    For all the freshers:

When I first started in trinity i hadnt a clue what anyone was talking about ever. People during freshers week would say "do the hist maidens in the gmb with the other freshers", and i would smile and say "okay :) " but really on the inside i'd say "WHAT?! "

Here are some words i struggled with:
    Fresher - first year
hist/phil - the two biggest societies
GMB - a big building with the Hist/Phil, a computer room, debating chambers and apartments, it is past the front square on the left
Campanile - the proper name for the bell tower
    lecky/usher/berkley - libraries
hamilton end - the science end, the opposite side of campus to the arts/main end
maidens - someone else can explain this better!
ents - the ents officer organises all the parties like the mystery tour, trust me when i say i had no clue what ents meant when i first came. don't know where the word comes from (events?)
soc soc pol - for all people doing bess you may hear this alot, it is short for sociology and social policy a similar course to bess

Laugh all you want but believe me there are people who struggle with these words. add to it if you want.

The maidens are a set of debates specifically for maiden speakers, ie anyone who hasn't debated before at university. It's always a good idea to give them a go if debating interests you, they let you practise and hone your skills before plunging into the normal business of the phil/hist.

Thats surprising.... You should come along to the debates, better late than never! Its a mad laugh sometimes (no, really) with plenty of free wine afterwards with some delectable cheese and crackers.

Well there are a very high number of common subjects depending on what course choices you pick in each. Throughout my time during BESS I was in class with people doing SocSocPol in almost all my classes, the only exception were some of my politics courses.

This would particularly be the case for first years where the only difference is SocSocPol do social policy instead of business and have the choice between doing economics of public policy or economics and between law (the introduction bess can do in 2nd year) or maths. If they choose economics and maths & stats there's only one course different.

For Freshers who may not know the Hist and Phil referred to are the Historical Society and the Philosophical society. Broadly ignore the names, they're two debating societies and the maidens are a competition for first years as far as I know. Was never involved with either myself.

    I can't believe no-one's mentioned this one:

The Pav: The Pavilion Bar, i.e., a drinking spot on the eastern side of the cricket pitch.

    A couple of others:

BESS: Business, Economic and Social Studies, i.e., a popular course where one can study Sociology, Political Science, Business and Economics or combinations of the above.

The Record: The University Record, the Students' Union newspaper.

The Trinity News: The College's newspaper, published by Pubs (see above).

MSISS: Management Science and Information Systems Studies, a strange concoction of Engineering, Maths, and Business.

ARAM/Restructuring/Resource Allocation/Etc.: The College's new way of organising faculties, schools, vice-deaneries and departments, and how their budgets are decided.

Front Square: Parliament Square, i.e., the first square encountered when entering College from College Green, home to the SU, Pubs, the CSC, the Student Records Office, the Chapel, the Exam Hall, the Enquiries Office, the Music Department, and lots of other administrative offices and bodies.

Trinity Hall: Student accommodation, run by College, located in Dartry in Dublin 6.

    Hack: See here.

TSM: Two-Subject Moderatorship, i.e., and Arts degree, where one studies two subjects concurrently, e.g.: English and History of Art and Architecture.

CSLL: Computer Science, Linguistics and a Language.

MEMS: Manufacturing Engineering with Management Science.

EuroStuds: (Usually female) students, who study European Studies.

The College Calendar: A colossal work published each year, which states course regulations, general rules, general information, etc.

    Moderatorship:
All moderatorship degree programmes entail a broad base of knowledge of both a general and
particular nature, and the intellectual skills that must be mastered are broadly similar in all areas.
All moderatorship degree programmes seek to impart the following:
    (a) a strong broad base of knowledge that introduces the student to all the main aspects of the
    discipline or disciplines concerned, and to relevant aspects of closely related disciplines;
    (b) advanced expertise in the major subject that provides the students with a thorough understanding
of the basic principles and methodology of the discipline and of the means by which the frontiers
    of the discipline can be expanded and new knowledge discovered;
    (c) a range of intellectual skills that develop as fully as possible the complete range of mental
abilities, i.e. the enlargement and proficiency of mind that has long been a fundamental goal of
    university education.
These skills may be divided into two categories:
    (i) Thinking skills
    These include:
A — the capacity to make sense of what one learns, to analyse and sort data and solve problems
B — to extend what one has learned, to generate new ideas and concepts, to apply what one has
    learned to new contexts
C — to deal with knowledge in a critical way, to develop the capacity to evaluate information
    and ideas.
    (ii) Communication skills
These involve the capacity to organise information and arguments and conclusions, and to
present them in a clear and well-reasoned manner.

