CSLL and transferring.

Hi I am a first year student of CSLL(German). I am kind of thinking of transferring becuase I am not really sure whether or not the degree is for me. I love German but I sort of feel that the linguistics and language side are taking away from the computer science side. I am sort of thinking would I not be better off doing CS on its own. I don't think I really like the linguistics side of the course as of yet. Can anybody tell me does this get better and does it ever even connect with computer science. It's hard to explain but I just feel like I am sacrificing CS for German. Does anybody know will German and Linguistics play more of a role in the Computer Part of the course in future years? Please help. Thanks in Advance.

Only person I know who is doing CSLL and on these boards is Ronny_Mitchell, and he hasn't been online for awhile. Crash might know a bit.

Otherwise, it might be worthwhile popping into the CS or Germanic Department to see if you can talk to an SS student, though I'm unsure how many there are!

Sorry. If you are thinking about transferring, the college rules are discussed on this thread (by Sisu), though I'd assume that CS allow quick transfers from CSLL to CS.

Oh, and read back over your own thread from a long ago here as Bill_Lumbreagh or someone mentioned something about CSLG :)

I don't know anything about CSLL, but I'm in scond year English & philosophy and I'm convinced I should have switched to single honours english a long time ago. Too late now. Just because you have a mild interest in something doesn't mean you should sacrifice something you have a greater stake in.

Don't know if that helps, but you don't want to be kicking yourself in times to come.

The most important thing is that you do the course that interests you most, rather than choose one that you think might be more useful to get a job. And since you say you love German then it sounds like you've made the right choice.

You shouldn't worry at all that CSLL is taking the CS part less seriously than the straight CS course, because that's not the case. Both courses do equal amounts of programming, and CSLL, instead of having hardware and electronics classes, has linguistics and a language. And in those parts of your course you'll learn a lot and you'll probably have a lot more fun that you would in electrophysics classes, especially if you're someone who likes languages. I actually started out in CS and did an early transfer to CSLG (best decision I ever made!) a few years back.

Give Linguistics a chance as it might turn out to be the most interesting part of the entire degree in the long run! Everything will link up together as well, and you'll learn Prolog (probably after Christmas) and do a lot of parsing (programming grammar checkers). Speech recognition is another area covered by CSLL but not by CS.

And finally, knowing a language is always a huge plus, so you needn't think that studying German is taking the place of something more important! Good luck! :)

NADA: if you want to talk about it, give me a pm and i'll meet up with you sometime. I got bored and looked into a few of the courses that CSLL do within CS today, so can give you a runthrough of some of em.

Hey NADA I'm JS CSLF actually in TCD this year, if you've any probs with the course or anything in general just pm me here or im on matrix as noddy so hey me there. All parts of the course tie in together in different ways, it's worth giving it a go. In first year you'll be doing a program in Java that'll be translation from English to German. Got to dash now but as I said any ceists just ask
