have you ever actually been to a BB show? The "orangeness" is from all the fake tan they have to wear to stop themselves looking washed out under harsh stage lights. It also enhancecs muscle tone and definition.

Sure, it looks stoopid when they're walking down the street, but I'd rather give kudos to the weeks and months of dedicated hard work and training they put in that'd make the average gym rats' eyes water at the very thought of it.

And they're not all on steroids. Many of them are, yes, but not all. There are natural bodybuilders around whose physiques are just as incredible.

Sorry but how can you tell that they are not on steroids especially when allegedly a lot of them are.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,819 ✭✭✭✭g'em

Natural bodybuilding competitions have strict anti-steroid regulations and routinely test competitors. The BNBF is an example.

Otherwise there's a lot of governing bodies that turn a blind eye to steroids, it's an 'accepted' part of the sport. That's not saying that it's right or wrong, just that the issue of using is part and parcel of it.

If its a sport, how come its in the Rec section of boards eh?

How come whats in the Rec part of boards??? This is a fitness board my friend, not a bodybuilding board. Fitness can be very relaxing and is very good for you, i would consider my own health and fitness endevours to be part of my recreational activity.

I imagine you had a point in the post, but sadly it got lost somewhere between you thinking it and you typing it. ;)

Now then, on to the roids,

    keys words, "not" and "all"

She didn't say they are not, she said not all of them are.

Now then, if you want to step on stage at 280 ripped pounds, with 3% Bodyfat, dangerously low water retention and striated glutes then there is a 99.999% chance that you will need some kind of pharmacology to help you do that. This is very obvious, as the effects of the drugs taken are very obvious due the the aethetic nature of the sport.

However, as already stated, there are plenty of fully tested, 100% natural comps out there aswell.

I would consider bodybuilding a 'competition' rather than a 'sport'. I would say the same of other activities like figure skating though (but apparently I'm wrong about that?).

Either way, I wouldn't get caught up over it & I certaintly doubt that having a boards.ie sub-forum in the sports section is the official definition of something being a sport.

well rock climbing is a sport it doesn't have a board, windsurfing is a sport and doesn't have a board. just cause something doesn't have its own board in sports on boards.ie doesn't mean that it isn't a sport

Before I ask my question I will say I know a few body builders and have the utmost respect for what you guys do. And I have been to some body building shows too.

Is the drug testing, WADA style drug testing or is it specific to the sport. I did hear that it was testing for diuretics.

I think the rational behind this is that lack of fluids can kill much like cyclists not being allowed start races if the red blood cell count is above a certain level.

Emhhh.....i only know of one person who has competed that posts here, and while my goals at the moment are low BF levels and muscular hypertrophy i would never term myself a bodybuilder until i have earned that title and stepped on stage.

Now then, i am unsure what the "hijack the fitness forum" thing means, as we have many skilled people who post here, and we all do our best to give whatever information we can.

We have people like Because I Can, an avid Oly lifter and sprinter who gives some excellent advice, we have Odysseus ( hats off to the guy ) a long range marathon runner, we have AmazingEmmet into the flexibility, balance and CNS side of things, we have personnal trainers like Boru and Transform and then we have the self thought guys like G'em, T-ha, JSB, SmellyIrishMan, Michael etc.

I really am lost with the whole "hijack" reference. People post there goals and we try and help them, if we think they are doing something wrong we explain why but everyone's choices are there own and they can take our advice or leave it.

Maybe you saw something in a thread that we have missed , if you do simply let Jak or Daveirl know about it and they will deal with it like the fantastic Mod's that they are.

Do you have to compete to be a body builder?

Hey dude, specific compound testing is very, very expensive, so i am unsure which orgs do it, but any tested org's will do the old testosterone ratio's testing, which while not being flawless is a pretty good way to go about it. I believe some of them also do random compound testing from the top 10 placers and such other tactics.

back on topic I have to say that I probably would never want to go down the competing at a body building contest, I think the cutting would effect other things that I like doing to much, that and i have to say I would feel like a complete tool with all the fake tan and doing all that posing.

(this is all hypothetical anyway as I wouldn't have the dedication to ever train as hard as top level bodybuilders, or any other top level athelete does but i am jsut going to ignore this fact for now;) )

Effectively, yes, or else your just lifting weights and training for the fun of it. I suppose there is that difference though....you know, "competitive bodybuilders"???

well the IFBB (one of the biggest bodies for BBing) which hosts the Olympia's became a signatory to the WADA code in 2003. A list of all the prohibited substances is available on its website www.ifbb.com

However, that said, the IFBB is not exactly known for its natural competitors, and doesn't test like the BNBF does.

Snivilian I think its time to leave it there and move away. Unlike the football forum the fitness forum is a place where people post and we discuss things in an adult manner. The football forum is where you post up then get insulted from all quarters because you don't follow the same team as someone else.

If you enjoy coming onto a civilised board and making a lame attempt to disrupt it or that you will only recognise a sport once it has its own forum on an irish website then you really need to get out more!

    1. read the op

    2. I just asked why there is not a body building forum and I get abused by everybody.

SORRY! I never meant the BB's are on steroids!
I meant they're like giant oompa Lumpas!

Some natural shows polygraph(lie detector) test the athletes.

Yes the fake tan on BBs can look ridiculous - especially when it's put on badly. However if you don't have it (& lots of it), your muscle definition will be wiped out by the stage lights and you could easily lose the show over it. People do what they do to win. Snow-white Irish lads with farmer tans in posing trunks would probably be even more ridiculous?! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

swap the trunks for home made cut denim shorts and your even more ridiculous again!!!

    bodybuilding.com has over 100,000 members.

As for the original post, bodybuilding as a sport is dead handy in many ways. Granted it has its bad parts like having to wax and put on tan, but cyclists and swimmers have to shave, boxers have to dehydrate etc...

However, bodybuilding has the definite advantage that if you are good, you can say it to anyone. For instance, tell someone you're a top tennis player and they might not believe you because you can't very well start playing in a pub. Tell them you bodybuild and you are displaying your game right there. Also gets you a lot of attention...
