WARNING: THIS THREAD WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR VERONICA MARS - SEASON 3
In the wealthy, seaside community of Neptune, California, Hearst College stands as a beacon of higher education, but within this idyllic and sun-drenched campus, higher education is not always what it appears. In between the beer-soaked dorm parties and all-night cram sessions, the student body is facing a terrifying threat. Luckily for them, incoming freshman and part-time private investigator Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) is used to taking on a few extra-curricular activities.

In the interest of keeping discussion on a specific show / episodes together, this is a general discussion thread for discussing said show during it's upcoming season.

so...my thoughts so far after seeing seeing episode 1(no spoiler tags needed for episodes already aired presumably)

    new opening credits
i REALLY like them! the show has finally lost its 'teen/highschool drama' look and now can focus on being what it really is: a full on Noir detective show.
its a bit too LoVe-y(Logan/Veronica) for my tastes, but on the whole thats understandable due to the fan reaction to it. great colour scheme too! Also yay for Muhney and Majorino on finally becoming regulars, very well deserved on both parts.
The only downside really is the theme song, it just doesnt suit the show anymore, it was THE perfect theme for season 1 with Lilly's death and Veronica's ostracization from her peers, but, that all went away for the most part in season 2 and a new more fitting theme song should of been chosen.

    the new characters
i had major reservations about them both, but ive been really pleasantly surprised actually. i'll continue my discussion on them later because my head hurts

    3.01: Welcome Wagon
good introduction for new watchers, no flashbacks in the first episode while still talking about and re-introducing past events is a definate plus.

    a-plot: Piz's Car Theft
overall, i liked it. good introduction to Piz and the clues were presented and the case was solved in an interesting and believable way.

    b-plot: Keith's mission
not particularly illuminating or interesting, but should be interesting to find out its outcome(hopefully soon). on the plus side though, it was great seeing Vinnie again.

    the ending
even though i guessed something like that must happen, as it was obvious the Rapist storyline would be revisited. It was still shocking when it happened and im definately interested to see where the storyline goes.
    roll on next week!

Good idea keeping all VM threads together.
As far as I know the rapist mystery is the big mystery for the first 8/9 episodes when it will be concluded and then a new main mystery will be introduced.
I've heard that the second mystery will not be concluded within 13 episodes (very smart attempt to keep it on the air they can't drop it while the mystery is unsolved;) ).
I hope the pace picks up a bit in the next few epis though cause I thought it was a little slow (it had to be to draw in new viewrers i suppose)

Ah now here. i hate the new credits... I wasnt a big fan of the dandy warhols to begin with but they used the song to good effect. now it makes me want to go into a coma.
Hmm anyhoo will spoiler tags be used on this thread? i assume so since its not episode specific.
    3.01
I dunno if i like logan veronica together. I mean i wanted to see them togther, but logan is at his best when he's an angry self destructive bastard. my bets is there'll be a break up of some sort before the season is over and a rekindling near the end.
Some people say dick shouldnt be still around and his character is useless, but i reckon itll be interesting to see how he's developed since beavers death.
excited to see what happens with kieth, not overly interested in the rape story line, but it would be nice to george michael and alia again.

    Blasphemy.. he's a fantastic character!

    Apparently..
they've got Alia Shawkat for an episode or two.. but Michael Cera is busy with his band and a movie role or two.

PS - heh.. just noticed you called Michael Cera 'George Michael' (as his character name in AD) but you refer to Alia Shawkat as 'Alia' (and not Maebe)! :D

Not a bad episode. I liked the credits (especially the pic of Dick for some reason) but not the song. I agree with Herobear on that. "We Used To Be Friends" was a great theme for season 1 and I can see why they stuck with it for season 2 but if they were changing the credits they should have found a new tune.
I thought the ending was predictable, they would obviously want a rape victim to be close to Veronica and that seemed the purpose for Mac's roomate. And the shock ending to the first ep was how they did it last year. I honestly believe the Hearst rapist storyline is the reason for the Beaver did rape Veronica afterall, retcon. I don't like the implication that it might have been Dick, which seems squeezed in for the new viewers when old viewers would know he hadn't.

