Are USA putting something in the water?

Ok after years of watching American telly and noticing something very strange I thought I'd come to the fountain of knowlege that is after hours to try and find an awnser. How come American kids are so overgrown? By that I mean, I was watching Judge Judy there the other day and one kid was sueing another kid through his parents, the two kids were standing at the witness box thing and Judge Judy asked them what age they were, they said 13 and 14, no one batted an eye. These kids were about 6ft and 5ft10 and one had a full goatee, the other had side burns.

I've noticed this for years, like you see an American girl on some MTV reality show and shes 5ft8 and has breast that must be about 32c, and she could easily walk into any pub over here without being ID'd then she says shes starting high school after that summer. I mean whats the deal, are the US gouvernment(sc) pumping growth hormones into the water supply or what?

I have been on holidays to a few countries and seen all kinds of nationalities in Ireland over the last few years but I haven't noticed this to the extent with American kids in any of them. Even the Lithuanians, that tend to be big fukkers in anyways still look around 13 when they are 13.

it has nothing to do with the water...

its just American fat kids cant stop eating junk food, sorry let me re phase that, Americans cant stop eating junk food.

they should forget about the war on terror and "concentrate" on the war of fat

I think you're kind of missing the point the op is trying to make here. He's saying that kids in the US seem to grow alot faster than they do here regardless of how fat they are.

I'd say the Soda. Its simply not the same as here for one but also it is so cheap and refills are free nearly everywhere that people drink it like water.

Yup i agree, they have been taking in growth hormones through their meat/dairy products for years... hence big feckers!

Yep all of this combined with the "Vite-amin" (vitamin) tablets they take.

I believe Ruu will be posting a picture of himself in Know your nerds soon - compare it to the last one he posted and you will see he has grown 6 inches and is now built like a brick sh!thouse.*

I always thought that the Aussies are the same. They look about 27 when they are 19

Funnily enough I had someone say that I looked 27 at the weekend when I am really 21, the bastards.

    "But I'm 37....."

Wrong. Another sweeping generalisation thats off the mark once more. Below are the first 3 American kids that came into Pigheads mind.

    http://www.sitevip.net/macaulay-culkin/images/gallery/02.jpg

    http://tvphotogalleries.com/data/576/1DS04.jpg

    http://entimg.msn.com/i/CreepyKids/SixthSense_300x298.jpg

All tiny weedy little fcukers. Ireland is full of strapping young lads. When Pighead was a kid he sat beside Alan Farrell in 3rd class. He was 6ft tall and almost as wide. He was huge.

Fair enough he did stay back a few years but thats not really the point here. The point here slipss is that you are wrong. And the sooner you admit it the sooner we can move on to the next thread.

I was 6 feet tall at 12... i never grew beyond that.. so im still 6 feet tall at 27.
I always looked older si it just depends on the person. Look around on a friday night at all the young slappers all done up to look older. Thats all the Americans are doing....

It is the growth horrormoans and the ammount of protein in the diets of the children.
This has gotten to the extreme that 9 year old girls are starting to have periods.

Hai joo, I'm no yankeh boi.:) Of course, the growth of US kids has to do with..government experiments, no other explanation.

Yes this puzzled me while I was there last year, most of my relations friends were over 6 feet, one who played basketball on the same team as my cousin was an astonishing 7feet tall I kid you not. I was thinking what great full forward he would make for the kingdom, anyway we have Donaghy now for that!!

I came to three different conclusions,

    1) Is that they have much better nutrition over there, good food is cheap compared to here.

    2) There is a massive Gene Pool, 280Million+ people means the genes are varied allowing for natural selection, compared to here where we are all someway closely related. Also as I said there is 280Million+ people so obviously there will be more tall people, but is there a higher percentage than in Ireland/Europe?? Begs the question

    3) Obviously the US Government has something to do with it too, Hormones etc. Still a good idea, I wish I was over 6feet

yes that is a great idea, we ban growth hormones on our cattle because of the danger that they will get into our food chain,
why not eliminate that problem by just feeding the hormones directly to us, that way the food chain is not effected.
that does sound like a Yankee solution to a problem

Yeah, but you are eating their hormone-fuelled meat!...no innuendo please, boards is family-friendly (no innuendo about that either!).;)

I think the US has long been a nation of high-protein intake (as Thadeydal pointed out) compared with Ireland. For a long time the Irish diet was so reliant on carbohydrate that most protein we got was taken from dairy but even that was low compared with the US.

High protein + growth hormones = big feckers :)

I'm not sure about the influence of genetics, the caucasian US population is still very European genetically-speaking so they aren't much different from us. How high protein and hormones interact with the genes is different.

Suggestion for those boardsies with 2 kids. Feed one with only the best American imported meat and the other with spuds only until they reach 21 - that way you have a clearer idea of the genetic influence :D

In the 80s I was a 9 year old Irish kid in school in New York. Nearly every single child in my class was a full six inches taller than me - it was pretty damn disturbing! (I would say my height was normal for an irish child, I'm 5'11'' now).

