Stan and Co. will entertain an in form Czech team this Wednesday at Lansdowne Rd. with some more comical defending from the likes of Andy O' Brian no doubt.

I've never feared a game so much in all my life. Not only are we a hopeless wreck of a team, but we now have Richard Dunne suspended against a really good side this time. What can go wrong most likely will go wrong.

I expect this to be similar to the Dutch game and another 4-0 home defeat wouldn't be suprising. Never ever thought I'd say that about Ireland.

I fully expect Staunton to walk/be pushed after this game. I am absolutely dreading it as well !!

    Couldnt agree more.

5 - 2 against cyprus, wtf is going to happen on wednesday, Matt hollands comments were hillarious "sure we will get a one nill against chec rep and then beat faroe islands home and away" christ allmighty we are going to get hockeyed.

I dont think Ive ever seen a worse Ireland team and whats worse even the young guys dont show that much promise, I think we are entering a very dark period in Irish football.

Did 12,000 fans not travel to Cyprus to support the team last year? There comes a time when enough is enough. The current setup doesn't deserve that sort of support but I still expect to see a packed Lansdowne Road come Wednesday.

A good supporter is defined by how he acts when his team is losing.

Tell us more, I want to learn how to be a good supporter. How much money is it going to cost?

Surely being a good suporter doesnt mean you have to cheer away as a bunch of idiots who are honoured by being chosen to represent their country disgrace us all by putting in absolutely no effort whatsoever?

Being a good supporter and being unhappy with the current state of affairs are not mutually exclusive.

so how is "a good supporter" supposed to respond when their side gets hammered by a relative minnow like Malta who were described to me as Greeces B team before kick off (by my Greek mate). The Irish team let Ireland down and Ieland is pissed, we will still support them in their following games but is our belief in the players now gone?

The best fans in the world are Irish, Northern Irish(well Europe anyway)

I'd still go, but it's the thought of a cold wednesday night in souless landsdowne road which is puttint me off.

Firstly Bounty Hunter Cyprus beat us!!!!

Secondally if I could get a ticket I would go, but it would be like watching a car crash; you know you shouldn't watch but you just can't help yourself!!!

i dont know how to feel about the game on wednesday.

obviously, my heart really wants us to win because if we are to have any (fading) hope of qualifying, then we have to win all our games from here on in. so, from the point of view, that i dont want to watch another major tournament without ireland in it,i really hope we win.

on the other hand, my head says that if we win the next day, it will just cover up the obvious and serious faults that we have, starting with the tool on the sideline. then suddenly after beating the mighty san marino 2 times and then wales, we have 12 points and staunton is a hero with a contract extension until 2026. hopefully, the p45 is already being typed up in the FAI for Staunton and will arrive on Thursday morning, regardless of the result wednesday night. Staunton should do the decent thing, realise that he is way below the standard, tell the players that he will quit after the game and he wants to go out on a high. hopefully thats what will happen and i actually believe, we can win on wednesday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,717 ✭✭✭Praetorian

I'll have to find some Czech's to sell my tickets :(

The only good thing that can come out of thise game is that Staunton will be fired after it, and will be paraded in front of the people as the fool he is. Can he be given jail time for causing the country such embarassment?

San Marino would definately have beaten us last night. Lets thank god it was Cyprus because it actually could have been worse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    10 - 2 to Cyprus!!!!!!!!

That all? I guess the travelling fans in Cyprus have by far exceeded good supporter status then, although surely that will plumet when they decide to vent their anger at the team by jeering on Wednesday.

A good supporter will follow their team through the good and bad times but they also have a right ot voice their opinion. I will be at the match and I will cheer the team on. However outside the ground I think a "good supporter" should be the one to put pressure on the team/management to get things right. They are playing for the public.... for the fans and at the minute I don't know one fan that likes what he sees.

I want stan out. We need a manager who can get the most out of a squad of average players, stan can not do that.

gimmick, we were singin our hearts for the holland game, the france game, the swiss game, the chile game, the list goes on. as a previous poster says enough is sometimes enough, we're great fans but not stupid ones, we dont expect to win the world cup but we do expect the bare minimum of beating a team ranked 103rd in the world.

i take it your not a regular attendee at landsdowne road then gimmick? or does sitting at home with the sky remote constitute as being "part of the atmosphere" for ye??

Im a Ireland regular (all home and occasional away games) and i would not even consider not turning up on Wednesday. Anybody who is a real supporter of there team imo should turn up for every game they can get to and support the team no matter what.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭Bateman

What a stupid thread. I am very apprehensive about Wednesday. Richard Dunne is the only one who would have had a hope of getting to grips with Jan Koller, I don't know what kind of chance we have now of preventing him from scoring, probably none.

I think the players should be shown how unnacceptable being beaten 5-2 by cyprus is, fans should boycott the game against the czechs to show that support is not unconditional the fans should at least expect effort off the team.

We could always check if Paul Butler is busy? He could take up where he left off against Koller a few years ago :)

Why? So they can ignore the current state of affairs? I'd rather write out a cheque to the Queen of England for the amount a ticket costs for Wednesday.

You not turning up makes absolutely no difference to the bigger picture, but does [I guess] make you feel better.

