Jaysus...love one of these for the kitchen but none at all on the shelves in the Dundalk store....and it doesn't look there ever has been.
Apparently the place has a sale on...could have fooled me.

In Carrickmines they were clearly marked as a special offer at €50 down from €109.97, so not just a scanning thing. Receipt says €109.97 with discount of -€59.97 below. Seems from other replys it was only a local offer, but it's strange if someone got them in liffey valley too

A similar product is available in Maplin for 180 euro (down from 230 euro). A little pricey but good capacity.... 160gb

look at the size difference though, not gb wise but dimension wise. the packard bell can be carried around the maplin would you'd need a ruffsack to carry that around.

They are in Galway branch as well, seem really good value for the price. Think they are 59.99 here.

Anyone know if they will play all video formats when connected to a TV. i.e. DVD files and divx

Here's how i've found it so far.

Box says it plays mpeg1 & mpeg4(so plays xvid/divx). But also played mpeg2 when I tried it. Wouldn't play a dvd folder i copied to the disc. When i renamed the .vob files to mpg it played the files, but only one of the four vob files played with sound, this was the first vob of the movie, the second, third and fourth files played with no sound even though from same movie and same file format (mpeg2/ac3).

No aspect ratio control for movies (uses the file aspect ratio) and no shuffle feature for music. Using the file browser is really the best way to select movies or a folder of music to play. You can browse movies by thumbnails and music by a long list of your songs, but this is way too slow to navigate.

Video and audio quality seems good. Trasfer speed seems pretty slow for usb2 though, 1gb in maybe 6-8min, might be the way i have it hooked up, but i don't think so.

Need to have it connected to a tv and use the remote to play files, because no play controls on the drive itself. If you put a memory card into it, you can press the copy button on the front, it copies the memory card contents to a new folder on the drive.

Also comes with nice velvet type pouch btw

Asked the girl at the checkout in Liffey Valley the price and she said €105, should have asked her to scan the item. Can someone confirm if they do scan at €50 on LV?

Just wondering is it like this picture http://www.packardbell.co.uk/products/on-the-go/storage/store-and-play/store-and-play-50gb/productsheet-C044380001-689.html
or the one on the PC World site as the Packardbell site picture looks cooler:D . Also just wondering like other 2.5" HDD caddys will it work off the usb cable power or does it need to be plugged in?

    Thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭hshortt

Also just picked up one, last few remain now with now outer shell box, just the sealed pack. It comes with a dual USB head to mini-usb adapter for use without the (also included) power cable.

I suspect that the drive can be replaced to a higher capacity, might need to clone it first to get the software unless it's already on the software cd.

    Cheers
    Howard

Anyone know if they're doing this in the new store in Naas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,267 ✭✭✭mcgovern

Would have liked to get one of these but not driving across the city at rush hour!

It's the one pictured on the packard bell site, their specs are wrong though. Drive inside is a seagate momentus 4200.2 st950212a, just a standard laptop drive. Wouldn't think the menu software is stored on it, that would be in hardware.

Tried PC World in Blanchardstown last night on the way home.

One left on the shelf. Marked down from 199.99 to 109.99. Asked girl on till to scan, came up 109.99. Asked Customer Services to check, came up 109.99.

Guy did say that Naas were selling them at €50.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,161 ✭✭✭cubix

Girlfriend went into Airside this morning and as Popey21 said they are selling them for €79.99. She talked the talk and walked the walk and the manager gave it to her for €59.99;) . They were holding one for me in Carrickmines until today @€;59.99 so if someone wants that one please post and I will pm you the Contact name and name being held for. The only thing is as mentioned before here they seem to be display models and outer packaging is gone and is shrink wrapped

As far as I know pc world have a price promise policy.... if the same product can be found cheaper in another shop including their own branches... wouldn't they have to match that price ??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,726 ✭✭✭qwertz

I phoned PC World Swords yesterday afternoon & was told they were still in stock at €79.99

I called out last night and they still had a few left. When I went to the till, they said the price was €109. When I told them about the earlier phone conversation, they let me have it at the lower price.

However .. I can't get the TV connection working and am looking for help.

If you can help, please let me know ?

Went to PC World Blanch late last night. Looked around the Store for ages and nearly gave up when I eventually found them as I was about to leave.

There were still quite a few of these Store and Play HDDs being sold at the 109 yoyos price.

Spoke to a manager about the fact that these were being sold in PC World Carrickmines for 50 yoyos a few days ago.

He replied that those units will be marked down in the next few days or so.
I asked when will that be.

He replied that he will sell one unit for 57.
    I said how about 2 for 100

    Done! :)

Got one for me and a friend... Mine works great on some Movies, but it did not support the Qtol (I think!) codec, but there is a link on the CD for upgrading the firmware. Overall I'm impressed by this device... Great find

Do you think he'd sell more for that price? Don't want to go all that way for nothing, but would love to get one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭Dammer

My brother in Law tried PC World in Naas (Nearer Newbridge!) and they had loads. But when they went to the till the 109 price came up. Give them a call first if you are based in Kildare, TALK TO A MANAGER!!! about the fact that PC World Carrickmines sold these units for 50 yoyos a few days ago....

Someone up thread mentioned that PC world do a price promise on the same item found cheaper within 7 days they will match. This was what I was going to base my argument on if I came up against some resistance on dropping the price. In the end I did not have to.... :)

    Best of Luck haggling.....

None left in Blanchardstown, and they wont be getting anymore in :(
They do have 160GB and 250GB models but not cheap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭Dammer

Those 160 and 200 GB models are the Store and Save line. NOT the Store and Play line that this thread is about. They are just HDD's without the firmware / hardware to play vids and MP3's and display the Pics on your TV

Ring PC World NAAS, My brother in Law said there were loads there yesterday.

My workmates wife went to Blanch to get one for him, and she also was told there was none left. She was also told that they are End Of Line so that's why they are going cheap.

If you are near Blanch, try Liffey Valley. Might be a good idea to call the nearest branch to see if there are any in stock?

Good luck I hope you get one...

Sorry didn't see it. They said it was the 109 price but did you talk to a manager and try and get the price match with the Carrickmines store?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,200 ✭✭✭kensutz

Yeah said it to them and they had no interest and walked off.
