Best cardio workout

    ok so my goal is to get to a decent level of cardio fitness and maintain it before i return to an intense muscle building programme. Firstly is it a good/bad idea to spend the next week doing purely cardio work before hitting the iron?
    also what is the best form of training for this?
    HIT in the gym or interval running outdoors?

    All suggestions welcome
