Short and sweet. Not too sure what I'll join myself, to be honest.

    Clubs listings: http://www.ducac.tcdlife.ie/SportClubs/index.php
    Societies listings: http://www.csc.tcd.ie/socs.php

Or do you have any 'new year' resolutions to write for Trinity News, get involved in the Students' Union, or something else proactive?

    [Mod Edit]
    1) Pimping of socities is not allowed in this thread. (blatant pimping may result in a ban)
    2) OT posts that delve into regulars ranting about stuff freshers don't know or care about will be deleted/moved

Probably the Phil and the Hist(like everyone else), An Cumann Gaelach, Physoc, the Photographic one. Ill join the Fencing and Climbing clubs(maybe just to do a few lessons) and maybe the heraeans one(cos it sounds cool)

I think I might make a stand and not join the Phil or the Hist. I've never been to a Hist debate and I don't think I went to any of the Phil's stuff last year.

I'd like to do something which involves at least a little bit of exercise, but which wouldn't mind me being athletically incapable and chubby. Nothing comes to mind.

Also, I want to learn how to ballroom dance, but I'd prefer to sign up with a girl I know already to prevent the inevitable socially awkward situation where I have to ask a girl to dance. Either a girl or a pretty boy. Pretty enough so that I could pass him off as a girl.

I'll be joining DURNS this year, it will be my token TCD soc. I don't know what I'm going to join out here in frostbitten Mae Newt.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 194 ✭✭Dave Larkin

Obviously I'll be checking all the clubs/societies out during Fresher's Week, but I think I'll volunteer to write for the SU newspaper. That could be good fun.

I'll join Genetics, Soccer, maybe Tae Kwon Do.

The chances are I'll join about ten during Fresher's Week, so the above may be totally inaccurate. :)

I've resisted joining the Phil the last two years, so I might join this year.

I sense we've had this discussion already: so do I. I bought tracksuit bottoms today for the first time in five years.

I'll probably renew membership of phil and hist, also SFSOC sounds pretty good, might give them a try. I'll definately join the Rifle Club, the idea of shooting at things has always greatly appealed to me....

Maybe I'll write a few articles for the Trinity News or the University Record, if I could be arsed.

    Boxing,
    Tae Kwon-Do,
    Netsoc,
    Japsoc,
    DURNS,
    Mathsoc,
    Physoc.

The last three I didn't really have anything to do with last year, and I went to all of two Japsoc film showings...and I might join a few others, maybe One World Soc....dunno...

    Durns
    Jazz soc
    hist + phil
    Youth labour

Probably a random couple of other things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,389 ✭✭✭cianclarke

    Netsoc
    CS Society
    Photographic
    Swimming
    Canoeing
    Cumann Gaelach
    And maybe hist.

    Definates:
    • Hist
    • Phil
    • Modern Languages
    • Chess

    Maybes:

    • Cricket: I'm doing French and Italian, like Beckett did. I might as well play Cricket in Trinners, like Beckett did.
    • Tennis: I do like Table Tennis. I figure this is its running equivalent.
    • The Metaphysical Soc: given the bashing the Phil gets 'round these parts.
    • Comedy: I'm unsure of what this is. If I get to try stand-up, then sign me up. If I get to watch reruns of funny films, don't sign me up. If I get entrance to room in which Hitch plays continuously, sign me up again.
    • Jazz: I can't play a thing, and my ear is still tin, but Jazz, you know, is fairly cool.

    Probably not, but perhaps:
    • The PDs: not keen to label myself, or have something I might regret attached to my name, but I like the idea.
    • Biology: it wouldn't be a bad thing to retain a quasi-understanding of some science.
    • Coffee Drinkers Society: not yet in existence, but I'll sort that out.

Rejoining (that I was active in): The Hist, the LGBT, Ultimate Frisbee, Paintball.

Rejoining (and am actually going to make a stab at participating in this time): the Greens (shut up), Lawsoc, maybe Basketball - I want to find out their training hours first. And also if they mind that I haven't played in over 2 years.

