I would also like to partake in this event.

Guys Chris Brennan is like the addition of chocolate to milk. He taught a seminar a few years back and I'm still learning/using his rubber guard and half guard stuff.

Cool, Chris is in the game a long time. I'm sure he's a bag and a half of knowledge.

I've been to a couple of the seminars that various dignitaries have given here and beyond any doubt Chris Brennan is the best.

I'll break that down and say that:

    1. He is the most personable and friendly of the guest instructors. Plenty of time to hang back and talk, interesting stories and legitimately friendly.

    2. The stuff he shows is instantly and consistently useful, interesting and from a perspective different to that I've seen in most Irish Jitz.

    3. The techniques he shows have both an instant practicality and a durability.

    4. His teaching style is open and friendly.

    5. He will roll with everybody. Something that can't be said of any of the other instructors.

    6. he has silky smooth skin.

Suffice it to say, I advise you go. And I'll see you there.

Suffice to say it'd be almost worthwhile coming back from Australia for the week for this! (Almost) I emplore everyone to sign up straight away and then bug The Shane for a copy of the list of stuff Chris teaches on the day - He writes it all down in his trusty little notebook. Brennan is the f**kin' King of the Kimura!!!

Chris will be bringing over NOGI (the original, not brazilian stuff! :p ) stuff including board shorts, rashguards, tshirts, beanies, hoodies, baseball hats etc. Anyone who has this gear, knows what good quality it is and it will be on reduction at the seminars.

A reminder that places are limited due to size of my gym and remember I have all the NG guys going too, so book early.

Duly noted Peter!;) Yep Bank Drafts or Postal Orders are more than welcome or find a mate with a cheque book. The numbers are genuinely limited by space so i dont think ill be able to take money on the day. Anyone who has trained out with us at NG will know what I mean.

Can I ask would this be suitable for a beginner like myself, having only around 7-8 months training??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Hey Clank, I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes. I saw a vid of Chris teaching a seminar and it was all very logical. I find when I get a technique that is way beyond me at a seminar, as long as I drill it a few times over a while, eventually it slots into my game maybe 6 months later.

Gonna go get a bank draft now :D

Clank, there arent really any advanced techniques in bjj, there are some that are more difficult to grasp than others but anything Chris shows you will be able to use while rolling if you put the practice in. He doesnt have any secret death techniques only to be taught to advanced students. He does have one wicked kimura with about a 100 set ups and variations though :D

Best of all he has used them in many different mma events at a high level, so he knows what he is talking about.

In short its suitable for anyone with even a week of jiu jitsu under their belt, even though we dont wear belts cause its nogi :D

plus if you got to youtube.com and search for next generation brazilian jiu jitsu you can see chris teaching some stuff and some ninjas too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭The Shane

I'm going to miss this, this makes me sad and angry. I expect some one to take notes and get back to me with anything cool - which will be everything.

Below a breakdown of the last seminar - some of it only makes sense to me, but gives an idea of the breadth of stuff covered. As for level, everyone can drill this, nothing too difficult. The difficulty lies in applying it when you roll.

    1. (a) Whizzer
-Opponent has double underhooks on you
    -Weight down heavy with armpits
-Turn to one side keeping overhook
    -Hop back
-Kick up leg closest to opponent, between his legs
    -Drive with shoulder to mat
-Worry not if this doesn't work straight off, Keep hopping back, Keep driving to mat with shoulder

    (b) Defence to whizzer
    -Hips low
    -Hips in
-Reach across opponents body grab his leg
    -Kick out tripping leg
-fall on your ass, roll to top position

    2. Mount transition from result of 1.(a) (not sure what position this is I think it's half guard or something)
-Hold leg and head -cradle like
-Spin on chest to opposite side
    -replace arm with knee
-pull up opponents hand on ground
    -overhook tight to armpit
-knee to ribs (from posting leg)
-heavy hips bring other knee (holding opponents bottom leg) into full mount

    3. Mount with opponent hugging to prevent VT punching to seated kimura
-Hugged into high mount, hands posted out in front
    -step up on one side
    -inward pressure with knee
-push on face to break grip
    -secure arm, weight forward
    -body twist for tap

    4. Armbar from mount (s mount)
-One knee further up than the other
    -sit off
-weight on chest with thigh, don't give any space
    -kick leg around
    -flick over other leg

TIDBIT- In armbars the ankles may be crossed when you have both arms secured, otherwise the knees should be pinched which is made harder when you cross ankles.