Me turning up or not makes absolutely no difference to the bigger picture, but I'm hoping me roaring abuse at whatever player comes to take a corner/throw-in near me will stick in their minds. That's the hope, and that's my way of making myself feel better. Each to their own IMO.

Lol i was pissed it was 5am ish and i had been downing my sorrows and typed Malta but the Irish fans should be expected to respond like this after our national team has become a joke which it has ( i live in England where freinds of all different nationalities were suggesting we went on Holidays to Cyprus yesterday... o how funny). Im not pointing a finger at anyone after this result cos i dont believe its an individual problem i.e Stan but there is a problem and saying that does not exclude me from being a good suppoter it makes me honest, in saying Ireland are slowly becoming once again a minnow in world football and i hate that fact.

I wont bother pointing out the irony of that assertion, but however, in answer to your question - I was a regular attendee to Lansdowne up to about 2 years ago, when I just wasn't enjoying it and travelling from Cork to see crap on a wednesday night, and being up at 7.30am for work again in the morning just didnt appeal to me anymore, so now my tickets are used by someone who appreciates them.

As for singing etc in the East Stand, it must be a very small pocket, as I have never heard a sustained chant coming from there which last more than 15 seconds.

For the record - Ireland to win 1-0 Wednesday.

i actually think, that on the basis of last night, that we would have struggled to beat san marino away, it was that bad. cyprus totally and utterly hammered us out the gate, we lost by 3 goals and it could have been 6. would anybody have said before the game that cyprus would have been 5 or 6 goals better that san marino let alone us? rememner, we struggled against the mighty faroe islands the last 2 times and that was when confidence was good, with decent results behind us away to france and the swiss.

I don't think we struggled against the Faroes to be honest, on both occasions the players gave the performances necessary to win comfortably if not spectacularly. Doesn't constitute struggling IMO.

Every thread about yesterday has turned into farcical one on one debates between people over nothing to do with the issue at hand so time to move on slightly and think about Wednesday. There is a squad there, whether we like the players in it or not, so who do we play?

The Irish squad for Wednesday’s game now reads:
    Paddy Kenny (Sheffield United)
    Wayne Henderson (Brighton)
    Nick Colgan (Barnsley)
    Andy O’Brien (Portsmouth),
    Stephen Kelly (Birmingham City),
    Steve Finnan (Liverpool)
    John O’Shea (Manchester United)
    Aiden McGeady (Celtic),
    Stephen Ireland (Manchester City),
    Kevin Kilbane (Wigan),
    Damien Duff (Newcastle United),
    Clinton Morrison (Crystal Palace),
    Robbie Keane (Tottenham Hotspur),
    Alan Lee (Ipswich Town),
    Kevin Doyle (Reading),
    Alan Quinn (Sheffield United),
    Kevin Foley (Luton Town),
    Andy Reid (Charlton Athletic),
    Alan O’Brien (Newcastle United).
Sean St. Leger (Preston North End),
    Paul McShane (West Bromwich Albion),
    Jonathan Douglas (Leeds United),
    Jay Tabb (Coventry City)

    My eleven would be:

    Kenny
    Finnan
    O'Shea
    O'Brien
    Kelly
    McGeady
    Duff
    Quinn
    A. Reid
    Keane
    Doyle

As much as I want Keane and O'Brien dropped we need to think logically. Simple fact is they'll play.

Coukd be Sean St Ledger and McShane.

Not sure about defence. Putting aside Sat performance, i still think o'Brien has a lot to offer (it wasn't so long ago he was putting in good performances under Kerr's reign) but for this game, prob be best to put O'Brien on the bench - his nerves must be shot to pieces. Would like to see McShane play.

    Doyle in for Morrison.

And maybe Foley/Reid in for Ireland/Kilbane.

What team would you pick to play the Czechs?
    Germany

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,514 ✭✭✭Rollo Tamasi

    Kenny
    Douglas- O Shea - O Brien - Finnan
    McGeady - Carsley - Ireland - Duff
    Keane - Doyle

Either Alan O Brien or Kilbane in for Carsley if the wizard fails to pick Carsley for the match
Maybe Douglas in CM with Stephen Kelly at RB would be stronger actually.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,903 ✭✭✭The Rooster

John O'Shea has been playing quite well for the Mancs when situated in front of the back 4. Thats what Stan needs to do, will give us a bit of stability in the middle and offer protection for the back 4 (well it should be Carsley, but as he's not been called up it has to be O'Shea). I'd be sorely tempted to play both McShane and St Leger but that might be too risky. You'd have to hope and pray that the game will bring Andy O'Brien on a bit - we paid a big price on Saturday for his lack of football this season.

    Colgan
Finnan - O'Brien - Newbie - Kilbane (the only position Killer is capable of playing at international level, and only because of the lack of options)
McGeady - O'Shea - Douglas - Duff (Ireland took his goal well but was still outplayed by the Cypriots)
Keane - Doyle (with Lee first sub rather than the Clint)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

I'd play Ballyfermot United. They may get a result!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

The reason we were beaten so miserably was the fact that Kilbane and Ireland played in central midfield. If he goes with an equally attacking team against the Czechs we'll be slaughtered. Every time our attacks broke down Cyprus had a decent chance which is all down to the midfield.