Is anyone else suspicious about whether Kendall is actually dead as Cormac actually shot someone off-screen. It might just have been laziness, as I think her storyline should be over but it seemed that if she was definitely dead they would have shown her being shot.

The worst part was just before the opening credits. I think Veronica was being a know-it-all and pointlessy bitchy to the TA. But maybe she has issues from when he threatened to shoot students in the school-yard last year.:D

It appears Weevil will reappear in the third episode if http://www.neptunesite.com/news.htm have it right. Also other interseting stuff there but ya have to keep an eye out for spoilers if you that way inclined.

Good episode.. better than the first episode of the new series anyways which i thought was quite meh!

The Stanford Prison Experiment with Logan and Wallace was very entertaining viewing.. and the investigation of Theta Beta was quite interesting too.

Keith's stuff and the Mac / Parker stuff was however all a bit filler.

Good few appearances of some classic TV greats of yesteryear - the fantastic Samm Levine, who has but a few minor roles in TV and films since 'Freaks And Geeks' *, and also Rider Strong (coolest name ever) - who i've only seen in a starring role in Eli Roth's 'Cabin Fever' since Boy Meets World' ended.

Some of the dialogue was quite hit and miss.. but it was patchy at the beginning of last season too. Might take a couple of episodes for Mr Thomas to get his "writing legs" back.

Funniest bit of the episode: Logan's "Come here... i'll tell you what you wanna know..... i DO like Pina Colada's..... and getting caught in the rain!" :D

And was it just me... or did Lamb's first appearance (and comment) at the start of the episode just seem really REALLY cruel? I mean i know Veronica and Lamb haven't exactly seen eye-to-eye in the past.. far from it but the "isn't this wolf cry number 2?" comment and the incinuation that Veronica's rape was all made up was all a bit below the belt.. might be just me though!

PS - everybody spot Homer?! :D

PPS - anyone else think the guy sitting beside Wallace in "Homer's class" at the start was soaked in pink paint before they came into class (see image attached)? Yes.. i realised it was the projector.. but it took me a minute. Either that or they ate whatever the pink alternative to what Violet had in Willy Wonka.

    * yes, i know. Basquille's obligatory 'Freaks And Geeks' comment had to get into there somewhere! :D

It was an improvment over last weeks ep alright. I think the idea of having the series broken up into three storylines could work quite well. It might cut down on filler episodes.
Like the Keith storyline. Here's hoping he turns into badass Keith to solve the case.
    basquille wrote:

I did indeed. He even threw in a little "D'oh" for good measure.

Yeah, the lecture halls all seem to have pink stained glass windows for some reason.

Yeah an improvement on the first ep. No Piz this week presumably him, Parker and Sherrif Lamb have contracts like Duncan and co last year.
The experiment was very good I like Wallace and Logan together they never got screen time together before.
Sorority story was good it's nice to see Veronica's not infallible every now and again.
Don't know where Keith's storyline is going.
Dick seemed to be back to being Dick again in this ep

Lamb's comment was pretty low but he was that much of a prick to her when see first reported it. However he hasn't seemed to be as bad as that to Veronica ever since.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,193 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Yeah.. kevmy just reminded me of that.. did the producers just forget about the whole Dick showing up at Logan's door in tears and saying "he messed up really bad this time" (or something like that) at the end of the previous episode?