    5. Breakdance shoulderlock
-Knee ride with close arm overhooked
    -Heavy shoulder
    -Post with free arm
    -Jump, twist hips
-near leg on top, far leg hooks at knee

    6. Heel hook from attempted guard regain
    -Side control
-Opponent shrimps away, brings in lower leg
-allow to rise above first knee
-jump up pinching opponents knee between your knees
    -overhook ankle
-sit back pinning leg and hip with feet
-Catch heel hook with blade of arm

    7. Twister from open guard
-Wrist control and feet on hips
-Throw legs to one side, armdrag on that side
-Half guard with figure 4 legs
    -reach around, grab arm
-Hip out and pull arm back
    -get on top of arm
    -hug head and hip in

    8. Pretend Kimura arm drag
-Closed guard, Opponents hands on floor
    -Open Guard
    -Sit up for kimura
-Hip out using "kimura" as a pivot point
-take back by pulling over, ideally trapping, arm

    9. Guillotine
    -Chin strap
    -Little finger on chin
    -Rotate in

    10. (a) Omoplata variation
-Closed guard, with opponent judo pinning you ie. hips held, elbows tight.
-Hip out, while forcing opponents head away with forearm
    -Arm is now isolated
-Bring ankle over shoulder and under chin
-triangle the legs and stick foot under opponents shoulder to shoulder lock

    (b) If opponent stands up
    -release shoulder
    -hook knee
    -Straighten legs

    (c) If opponent rolls
    -Follow into side control
    -Bicep slicer

    11. !/2 guard sweeps
    (a)
    -Lock down trapped leg
    -Underhook free leg
-Lift trapped leg and drive down
-use momentum and underhook to drive over

    (b)
    -Lock down leg
    -Underhook other knee
    -Come out behind
    -Take back

    (c)
    -Hip Out
-Pull in foot on free leg side at hip
    -Trap arm and roll

    (d)
    -Hip out
-Pull in foot on free leg-side at hip
-Bring in trapped leg-side as a hook
    -Your knee on the outside
    -second hook above the first
    -Elevate and finish

    12. Anaconda to compression
-Defends anaconda by bringing elbows back
-reach hand in from defended side
    -Grab elbows
-Tripod and walk to defended side
    -Jump to guard
    -SQUEEZE

    13. 10 finger sprawl guillotine
    -Opponent shoots/ turtles up
    -Sprawl, grab head
    -Chin strap, both hands
    -Chest against head
    -Elbows in
    -Chin strap guillotine.

if on M50 head south to cherrywood exit. take exit ramp and follow road through big roundabout, straight across bridge through 2 sets of lights and look for loughlinstown leisure centre sign on your right. Follow road around till you see pub, shops and large leisure centre type building, we are upstairs in activity room.

if you arent on M50 take Nll south to loughlinstown / ballybrack exit, and then as above.

Cr@p, I thought this was in St. Andrew's!

Anyone willing to give me a lift from Firhouse? It's right on the M50 so if anyone's travelling along that I can meet them at the Firhouse exit en route.

Surely one among the attendees had nothing better to do of a saturday night than to come home and post a report. Well better late than never. What was covered, what are the teaching points, did it rock as much as I know it did?

I want a report now soldier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

I got soul but I'm not a soldier!

    Anyway, the seminar.

The room got noticably sexier when I entered, and when began the seminar after we gave the other attendees a little time to adjust.

    Takedown 1: From under-over,
    • Solid underhook with right hand, step back hard with right foot and pull back with right hand
    • If done right, your opp should step heavily.
    • With your right foot, step in between his legs and sag your bodyweight into him with your underhook
    • Guard!

    Takedown 2:
    • Thai clinch with one hand, other on elbow of opp's thai clinch
    • Keeping your thai clinch elbow pointing in (across his chest) pop under his thai clinch
    • Keep tight, takedown is easy

    Ten Finger Guillotine
    • sprawl against shoot
    • wrap right hand around chin, with just ring finger/pinkie on his chin, thumb at his adam's apple (note: girls won't have an adam's apple)
    • left hand overhooks opp's arm and holds right hand in place
    • hip in, lift arms, and curl your thumb back towards your body
    • opp should cough

    to flying triangle:
    • From above, if opp starts to defend choking hand, keep his elbow in
    • Jump up and triangle the mf
    • sweet!