You can see it starting to happen in Japan now. The young people are more and more starting to eat US style diets and they are towering over the older generations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

yup its the "nutrition" in the states that results in this. in fairness the same things happening here or havent you noticed the sudden explosion of very big breasted women in ireland? (mate of mine thinks thats a conspiracy by SMA , or as he calls it the Superior Mammory Association :D )in my day they werent that big or full. and i dont know about you but i and my brothers are a clear foot taller than my parents which they put down to the whole milk scheme in primary where you got it everyday with lunch.

seeing as the states were doing this stuff generations ahead of us it only makes sense they'd be further down the path of what that policy would do. in a generation or two if we avoid living on junk food we should be the same.

that said it is disturbing to see 12yr olds with DD chests :o

agree totally with the OP. On average they're a good bit bigger and larger that irish people (not just talking about fat!)

It really messes with your head when you're on the pull. I remember chatting to this one girl and thinking she was a bit older than me (maybe 27) and it turns out she was 21! They tend to look like adults much sooner as well.

the richer the food and the more sexualised the society, the earlier kids develop ... from what i've read, girls over there are now getting periods aged 6/7, this is all part of the same trend ...

Mewow some one is still smarting from thier ban from PI this morning,
I did mean Horrormoans as I know too well the horror they can be.

The bigger average breast size is not just diet and horrormoans via meat it is also due to the average 18 to 15 year old being on the oral contraceptive pill.

They choose all the tall, good-looking* kids for Judge Judy, then throw away the rest.

please show me the statistics that show the majority of irish girls are on the pill cause the majority of em have fine babs. plus if they were why do we have such a lage single mothers rate ?. tis the food man, or possibly fluoridation :D

Maybe it's due to all those immegrants who left their home countries in a hurry. Such as us Irish. During the potato famine for instance, only those who were fit and healthy made it to the new world. Their "good genes", along with other immegrants could have something to do with it. Of course the rest of us were left here to fester.:)

I have a few cousins who were brought up in America, and in my opinion, they do seem to be healthier. Their parents (my aunt and uncle) would have left in the 60's and would have come from a rural background, which meant that when they got to the States, their diet would have been similiar to the Irish diet back then, yet a little richer due to food being of a better quality back then.

Another point, which is probably irrelevant to this thread, is that tradionally people from rural backgrounds would have been much taller than those from an urban environment due to ease of access to fresh food. It's only within the last hundred years (probably less. Children in parts of Glasgow had ricketts up to the 1950s) that urban dwellers have caught up, perhaps due to better preservation techniques.

Or else due to the proliferation of junk food, some sort of equilibrium has been established.

Ok maybe I put too much emphasis on the telly thing, but I did say reality shows not non-fiction with actors (and before some smart arse points out that they probably use actors in some of the reality shows, well ha, beat you too it). I just used the telly analogy because as you would expect, most americans that I see on a day to day basis live inside my telly, but I have noticed this in the Americans I've met in person over here and abroad aswell.

TBH it is a real phenomenon. i work in foreign exchange and anyone who wants to change travelers cheques has to present a passport for ID and the number of american teenagers that could pass for 21 is frightening. no wonder bouncers are so tough on them. i had an entire class come in once (yes its was so much fun that day:D ) and i wouldve sworn blind they were at least 18, turns out on the passports they were average age 14. bloody frightening:eek:

Ever been to Korea. I have. The people in the north and south are families separated by a DMZ, yet those in the south are significantly taller and healthier than those in the north. Nutrition vs. near starvation.

There also is talk of hormones in hair products and the steroids in the beef thing has been talked about quite a bit. But it is definitely a phenomenon. You see girls who are 12 that look like they're easily 21.

And speakin' of big... I work at a place that the average guy is the size of an NFL linebacker... around 6'2" 230-250 lbs. and not of the fat variety. Around here they call it "corn fed" but most likely it's because were half-breed alien spawn.:D

    Must....go...the.. mothership...is... calling.

Americans had been the tallest people in the world for well over a century. But they have been passed by the Dutch.

It's a combination of genetics and diet. There is latent potential in the genes which manifests itself in the gene pool over time with the optimum diet. That being one high in protein. The height gap between Americans and Europeans isn't what it used to be. The dietary habits don't differ as much as they once did. Americans are still tall by global standards but with immigration from Non-European sources and the maxing out of genetic height potential they are unlikely to regain the mantle as the worlds tallest people from the Dutch, who themselves are likely to be overtaken by the Norweigians. :p

They are still growing horizontal though ... and that's another trend where Europe is behind the Americans but naturally will be narrowing the gap in the future as with height. :D

I'm working on it devoted to the cause for my country.

I don't know about the height thing. I am 16, 6foot size 13 feet and could easily pass for a 19 year old and probably older. My mates are huge as well 15 year old mate is easily 6"1 and growing and another mate is slightly under 6 foot and built like a tank.
