Ireland Squad, Reid back in

    Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton has recalled Charlton midfielder Andy Reid and handed a senior call-up to West Brom defender Paul McShane.

    Staunton has named his squad for next month's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Cyprus and Czech Republic and has included under-21 international McShane, 20, in his 25-man squad.

    Reid was left out of the previous squad as he struggled for first-team football but has since left Tottenham to join the Addicks.

    Preston centre-half Sean St Ledger has retained his place in the squad selected to face Germany earlier this season.

    Staunton told the Football Association of Ireland website: "Paul is an excellent prospect and he has greatly benefited from his move to West Brom after successful loan spells at Walsall and Brighton last season.

    "We are developing a team for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign and I want players like Paul battling to be part of that.

    "While we want to win every game and will be trying hard to qualify for Euro 2008, the main priority is building a squad capable of mounting a serious challenge in two years' time."

    Full squad: Kenny (Sheffield United), Henderson (Brighton), Colgan (Barnsley), Andy O'Brien (Portsmouth), Dunne (Manchester City), O'Shea (Manchester United), Finnan (Liverpool), Carr (Newcastle), St Ledger (Preston), McShane (West Brom), Douglas (Leeds), S Reid (Blackburn), Kilbane (Wigan), McGeady (Celtic), Ireland (Manchester City), Miller (Sunderland), Kavanagh (Sunderland), A Reid (Charlton), Elliott (Sunderland), Duff (Newcastle), Lee (Ipswich), Keane (Tottenham), Doyle (Reading), Morrison (Crystal Palace), Alan O'Brien (Newcastle).

    Is that Stan throwing in the towel for 2008 already?

    Good to see McShane get the call up. I would prefer to see Whelan and McCarthney get a call up over St. Ledger and Alan O Brien thou.

    Alan Lee back in the squad. 2 goals at the weekend against Sunderland btw. Hopefully he has a sucsessful season.

    I think he means Paddy McCarthy? Ex-City now Leicester captain. Good player but poor discipline, collects too many yellow cards.

    Would love to see Whelan rewarded with his good form already this season, if he got into the squad he might get a move to a bigger club, hate to say it but Wednesday is driving me nuts at the moment, everytime we look like doing something all we hear about is the budget is gone or they are over budget!

    From that Squad we can field a team that should manage 4 points from the two games.

    =========== Kenny ===========

    Carr === Dunne === O'Brien === Finnan

    McGeady === S. Reid === Kav === Duff

    ======= Keane ===== Doyle ======

    I would like to see Miller, Ireland and Any Reid get some pitch time.

    I did think Elliott was injured though.

    My big question is, whats the story with Rory Delap. When he was playing at Southampton he looked a very decent player, did very well for him. By all accounts he wasn't bad at Sunderland - Irish managers don't seem to like him at all.

    I'm suprised Carsley didn't get a call up just to cover the week midfield. I suppose it doesn't tie in with Stan's "building for the future" ethos.

    Andy Reid will not travel to Cyprus. However he may be available for the Czech game.

    I groaned when I saw the building for 2010 crap. We should pick the best players who are available now. Not the players who might be the best in 2 years time. Two teams qualify from our group. With the Czechs on a slight downward curve (blessed to beat Wales), second place is wide open.

    They are the best players available, its just we have no quality so are only other chocies are the youngsters.

    "Building a team for 2010" is just a prexcuse for failing to qualify for Euro 2008.

    anyone get the feelin when looking at the squad it was like looking at a Northern Ireland squad 3 or 4 years ago (no offence to anyone there). We just dont have the players, lacking in quality, numbers and our so called class players are lacking in confidence and form

    Being a Liverpool supporter, I'm a fan of Stan and willing to give him every chance.

    However comments like:

    "We are developing a team for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign"

    and

    "the main priority is building a squad capable of mounting a serious challenge in two years' time."

    when you are one game into the current campaign and have two big games coming up is downright bad management. Obviously he is trying to get his excuses in early and to dampen any hopes the fans and FAI might have of qualifying for the Euros, but he's also saying to the players that while of course we'll try and win every game, this campaign doesnt really matter.

    At the end of the day the squad for 2010 should be of no concern to Steve Stanuton now. He will have sweet fanny adams to do with the qualifty of the squad in two years time. It will mostly depend on what players come through and how all the players are doing at their respective clubs.

    I have no clue whether McShane is any good or not or worth his place in the squad. I hope he's a brilliant prospect. But Stan saying he would like Paul to be "battling to be part of the 2010 campaign" totally flummoxes me. Surely he's already battling to be part of the 2008 campaign???

    Is Lee Carsley not in the squad because he wont be around in 2010? IF thats the reason then its total cock. From what I've seen he's been the best Irish centre midfielder this season - and playing with a premiership team who are on a good run. Lee has clearly stated he's available for selection. I can't see any argument as to why he shouldnt be in the squad. Personally I'd have him in the team alongside Steven Reid in the middle of the park.