We didn't learn what he did.. seemed very much back to normal this week. Hope we get a resolution to that next week.

heh yeah i remembered one name and one character but not both! i didnt see alia tho :(

    Hmm im sticking to spoilers
I liked the episode, and the Keith storyline. its good to seeing him tripping up a bit. that better not be the end of it though. i expect mr fitzpatrick is gonna come and pay him a visit..
I really think veronica should have held some restraint in delivering the pics, she dug her own grave there.
I also liked the standford experiment reference. as always, classic line from logan.
ehhhh i reckon its pretty clear as to how dick messed up. lets see...
he made a fool of himself half naked at rape protest, and got the **** kicked out of him in a food court. then got kicked out of the girls dorms..all the while being an obnoxious drunk.

I was a bit uncomfortable with the buzzing conversation. here they were talking about a rape and the writers seemed to be making a dildo joke.
    eh.

still very good, and was great to see sam in it!

I thought is way better than last week, looks like she is the most hated girl in college now. I hope they focus on Keith a bit more and bring the darker side of his character out. He is too nice for a PI.

Btw Logan and Wallace worked on the egg experiment last season, dropping the egg from a height without breaking it.

On another note, new show called Vincent starting on UTV tonight. It's about a PI agency. Don't know much more but I will give it a look.

Gah.. this week's episode was terrible! Possibly an all-time low in VM history.. behind the 'One Angry Veronica' episode (remember Veronica on jury-duty.. that episode was just downright atrocious).

Anyways.. not a whole lot happened to be honest... no real progress on the rape storyline.

The Veronica - Logan (or 'LoVe' as the cool kids are calling on the Net.... yes, how "cool"!) stuff was dire, tired and clichéd.. Mr Thomas, if you're reading this, do us all a favour and break them up. I prefer Logan as the sarcy taunting bastard he was when he's not in Roni's knickers!

The investigation has me nodding off half way through.. and was it just me or was the dialogue just really off this week? Am expecting at least a funny quip in Roni's voiceover at the start of each scene.. some terrible ones this week: stuff like "so how did people blackmail each other before e-mail? 30 years ago, i'd be here all night cutting letters from a magazine and getting glue everywhere, now it's just one button!" - what?! That's not clever, witty, smart or insightful - expect better from Mr Thomas's writing.

Was good to see Weevil but dear God.. hasn't he got chunky since his last appearance? But his character was always fun to watch, if a little one-dimensional. Was hoping he'd stay on with Keith.. shame!

Ed Begley Jr cast as the Dean.. always loved him, especially his 'Arrested Development' appearances.

I couldn't wait for this episode to end.. that's how little i thought of it. Oh.. and no Mac or Wallace... criminal!

I'd hoping for a MASSIVE improvement next week!

agreed, you can tell the script writers are reaching when they turn veronica into a bunny boiler.
oh lordy i dunno. please please please get better so that it doesnt get cancelled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

Geez,it wasn't that bad! You're making it sound as bad as an episode of CSI.

Granted, not the best investigation storyline, the stuff with Weevil was good,he did get a bit fat though! While the overall storyline for the episode wasn't great, the writing,in terms of dialogue was still fine. Heroes could learn something from VM in terms of dialogue that doesn't make you cring.

we'll be finding out whether or not the season will be expanded to 22 episodes, or it'll stay at 13 before the end of the month apparently.
i dont want to jynx it but honestly i'd be surprised if it doesnt get expanded, the ratings for gilmore girls have been very good, and for this show(put into persepective of last season on upn) record high. so there's hope yet!

as for the episode, the a-plot(with the linebacker and his playbook) was fairly crappy, and logan/veronica relationship stuff wasnt nearly as gripping as it should of been, but overall i liked it, i love Piz :D and Weevil was fantastic too.
with that ending you can imagine there'll be total war next week!

I'd just like to point out that Weevil was fat at the beginning of season 2, too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭iguana

Not really liking it this series. It's just lost something, if I knew it was going to be on a channel I have later in the year I wouldn't bother having my cousins send it to me.

