Joggging knee (ligament?) pain

    Hi

Training for the marathon, and short runs are fine, but after / during long runs there is a pain at the back of my left knee, the pain goes when I take Voltaren tablets which is an anti-inflammatary.

Is this a warm-up / warm -down issue, the pain is much less when I walk for 15 mins before and after the run to warm-up / cool down. It is a pain when bending my knee - other knee is fine.

Is this a serious / common problem ?

    cheers
    fliston

    Hey

is there a lump in the back of the knee?

If so, it could be a Baker's Cyst. In younger athletes the cause may be a torn cartilage meniscus may be the underlying cause.

The syptoms of a Bakers Cyst are:
    • A rounded swelling the size of a golf ball.
    • A sensation of pressure in the back of the joint which can go down into the calf muscle.
    • Difficulties in bending the joint.
    • Aching and tenderness after exercise.

If this sounds like you then get to a state registered physio.

Another problem that can arise is chronic overuse (excessive use of the popliteus muscle) due to poor biomechanics, running surfaces or poor training progression can lead to tendinitis of the popliteus. In this case PM me.

    Good luck.

    Hi FootFax

Thanks a million for the reply - no swelling at all on the knee, front or back, sounds like the second chronic overuse issue - have sent you a pm.

    Cheers

is it near the outside of the left knee? it could be ITB so make sure to stretch your ITB and quads properly