    “I am looking forward and the ones that are in there now, I’ve got to give them a chance. It would be easy to take in Lee or Mattie but the others need experience and if I’m looking to the World Cup in 2010, they’ll be the players that are going with us.

    "We’ve got Stephen Ireland coming on, Liam Miller and Jonathan Douglas are getting regular games now, and I’ve got the experience of Graham Kavanagh.

    "To be honest, they’ve all impressed in training and there’s John O’Shea and Kevin Kilbane as well, a nice blend of youth and experience.”

    would prefer to see finnan on the right, even if it means playing JOS - carr is brutal and has no heart or drive, finnan is a great RB (one of the best in the PL) and playing him out of position is crazy.

    How can he ignore a player who retired from international football? he did a season or 2 back when he said he was getting too old and wanted to spend the time off he gets at international games with his family so stan is not ignoring because he isnt an option

    Very disappointed to hear the comments on building for WC qualifiers. Keane, Duff, Dunne, Given, Finnan are at their peak at present or should be in 2 years, in 4 years they'll all be 30 or over.

    He came out of retirement.

    “Of course I am disappointed because I was hoping to be included,” said Carsley.

    “But all I can do is continue to do my best for Everton and just hope that the international door isn’t completely closed because I still want to play for Ireland."

    He came out of retirement almost a year ago if I remember correctly but the media have only been mentioning his name the past couple of months. He said he'd only like to be called up if he had a decent chance of playing as he has a kid with downs syndrome and doesn't want to be spending too much time away if it's pointless. He also said that in a 23 man squad there are usually 5 or 6 that won't really have a chance of playing and he feels those spots should be given to younger players.

    Wow, my 1st soccer post! (ive been on boards yonks, but the whole "sponser a member" thing i just couldnt be arsed)

    Staunton, so far has done the best he could do with either

    a- A first choice team where the only consistsnetly reliable performer is Shay Given

    b- With the Dutch match, the majority of your best players out injured

    We`re forgetting the 3-0 thrasing of the moderately well regarded Sweden.

    Now, because Given is out Im not confident. Bring back Morrison. Keane and Duff havent been reliable for Ireland in 2 years. But really, it doesnt matter if Hiddink or anyone was in charge, we are just having a bad run of injury luck.

    Playing O'Shea and Kilbane in central midfield is not doing the best he could do. A midfield of Duff-Carsley-Reid-McGeady is better than our midfield for the 2002 WC and it would have made a huge difference in Germany.

    that should be the midfield to start the next two games but you just know stan is going to go with..

    Miller/A.Reid - O Shea - Kilbane - Duff

    He's a quick lad alright but i don't think any of us on here has seen enough of him in action to determine if he has ability at this level. We have pacy attackers already in Duff/Keane/Doyle/McGeady anyway.

    I'd like to see make the Newcastle team before he starts getting an International chance.

    I saw the game against Germany. As such I don't think we have any chance of qualifying either.

    If Stan thinks using these qualifiers as a foundation for 2010 is the way to go then I won't mind particularily. Better to actually qualify for 1 thing than nearly qualify for 2.

    I really find it hard to believe how defeatist people have become since the Germany defeat. I think it must be a hangover from the Dutch game where people forget that we were missing most of our best players.

    Germany are one of the best teams in Europe at the moment. By miles the best team in the group. We were playing away to them. They would dominate most teams in Europe at home. Yet the only way they could beat Shay was a fluke. Our lads were outclassed, without a doubt, but they never gave up and we created a couple of clearcut chances to snatch a draw. I believe 1-0 will be their worst home result and they could well through the group with a 100% record.

    We have nothing to fear from Czech, Slovakia, Wales and the rest. Czech's great team is getting old and some are gone. They were very lucky to get a home win v Wales. Wales and Slovakia both seem to be doing quite well, but again nothing for us to be afraid of.

    I'm not defeatist but I'm certainly not a bit confident. My reason is that with Carsley, S.Reid and A.Reid available he decided to play Kilbane and O'Shea in the centre. I don't think any top coach would have even thought of that pairing. They were both the weak links in their club teams and he decided to play them both (out of position imo) in the most important position on the pitch.

    was steven reid available ? I thought he was injured for the german game

    Kenny
    Finnan -- Dunne
    O' Brien -- JoSh ( shudders ) - wouldnt put carr anywhere near the team
    McGeady - S. Reid - Zinedine Kilbane - Duff
    Doyle
    Keane

    would be my preferred lineout anywyas, heh

    whats up with Ian Harte, and if stan is building for the future, why bring carr back from retirement when he should be playing a player that is gonna be involved in the 2010 world cup :rolleyes:

    Top matches are won in Central midfield and Ireland currently don't have one. We have Reid who is a good player, but he has nobody even near his level to play with him.

    I agree with Stan that we should be focusing on 2010 more than 2008. I'd love to see McShane, Gibson, McGeady, et al all put in the team next to Finnan Duffers Keane Given Dunne and just let develop as a team over the next 4 years, for one big push in the WC.
