HDTV Suggestions.

    Hey everyone,

I just recently bought myself a 360 and now im planning on getting a HDTV to go with it. After looking into it i've read some horror stories about game lag from HDTV's due to resizing to the native resolution(or something like that.)

So its making me worry that if i dish out a fortune for a TV that i cant play games on. Has this happened to anyone yet?

I'm looking to get a 42" Flatscreen LCD, any suggestions on what i should go for? Also which kind of models should i stay away from that have issues with gaming lag.

    Any help would be great.

    Cheers.

How much u willin to spend?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭Terrynova3y2

I'm looking to spend between €1500-€2000 I've seen some nice ones in Peats but its just the whole gaming lag you can get which bothers me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,860 ✭✭✭Julez

I've never heard of what your talking about! The gaming lag?! Maybe on a tv that has a slow response time?! But most hd ready tvs should be fine!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,639 ✭✭✭Laguna

Yeah you're talking about T.V.'s with $hit response times, it doesn't tend to be an issue with the higher priced, more reliable brands but you still have to be careful, I wouldn't call them horror stories though, I mean it's annoying but not life threatening!. 8ms or lower is perfectly acceptable for gaming, I myself am quite content with my 16ms monitor but hey, I'm poor, can't afford the big bucks T.V.'s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭Terrynova3y2

I've read a few things on IGN that has listed a few TV's that make games unplayable, i dont want to be stuck with the crap luck of getting one of these tellys without realising it ya know. Anyone have a Flat panel LCD screen that doesnt suffer from crap response times?

Thats the article about gaming lag, its worth a look.

Any other TVs anyone can recommend?
Also any thoughts into what kind of sound set-up i should go for? im looking to kit out my house now so i can live like a potatoe for a bit lol.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭Terrynova3y2

I know they do and i know other place have loads, but im asking for other peoples opinions on which TV's they suggest or vise versa which they think i should stay away from.

    Cool.

Well I'm operating iff a samsung 32", 1 of the previous models to the one I showed you. They're really good and they're the tvs that are being used on the 360 displays in shops and also in the Xbox Live Gaming Centre.

Get a Samsung, in my opinion there the best out of all the brands, picture quality on them is excellent.

Anyone got any good recommendations for someone who can't afford 2 grand?

Anything around a grand would be do-able

I use 2 sharp aquos LCDs for mine. I got this 32" 1 for under 1000 a while ago http://www.sharp.co.uk/Product.aspx?ID=1091

Only problem is it dosnt come with the HD RGB connection so I had to get a VGA cable. but it does have a an RGB to VGA adapter which I only noticed after I got the VGD cable :p

You what? When did it change? it was always 30ms or lower would work fine for all games. If the 360 was pushing 300FPS then I would understand but they don't. Most monitors/HD TV's are 16 or lower anyway, only a handful are over that.

yep samsung all the way as far as i'm concerned. i got a 26" there a couple of weeks ago and the picture quality is amazing! that komplett model seems to be the same range if not a newer one to mine, so i'm sure it would be just as good if not better.

Picked up a 37" HD LCD tv in Dunnes for €999, its cheap, its by a no name brand, Maxim, but it really does the trick, my games look great.
Now admittedly the PS2 stuff looks crap but the GC stuff looks pretty good.
The 360 though is where it really comes into its own, Test Drive Unlimited looks fantastic and I can at last read the text in Dead Rising without damaging my eyesight!

The 32" LCD TV (Hyundai) they have/had in Xtravision is good, and under €1k
Don't know if they're still selling them though

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,617 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

re the posts about response times..

the OPs issue is nothing to do with response time, read his link, it's all about scaling and deinterlacing delays in the processing on the display, nothing to do with the response time of the LCD at all...

To the OP, you need to see some displays in action or look at the displays that let you turn of processing, the ign articles or others online give you a lot more infor than you will find here..

Don't know where you got that idea from, it does have HDMI. Maybe the really really early ones didn't, but I have it and it most definitely has a HDMI connector.

There is no point in getting 1080p for a screen that small.

1080p...decent...affordable....You'll be waiting a lot longer than 2 years!

1080p is recommended for big screens, think 42/50"+

Go to your local Sony Centre and pickup the Sony Bravia 50" HD 3LCD rear projector with HDMI input for €1650 with stand. I have this TV and a 360 and its amazing for the price its not very big at the back either. unless your looking to hang your tv on the wall this is the Job. The quality of the 360 on HD is awsome and this Tv has a great viewing angle for a rear projector. For 1650euro this is a complete bargain and wait until you play FIFA on this thing

    Yes it can.

It can support HDCP over DVI or HDMI to qualify for HD Ready status.

You have a point. But many things that claim to be hd ready are hdmi enabled, so there is still slight confusion with most people.

So for all you people planning on buying HD sets, make sure the model is hd ready, AND hd over hdmi, and not only dvii.

    Who cares about HDMI?
None of the studio's are going to implement HDCP for a few years, probably never.

Are those Bravia Rear Projection TV's any good?
Any Rear Projection TV ive seen hasnt been much good that's all.

McGovern, lots of people care about HDMI.
What about Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master Audio??HDMI is by far the easiest option for them.

The quality granted is not amazing for standard tv but when you have the 360 hooked up running at 1080i its excellent quality. I don't think its got to do with the fact that its a rear projector though any plasma or lcd 50" isn't going to look great with standard definition.

For best picture you should be running it in 720p ;) (assuming its not a 1080p screen)

Rear Projection TV's arent known for a quality picture thats all.
Ive never seen HD on them only gotten as far as DVD's and they didnt look too good.
    Ill check em' out though.

I have a Philips 32" LCD HDTV model which I bought last year its excellent although I just saw the new Samsung range in Dixon's and it blows it out of the water. The colour range and black levels are much higher.

In Dixon's Jervis Street branch they have 3-4 of the following range:
    http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/television/tftlcd/le26r74bdxxeu.asp

Each one is hooked up to some kind of High Dev playback hard drive playing a high def loop of scenery, a plane taking off, a football player and a clip of Project Gotham Racing 3.

Not only is the picture excellent but the Tv's themselves have a very nice Piano black Lacquer finish, although they would be a magnet for fingerprints and dust.

I think that they had the 40" version for just under €2000 but they also have a 60" + Plasma if you have a spare €9999.95

Clank, I can vouch for the 3LCD Rear Projection Sony Bravia - I got it for 1550 with a free dvd recorder to boot! 360 games look incredible on it. Standard analog tv looks good too (digital stuff like sky sports looks poor because compression used by sky and the size of tv).

I used to have the samsung one (that someone posted a link to here from komplett-quality set) the 26" version and it WAS better than the rear projection but i mean...50 god damn inches and the difference isnt that noticable!! (a little darker perhaps, not as sharp, less of a viewing angle) but when you put HD content on it really stands out and I cant notice (or at least its good enough to make u forget!) any diff at all - its savage and for the price cant be beat :)

theres a newer model out of that particular RPTV that has a better picture and more features for €2k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

I sell that one in work, theres a 50" philips lcd above it, and the philips pisses all over it as you would imagine.

I have the LG RZ-27LZ55 and I tried to use the dvi input the other day for the first time, for laptop(VGA) to tv(DVI) and there is a lip on the back of the tv preventing the dvi plug to go into the socket, and i dont want to try and slant it in as it will most probably damage or break connection, any recommendations o nwhat to do? are there any thinner dvi plus you can get as in less plastic around sides?