Joining for the first time: The Phil, Pubs (assuming that whole magazine dealy goes ahead; I love writing, but I hold most of our student publications in such deep distaste that I'd feel hypocritical and kinda dirty writing for them), some class of martial art (I know the treasurer of either kendo or kempo or tae kwon do or one of those, so I'll find out which one that is and join that). I'd also like to try for some vague SU involvement; I bitch about it plenty, but I think it does good work.

I'm not getting any sleep at all next year, am I?

Which ones will be having free lunches during Freshers Week?

I'll probably join the Hist and the Phil because I always do, even though I never go near them. Not the most active person but I'm turning over a new leaf so I'll be rejoining the Dance society, and hopefully signing up for Capoeira and yoga too. Don't want to stretch myself too much.

I'll be joining the Climbing soc again, tis a good laugh, and maybe try Trinity FM. Rejoining the VDP, and possibly modern languages (but does this society ever DO anything?) I want to choose ones that are pretty active.

Anyone a member of the Japanese society? Is it new? What does it involve? Is One World any good? What do they actually do?

    Definitely:
The Hist (might as well be conventional)
    The Phil (ditto)
Comedy (refreshments and comedy!? Giggidy giggidy)

    Maybe:
The Literary Society (sounds mighty cultured)
    Politics (depends)
DURNS (only noticed this now, sounds good)

Things I could probably be persuaded into joining by quick-talking folk:
    Volleyball
    Ultimate Frisbee
    The PDs

DUCSS (well am the film officer, so am part of it anyhow)

    Ultimate Frisbee.
Modern Languages (purely for the cocktail parties.)

Paintball (gonna actually get involved this year)
    Netsoc
    Orienteering
    Rifle

    Might join SFSOC and DURNS

Hereans is a bit like the Knights of the Campenile, they pick you rather than vice-versa.

As for me, ehh lots and lots again. Already got started at UCDD Freshers week.

So many societies and clubs... how to choose!!?!

Probably do Judo and go as often as possible, rather than try and do too much... although I really have no idea!

    Some of them sound intriguing....

My plan is to spend 16.50 on a bus ticket and a max of 20 on societies and the rest will be FREE apart from nights out.

Im joining Tennis and Food & Drink cos they're my interests

Think about things, and make witty, if worthless, puns in verse.

Actually, I think they posit themselves as smaller and alternative to the oversized and seemingly impersonal Phil. But I'm sure they make witty puns too.

Metaphysics =~ real philosophy (as opposed to the Phil).

Metaphysical society = primarily a let's assign a student to write and deliver an essay on a particular metaphysical topic and rinse and repeat as many weeks a year as possible.

Oh, and fight with the Cards Society.

Durns = Dublin University Rock Nostaliga Society or Trinity Rock and Alternative Music Society.

John who posts here was last years auditor.

Couple of events planned for freshers' week, gigs and stuff. The computer science society doesn't seem to be active much but the Internet Society is (netsoc) you should join that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 62 ✭✭The_Radiator

Myself I'll be rejoining boxing and judo. I'll also sign up for zoology, durns and netsoc and perhaps scifi and tfm.

In terms of new societys, I'm interested in modern languages, food and drink and Dancing or Dance or what ever it's called. Not sure if I'll join, or if I do whether I'll go to anytihng or not.

Here's your first lesson: It's spelt 'Cumann' (with one 'm').

As for being me being involved in:
Dubiln University Radio Society - Trinity FM (Junior Producer)
Cumann Gaelach Coláiste na Tríonóide (Oifigeach Ríomhaireacht)
Dublin University Traditional Irish Music Society - Tradsoc (Commitee member)

    As for joining:
Dublin University Internet Society - Netsoc
Dublin University Computer Science Society - DUCSS
Dublin University Philosophical Society - The Phil
Dublin University Historical Society - The Hist
Dublin University Rock Nostalgia Society - DURNS
Dublin University Comedy Society - DUCS (again? that is funny!)
Dublin University Drama Society - Players
and many more to be confirmed...

I don't always have time for all of these, but I do like to know what's going on in College in general and mailing lists help with this.

So you're going to pay 2-5 euro to be put on a mailing list?