    HistPol: History and Political Science

    PhilPol: Philosophy and Political Science

To clarify - is it a coincidence that all 3 of the HistPol people I know are assholes, or does it say something about the type of student the course attracts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭shay_562

    Don't forget:

Schols - Scholarship examinations (for free Commons, accomodation etc), usually taken in SF, but can be taken in any year of college.

Commons - the evening meal served for Scholars, Fellows and their guests in the Dining Hall (which, in turn, is the large hall located on the northern side of Front Square).

Atrium - large room located just off the old Buttery (will this exist next year? Does it need explaining?) where many student societies hold their events.

Also, many of the lecture theatre names can be confusing; off the top of my head, I can remember the Ed Burke and Walton are in the Arts Block, while the Joly is in the Hamilton...anyone else care to fill in some of the other names?

harsh! not all bess girls are oompa lumpas, they actually are a small percentage of **** heads, that sit in same area of lecture hall and mix with no one else becasue seemingly were not good enough or arnt quite oopma lumpa enough

    Good luck with that battle.

True and all as that maybe, the vast majority of people who do BESS literally suffer through Political Science and Sociology in JF and dump them at the first chance.

Why the hell do you think I study in the Ussher?

also: BLU Complex: the Berkeley Lecky and Ussher libraries are all part of the one giant interconnected complex. the Ussher is 4 floors at the back, the berkeley is at the front, and the lecky is between the arts block and the rest of the library.

I don't know the numbers who drop each subject after first year. I'm sure the largest number do their degree in single honours Business or Business & Economics joint honours but a substantial number do Sociology and/or Politics so my point was that the subjects aren't as different as you were suggesting (looking at those who did joint honours in my year, most of those of us who got firsts actually did at least one of them). SocSocPol may not be what you want to do but you still had to study Sociology and Politics for at least a year. There is a substantial number of others who feel for Business and/or Economics the way you do for the other two.

I know plenty of HistPollers who are perfectly sound, but they're all Hist people, so you may not like them.

Really? I know this is the case for me personally, but I know quite a large number of people who are keeping up Political Science next year. Are you actually drawing your "vast majority" assertions on anything other than personal dislike?

My Japanese housemate is doing HistPol, and he's pretty dead on.

I found this thread because I have a course meeting in the Walton tomorrow and have no idea where it is. I would've assumed it was down the Hamilton end, what with him being a scientist and all..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

I like referring to the Phil and the Hist as The Phist, but that's just my ego coming out.

I did have an amusing time on Tuesday or something trying to figure out what the Bell Tower is called, though... "We're at that... thingy.. at the end of the square.. Tall? Fail your exams if you stand under it sometimes... Kinda grey?"

Nah man its in the arts building, on the left side of the college looking in from front gate. You would've had to pass it on your library trip yesterday or been in it for that useless engineering "meeting" on wed.

I think a hack is someone who has extensive involvment in either the SU or societies, thats about it really. Making it more specific is probably trying to fit the definition around people who are considered hacks, I wouldn't say their purpose of involvment like furthering their careers or just contributing to college life have anything to do with being hack, thats more of a personality thing.

It's spelled "campanile" alright. The real question is, how is it pronounced? I say "camp-an-eel" as the French would, but I think I'm in the minority.

ah 1E9. Every Friday at like 1:30 or maybe 1:45 you'll get an email telling you where you have to be for your 1e9 lab at 2pm. Sometimes you'll be in two places at once and other times you can just go home/to the pav. Its like a mystery box where everybody is a winner.

Hmm. It's an interesting point. Of course the point could also be that it's a measure of how long you've been going, and that though all things must pass, some do shine brightly for longer than others, which burn out?

Purplefixtmixer I have to agree, the GMB is home to the Phist and not two separate socs (whatever gave you that idea!). Purely because it's fun t make fun of people who take themselves to seriously. Also I don't want to tar everyone with the same brush, but I definately don't like some members of the Phist and have done since last year when I did schools debating organised by them.

Also, on topic. There's this clothing item people keep mentioning and I can't figure out what it is. A scorf. Wtf is a scorf? Is it some crazy footwear? Or maybe a hat.