    Open Guard to Back:
    • hold opps wrists with your palms facing up
    • slid legs off, left foot in between his legs, right leg to the other side
    • arm drag with left hand, shooting your left leg further between your opp's legs
    • Keep armdrag tight, if opp pulls back, he should be pulling you further onto his back
    • throw right leg over for the hook, 4 points!

    Twister! and variations thereof.

    Footlocks (cheap!)
    • In butterfly guard, opp can be heavy on your chest, or hips, not both.
    • if opp is heavy on hips, underhook and pull your kness to your chest
    • shoot right leg through opp's legs, and wrap around his hip from the back.
    • left foot should still be hooking the back of his knee
    • If opp rolls, roll with him.
    • someway of trapping the other leg which keeps your leg safe, I can't explain the details via message board.
    • heel hook (ouch!)

    X-Guard.
    • From butterfly, if opp stands up, keep left leg in.
    • Pass right knee though, right foot should now be in front of opp's legs, creating that sexy x shape as your ankles cross.
    • telephone grip his left leg.
    • Pull in and push back out
    • Done correctly, should take knee ride
    • If opp has good balance, keep pulsing the x-guard by pulling in and pushing out. They all fall in the end (unless you suck)

    Side control to triangle:
    • Opp digs for far side underhook
    • Grab wrist and let him get to his side, meanwhile tucking your top leg underneath your butt (you should have the near side arm killed)
    • fall back to tasty triangle.
    • Excellent for smack talk, as they think they've escaped.

Side control to five finger guillotine:
    • Opp turns inward, with top hand cup his head as in ten finger guillotine
    • take half guard (sounds crazy, doesn't it?)
    • Hip in, arch your back, stomach facing the floor
    • curl thumb back towards you.

    Near side kimura:
    • Opp braces with near side arm against your hip
    • Dig you top hand through, your top hand should rest palm up on his stomach
    • scissor swith your legs and fall back onto your back
    • leaving elbow free, apply pressure
    • Worst description ever!

    Some secret techniques.

(BTW, it's important to point out that Chris is a heel hooking motherf-er, it hurts to walk now, that SOB!)

Rolling with Chris. 3 minutes. I was first. At first I thought I was doing really good and moving well. Then it dawned on me that he was toying with me. My pride hurt. Then he kimura'ed me. My arm hurt. He played a ridiculously smooth floating game. I felt very little pressure (wieght) but couldn't move to save my life.

Some story about a spider bite.

General advice to beginners from Chris:
    • Always fight for underhooks, bottom or top
    • roll frequently and with a variety of different people. The more you do it, the easier it becomes
    • Buy me something nice at every opportunity.
    • Drill until you are completely sick of it (That's about 100 times, not 2 or 3!)
    • Shadow box in front of a mirror. Watch yourself and improve. Don't just do it in front of a wall and think you're cool.
    • When Chris goes with really poor guys, he works fast paced attacks. Sub.Sub.Sub.
    • With really good guys, he plays defence. He claims this helps him be good at both.

    Boo-Yah!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Good job memory man, I shall forever more use this report as my own memories of the seminar.

When I was buying a pair of nogi shorts off Chris, he was searching for change, so being helpful I said "Do you want a five?", he stopped what he was doing, looked up at me and said "Did you say do I want to fight?". He was probably fvcking with me but lets just say I corrected that very, very quickly.:)

Anyway, I enjoyed it, lots of cool stuff. I also rolled with Chris and he just toyed with me too. At one stage I was expecting him to take my back and he had a footlock on and it took me a while to realise where he was, never mind what it was. I tapped when it dawned on me! Good thing he didn't crank!

Yeah, good work Colm. Saved me writing it out and forgetting most of it.

I like heel hooks. Now to get good at them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,857 ✭✭✭Valmont

I think Colm summed everything up nicely. I really enjoyed the triangle and heel hook variations, the twister was great aswell.

I enjoyed watching JK and Chris roll, it really was a different level than what I'm used to watching.

I'm going to start stretching my shoulders for all the submissions Chris is bound to get me with when I roll with him on Monday
