Negative presses

    What are they exactly? I see some people posting about them, mainly in the fitness logs, and from the sounds of things they are a great way of squeezing out a few more reps?

    Take the bench press - when you press upwards or away we call this the positive half, when you let the weight back to its starting position this is called the negative half.

    Many people dont use the negative as part of the exercise but they are a great way of shocking the muscle and stimulating growth.

    When using the negative you really need a training partner, for when you've reached you last set on failure they will then lift the weight back into position and you resist the weight during the negative half.

    When training on your own you can also use the negative by resisting the weight as it returns to start position instead of just letting it collapse, so to speak, back to position. The ROM should be covered over approx 5 seconds.

    I would like to see some method for working the chest by yourself. I was thinking dumbell flys might be possible some way. You could make a barbell benching device lifting it up with the aid of your feet but it would be far too dangerous if it failed.

    You could do a flye to pull over they are quite taxing and really make me feel good after a set. But I don't know how you would do negatives of that...
