're shunning us and if they do it here you're saying (completely unfounded) they have a negative agenda.
    Are you ever happy?

no im not I was just asking a very simple question of whats so special about the late late sudioes, that it cant be broadcast from various places, I wasn't making any comment on limerick

    lads give him a break
I think he's dug himself in a corner and lets just leave him there
or he'll come out with the opinion that Limerick people dont let things go

I have been partially vindicated already

This morning, three weeks before the show is due in Limerick, its is being discussed bt Ian Dempsey on Today.fm this morning.

Apparantly Pat Kenny surprisingly unearthed the fact that Limerick people actually have a sense of humour. Wow - thats almost a positive !!! H e was approached by a gang of teenage 'youths' who brandished a firearm and questioned how much ransom might be available were they to kidnap Pat Kenny.

The subliminal message is clear. We are funny, in an extremely dodgy council estate sort of way......

Thanks - have a good laugh now.

The Herald: "I wasn't surprised by gun toting teen"I wasn't surprised by gun toting teen - Pat:...confronted by a teen armed with a gun..."

The Times: Gardai interview Kenny over Moyross gun: "...shown a pistol..."

The Mirror: (front page)"TEEN PULLS GUN ON PAT KENNY": "...pulled a gun on..."

I am sure the good people of Moyross are delighted with this publicity.

He most definately put his foot in it by saying that a gun in moyross was about as newsworthy as a priest in the vatican.

And it's a fair point. But everyone was too busy ripping you to pieces to note it.

Anyone care to enlighten us on why the late late studios have to be so special? And do you have media knowlege to back this up?

Anyone know exactly just what type of gun it was? One paper reported
it as being a Mauser Pistol but they could date back to nearly 1869!!!
They are the ones with (early models) the sweeping brush like handles.
(I'm not gonna give links to firearms pages in case anyone thinks its
    in bad taste)

I reckon that a Gun was not "pulled" on him but rather he was Shown the gun.
The Papers made is sound like the wild west where someone pulled it out
and pointed the thing at him.

    It was a replica.
The whole thing was blown up, partly by Pat Kenny, as the person who showed it to Pat, told him it was a replica but Pat never mentioned that.

I never usually watch the late late show or have much time for Pat Kenny but I though last nights show was good. I thought Pat Short and Jon Kenny were particularly good along with Brendan O'Carroll (for a change).

Of course Wille could not let the opportunity go by without making an appearance.

Once the opening sequence finnished the show went downhill in my opinion. The worst performance came from niall tobin, he is usually very funny but was very disappointed in his interview.

Westlife came along to sing a few careoke songs at the start, they could have at least sang one of their own songs at least.

I agree, Niall's interview was nothing compared to some of his previous ones, but I have to comment on on your "could have at least sang one of their own songs" - I wasn't aware they have any!!!!!!!!

and no one mentioned Sharon Shannon and gang .... and the Cowboy song etc etc ......

They should be on every friday night .... :p

    and Niall Tobin? ...... he's 77 years old ...... he's slowing down ......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭dv

I thought it was fairly decent. The intro obviously showed Limerick very well and there was no dwelling on anything negative. UCH looked great too.

Could definately have been better though. I probably would have preferred some kind of discussion between a few different politicians (maybe including the mayor?) rather than just Willie. I definately would have like at least a mention of the boundary extension. Of course Willie did come out with some classic quotes as usual - "being in Fianna Fail in Limerick in 1985 was akin to being a Jew in the 30's in Berlin". That's one heck of a comparison!

Niall Tobin was something of a poor end as well.

    Overall, though, quite happy.

GOD NO! If it was broadcast from Galway for example and they had a discussion about a Galway boundary extension, everybody in the country would turn it off. They needed something to interest the whole country and I think they did it fine.

I'm not saying a whole segment about it or anything but just some sort of mention within a general discussion about problems/issues in Limerick. There is a definite link to the situation in Moyross with 3 estates (I think) being in the county and the rest in the city, which is pretty ridiculous. Surely alot of things would be more straightforward if all of Moyross was in the one administrative region.

Obviously going on about rates from the Crescent Shopping Centre, on the other hand, would have been just plain silly...

I suppose they could have held the programme on Good friday and devoted the complete 3 hours to the boundry extension subject.... :p

I was also quite p****d off with http://TheLimerick.blogspot.com It was criticizing the guests "Sharon Shannon (Clare), Westlife (Sligo/Dublin) etc! So F**king What? When it's on in Dublin they don't just have Dublin Guests on. They said it was from Limerick but they never said it will have Limerick Guests. I'd love just to spite the people who are giving out, that they ripped the p**s out of the city because some people are just never satisfied.

The Late Late Show portrayed the city in a great light.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,338 ✭✭✭hobie

This was followed by Sharon Shannon, The Brennan Sisters and some half-wit that hadn't a note in his head singing "come Down from the mountain Katie Daly"

I absolutely loved that bit ..... bearing in mind the prog. is for a mixed audience, the old fella was a gem ..... :)

In fact I like it so much I've added it to my Youtube favs .... :)

After the great image of Limerick on the Late Late it was a pity listening to the Marian Finucane show on the radio this morning. They were back going on about the "horrendous" and "out of control" situation in Limerick. They made it sound as if the whole city is a warzone where people won't walk down O'Connell Street for fear of being shot. There are important issues to discuss but there's a difference between reasoned debate and something verging on sensationalism. They could at least have someone from or familiar with Limerick on the show who has an understanding of what's going on.

I know this is nothing new but it's annoying nonetheless.

Not necessarily a shooting on O'Connel Street...

I was walking the dog yesterday evening around 7pm along Clancys Strand and the little feckers at the Treaty Stone were throwing bottles after me and then at the little park another group of little sh1ts were throwing another bottle after me and the dog.

You know, all those little things like throwing bottles after people and spitting on people (if you cross the bridge at Locke Quay to walk along the canal) in addition to the bigger things in three (!) parts of this city are creating an inmage of this place which is not that positive. I'm almost ready to leave this crap location. I'm sick of it watching whats going on behind me.

I think that this ASB is just the tip of the iceberg. What in 10 years if they grew older, being 25?

I never have lived in such a desolate place like Limerick. This is really, really sad!

I was down in Cork last weekend and while driving through Blackpool a stone was thrown at my car by little thugs.

Recently I heard on the news that on the M50 motorway in Dublin about 10 cars were hit with stones from a nearby housing estate. Most had damaged windscreens but it could have caused a major accident.

I don't think moving away from Limerick will solve your problem. Places like Galway, Waterford, Clonmel, etc all suffer the same, ASB is a nationwide problem.

Having lived in Limerick, Galway and Dublin and having half my family in Cork, I can confirm that that crap happens in every Irish city, depending on the part of the city you're in.

Not sure why you describe Limerick as "desolate" though, in what sense?

On the in 10 years time thing, most of the knackers I knew when I was 15 are all working at trades, or in Dell etc, than going around causing crime or ASB. Most people grow out of it.

I'd like to counter your argument...but you didn't actually make one;)

Suffice it to say, there are serious issues in Limerick (no one's denying that), but the place is nowhere near as bad as the image that's out there.

22 years and I've had one incident of some drunken idiot trying to start a fight, and that's it. I know people have worse experiences but there are plenty of others who live in Limerick with little or no trouble and have absolutely no experience of the gangland terror apparently plagueing "stab city".

I'll add it to my "to Do " list for the monday repeat. Someone on YouTube wants to see the Westlife interview as well.

I was running out of hard drive space towards the end of the show, so I had to "economise" on space.

    note to self

    Westlife Interview
    Donegal Song
Munster Rugby song at the end.