I'll keep watching it, but I really hope it gets better. Neither Veronica or Logan are being very likable, if I had just tuned into this show I doubt I'd keep watching. But the first series was fantastic and the second had it's moments so I'll keep watching until they screw up Cliffie!!! God I hope he comes back.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 291 ✭✭pokerwidow

Have to agree it was on the dull side. The case was a bit obvious, especially when they showed the odds on the game. It feels like there is something missing. I still wish we could watch the grown-up (Keith) work and why oh why fire Weevil? That storyline would have been good.

I am not going to stop watching it though, still entertaining.

Only seen episode 3 last night. It wasn't the best alright especially the LoVe stuff and the main story a little week but there were good points. Weevil was good, the dean was good and the Sisters vs Lampoon guys was good enough. I think this series was always going to have big teething problems. A new network, a new college and almost all new story lines as very little could be carried through due to new characters. Having said that they have to stay true to the characters they have while reintroducing them. For example we will probably see more of the bookie guy (can't remember his name), the dean, the sisters and prob the lampoons. Whereas characters like this were introduced in season one and then used extensively in season two (eg. Meg) they all have to be introduced now if they want to use them later on in the season.

So a 6.5 outta 10 for me. I expect it to improve, I hope it will and I think it will.

PS: Weevil should cut back on pies and I've a suspicion Keith might use him again on the side to help out.

Another quite poor episode this week.. it's definitely a long way from the Veronica Mars i used to know and love at this point.

This week especially i find a lot of the dialogue was falling flat.. and the storylines this week - especially the Logan and reporter posing as Charlie storyline was absolutely pointless. The only highlights of this week's episode was the scenes with Dick - especially showing up at Roni's door.. the man can do no wrong.

People may be saying i'm being too harsh but i was one of the first (by no means the first but definitely one of the first) to praise this fresh show 2 years ago now.. and i've stuck with it through the amazing first season and patchy second season (by patchy.. dialogue was still fantastic although the plot / mysteries has weaknesses). And was all set to enjoy this third season.. but 5 episodes in and NOTHING significant has happened! The rape mystery is slowly winding away.. i thought they'd make use of Mac but she's barely a main character in it.

Oh, and no Mac or Wallace again this week... :(

    PLEASE IMPROVE!

Sadly, I have to agree. The days of impatiently waiting for my weekly viewing of Veronica are seriously numbered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭iguana

I agree, another poor episode. And Veronica is again being really unlikable. In fairness whether justifiable or not it is understandable that Parker would be upset with her, so Veronica's righteous indignation with her was appalling. The whole "I know exactly how you feel, since Shelley Pomeroi's end of year party 2004" fell really flat as I hated the Beaver raped her after all retcon. And the only reason they changed what was the most powerful episode of the entire show, imo, A Trip To The Dentist, was so they could have Veronica deliver this type of line. And for her to deliver it in such an unsympathetic manner was unforgivable.

And I also hated how she outed Logan's "brother." I think a normal person in that situation would talk to their boyfriend in private, and break the news to him gently. In fact season 1 Veronica would have. Instead she decides to out him in public in the most cruel way possible for Logan to find out.

So far this year I really dislike Veronica. She isn't the smart, sassy, caring character she was for the previous two years. She is coming across as a know-it-all bitch who likes nothing better than to show everyone how much smarter she is than them and then rub their faces in it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭kevmy

I thought it was certainly better than last weeks. Now she's more involved in the rape case and I thought a lot of the dialogue was better as well, maybe not Season 1 standard but up there with Season 2. And we got more fantastic Dick scenes. I agree that there still isn't enough of Lamb, Weevil, Mac and Wallace but hopefully they'll get their turn again.
As for bitchy Veronica well imo she always was a bit of a bitch especially if you crossed her. We also got to see more of the old Logan in this episode as well.
As I said last week it's still settling down but i'd say that from this week on they've got everybody where they want them for the season so things should kick off from here. Another poor (last weeks standard) episode would really be a blow.

And please give Mac, Weevil and Wallace some air time next week.

About feckin' time too.. only getting it now as i forgot about it and my cousins errrr... RSS feed didn't pick it up!

We need Vinnie VanLowe back too.. a very brief appearance in episode 1 was nothing.

    Bring Back Vinnie!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭kevmy

A big improvement imo more at the level I'd expect. Great to see Cliff back and Weevil and Lamb getting some real airtime. An interesting mystery of the week, some movement and intrigue in the rape story and both Keith and Wallace getting their own sidestorys.
It's good to see it finally settling down in Hearst. Bringing in characters (Ed Begleys Dean) and places (gambling den) from previous episodes in a good way and giving them more importance. I wouldn't be disappointed if it kept up like this for the rest of the season.

For next week keep it up .... and bring back Mac

I just watched 4 & 5 together and they were not that bad.

The black shop cashier had the funniest lines, something like they bought condoms to stop them producing bastard children, the morons.

So Claires boyfriend raped her or not? I am losing interest in the rapist case, who cares at this stage?

Cliff was brill and so was the Dean. I cringed when Lamb did the robot dance, how ****ed up can you get.

Only 2 more episodes of this section, anyone know if another 7 will air?

Obviously I am the only one who still watches :) but episode 6 is so much better, just like the old ones. The case was interesting and Keith's car crash made me jump off my seat. Great stuff.

Episode 7 is supposed to great, watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVS08JiEzlU.

    USE SPOILER TAGS!!!

im still really interested in the rapist storyline, its just the minor episodic plot lines that are boring me right now(alot like season 1 i suppose). i am SO in love with Piz & Parker though :D oh and lamb too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭iguana

It was definitely a better episode. I liked how the main characters are starting to interact as a group and I like how Lamb is having more than one dimension for the first time this season. The one thing that bothers me though is that a lot of Veronica's unpopularity seems contrived. I remember in college being the only student to get an A in one exam when the next best student got a D+, but nobody looked at me with intense dislike the way the whole class looked at Veronica.

The women protesting the rapes are all quite irrational, and it is obviously being done that way so Veronica is the voice of reason against the rest of the world like she was at the beginning. But just because she was unpopular in season 1, she doesn't have to be every year. I didn't like season 1 because it was Veronica against the world. I liked it because it was a well thought out, engaging story, that is the season 1 feel I am looking for, not emotional nostalgia when it doesn't fit.

You aren't the only one don't worry. Yeah its definetly picking up in the last few episodes and this one was better again. Good to see Keith getting down and dirty (and we got to see his room ... for the first time ... in a house with 5 rooms). Finally Wallace and Piz and Parker getting some meaty stuff in the same episode. Pity we won't see Mac till episode 9.
I know your saying that the Veronica against the world is a little contrived but I think it was more that she was becoming a teachers pet rather than that she was getting an A.
Good to see that the standard is staying high and as I said last week keep it up.

PS. Ed Begley has been great in this so far, really funny in this episode

episode 7, and the first big deal of the series. i dunno how plausible the whole drink spiking was... i mean is the rapist following veronica around just waiting for her to conveniently leave a drink unattended? or did he spike her spagetti with hair? hmm. IMHO, VM's strongpoint as a series has always been the logic of the crimes... maybe'll it will be explained in the next ep.

as someone forget to spoiler earlier
the rapist mystery will end in episode 9 and a new one will start - that certainly seems likely now. veronica will go hell for leather from this point on trying to sort it out.

series 3, so far is boring me. its hard to believe its 1/3 the way through. COME ON, lets see a murder, or a mass murder, or a big conspiracy or something.
although now that i remember the unspoilered post, it was said there would be a major character death, so thats probably a grisly butchering. im trying to think who... weevil, perhaps? or logan...? in fact i hope its wallaces stupid roommate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

The plot about the stupid girl looking for her boyfriend annoyed me. I just wanted to slap her for being so stupid, even if she was right about him in the end. when she started talking about lasers...grrrr

The ending was chilling i thought. Chevano,I think it was plausible how it happened. I would imagine it is quite obvious to everyone on campus that Veronica is trying to solve the rapes. It would have been good for the real rapist if someone else had gone down for the crimes, but Veronica stopped that. The rapist obviously started following her because she is trying to catch him. Perhaps the drink spiking was just luck on the rapists part. He saw an opportunity when she left the drink there. I would assume sick rapists do carry GHB around with them!

It does need to pick up pace a bit though.

So does the rapist shave their heads and then rape them? Bald, unconsiciouss lady's is a pretty strange kink. It seems likely that the rapist is a woman then, simulating rape situations for some ulterior motive? As I'd imagine the head-shaving to be a post-rape, territory marking rather than something that he would do first.

Either way I think this show was a bit of a one season wonder. Pity.:(

Well.. it looks like it's got itself a full 3rd season (20 episodes)!

    Read here!
Just heard from Rob Thomas, and the CW has given "Veronica Mars" a back seven instead of the traditional back nine. This is obviously brand-new information for them, so it'll take a while to figure out how this will affect the later two arcs. (My guess: since they're already at work on arc #2, the last one will take the biggest hit.)

This is good news, certainly for this season, and I don't know that the slightly reduced order is a big danger sign for the possibility of a fourth season. The CW hasn't been as successful out of the gate as expected, and they may be looking to pinch pennies until they get through to next year. Or maybe I'm just being naively optimistic. Wouldn't be the first time.

UPDATE: Rob says he's still trying to figure things out, but as of now, the plan is to do a four-episode arc for the end of the season.

Thought the latest episode was the best of a bad bunch to be honest with the last couple of minutes being particularly chilling.. the vision of the rapist in black was certainly effective.

good news I guess, better than just 13 episodes. You would think thye would just give them the last 2 episodes if indeed this will be the last season!

If ratings don't improve in the second half of the season there will be no season 4. It's not a good sign of faith if the show isn't given 22 episodes:mad: . Warner Bros. which produces the show need a fourth season for the show to have any syndicated life. So maybe the 50:50 CW might compensate for that. I guess it depneds what shows they have in development for next season.

I just hope if this seires is the shows last they go out on a highnote. But from the reviews and general opinion the first part of the season doesn't live up to one and two.

I think it has improved in the last three episodes even if it did get off to a shakey start. I don't think we can take much out of the fact that the rapist shaved some Veronica's hair as he probably did that just to show her that it was him. He knew he had to take off when the car alarm started up.
The story with the missing boyfriend was a little stupid and was really just used to get the Fitzpatricks and Vinnie Van Lowe back into it. I hope it continues as it has picked up and should really move on from here. The move to a new college was always going to be tough but it had to be done.
I think the 20 episodes is good news cos if the really wanted to get rid of it why bother ordering more episodes.

Not a bad thing.. Vinnie's my favourite non-recurring character in it!

I'm in work so can't check but remember one of his lines last week being hilarious!

I kow it's not a bad thing I like Vinnie too, just saying the rest of the storyline was a bit stupid. Especially as said before about the lasers, I work with lasers and I know you don't learn about them in first year Physics. That just annoyed me.
But overall a decent episode 7/10

Ye good episode. So many of the rapes were actually real? I presume it was just those two that faked it,pretty stupid imo.

Looks like the end for Logan and Veronica,Im surprised the lasted this long,I expected them to be broken up sooner.

    wallace's hair...:p

    next week looks good! :D

Twas an alright episode.. preferred last week's one though this week's had a very sharp funny script for once.

Some fantastic lines in the Dick and Veronica scene.. especially the "Keester Eggs".. and the "what next? You want me to tell you where i buried Jimmy Hoffman?.. Dustins' brother?" line was classic too! :D

I read in Michael Ausiello's column that while Rob Thomas always remained optimistic during the show's iffy renewal chances during season 1 and 2, he isn't at all optimistic for a fourth season so enjoy possibly the last 11 or so episodes.
