GAME on Henry Street take your name and number and ring you when they are... kind of like a pre-pre-order.

Now that the definites are released, id expect them to take pre-orders pretty soon.

I've heard that play.com don't send electrical goods overseas though so they're are no go as far as I know.

Irish GrumPy had a problem when he ordered his DS.

I was in Smyths the same day and I didn't see anything about pre-orders there either. Although they are supposed to be taking pre-orders.

I was in Game henry street the other day and one of the guys behind the counter was having to explain to a disappointed customer that the PS3 is not out till next march or so.

He basicially then told he customer that Sony had screwed themselves. There was nothing new that you really needed in the new PS3 as all the launch titles would be out for the Xbox 360 beforehand anyway and he should order a 360 now before the christmas rush. There was an offhand mention of Nintendo in there somewhere but there was a definite push towards getting a 360.

Ever get the feeling the wii is going to be the cinderella of the consoles again from the point of view of retailers? I wonder is there a much bigger margin on 360s as opposed to Wiis?

Of course this was all before the launch date was announced. Maybe it will all change.

Smyths are definitely doing preorders. I've already preordered myself a Wii there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

I might have to give Smyths a phone then. My mother works DIRECTLY beside one so I'll be ordering her to collect my goodie bag :D

    Zelda will own Christmas.

It's a 25 euro deposit so I doubt they take preorders over the phone.

I wouldnt risk a console through play. For the simple reason that you would be missing out on that first weekend with it if they didnt get it to you on the Friday.

Normally when you try to order something on play that they wont ship to your address, the site stops you and tells you you cant order it and why. With the wii it seems to let an order go past that stage, just tried it (it does with the ds too though so if someones had a problem with ordering those I dunno)

GAME on Dawson Street aren't taking pre-orders you say? Unless I'm mistaken they had a sign advertising the Wii and something like "pre-order your wii today" written underneath.

I had pre-ordered mine in Smyths aswell. HMV are now taking pre-orders too. I imagine the rest are or will follow soon.

Game are taking pre-pre-orders, so you put your name on a list and when they figure out thier rough stock expectations they ring the people on the list and offer them a chance to come in and pre-order.

Personally I put my €25 smackers down in Smyth's yesterday... although I felt let stepping away when the guy behind the counter told me "Nobody knows exactly when it's out, but definitly sometime in November but this is what it looks like *small giggle and point to picture on desk* " , surprisingly, at least the guy in Game knew it was coming on the 8th.

I put my deposit down in Gamestop yesterday, then again a mate of mine works there, but I think they could be taking pre-orders from today.

    From Play.com...

"We currently only send electronics and gadgets to UK addresses and for security reasons we can only send electronics and gadget items to the billing address of your account."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,412 ✭✭✭✭Headshot

would it be cheaper to buy it online compared to certain rip off shops like gamestop

It probably hadn't been tagged in their database as an item that won't get shipped here yet because it is so new. More than likely, you'll get a mail over the next few days\weeks telling you they can't complete the order or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,870 ✭✭✭mikeruurds

Game in Dundrum had the "Pre-order your Wii today" sign up, but told me that they weren't taking preorders yet.

Guess I'll be taking my money to Smyths then :D

Play is only used, to get dvds and cheap Pc games..
but is this a post about Play.com nah..

anyhoo .. err i reckon HMV would be a good place to book it if you are a student so you get that 10% off :)

also who reckons retailers will be adding an extra cost to the price of the Wii

Will it definitely cost €249 in all stores ?

Zelda for Christmas again zomg, it will be like Ocarina of Time all over again *wipes the drool*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

Thought the HMV student discount wan't valid for hardware - or am i wrong? :)

Anyways, is the new Trauma Centre a launch title?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43 nellyrev

you are right about the hardware , i should know that it was like that when i got my xbox (quite a boring machine)

Trauma Centre is schedule for Wii launch and but on IGN.com they talk so much about games releasing at launch but what they mean is launch window in which case it could be January when you see the game.. or not who knows!!

As far as I know there's a tiny margain on every console; something like 10-15%; shops make their money on the software and accessories (usually the 3rd party ones too).

On the Wii becoming the Cinderella, I think it's a catch-22 situation; stores will only give it space/time if it sells well, but it's often the case that things will only sell well when given the space/time by stores. Saying that I think Game etc. will expect a big rush at launch at the very least, and that guy was probably only pushing the 360 because he could possibly convince the customer to buy it there and then, and not at some point in the future.

HMV usually over charge for games anyway so might not be the best place.

As for it definitely costing 249 well I'm not sure about that. Some places like Game have overcharged for consoles at launch or made you buy a bundle of a minimum of a console, an awful game and some other useless accessory. I'm going with symths since they have usually been the best for price with new games although I've no experience with them and console launches. You also get 10% off on all games on the week they are released.

Gamestop might be a decent place to buy one. When I got a DS at launch they didn't force a bundle but the bundles they offered were very good. They included a console, game and an accessory kit thrown in for free and a load of money off vouchers.

I left my name and number with the guys in Game in The Square, apparently was first on their list for it, and that was Thursday. Said when they get their pre-order details that they'll call me. If its not a good deal I'll have to find a smiths... Only one I know of is the one up at Blanchardstown. Anybody know one nearer Citywest?

Just got this from a fellow of mine temporarily incarcerated at gamestop:
Just got an email from the big boss saying the wii is coming out on the 8th of december, with a price of 259/269 euro, the games between 50 and 60 euro - according to the official press release on friday that is, and you can go to the shop and preorder one if you like.
Don't like it being over €250, don't like it at all. Reckon I'll take my chances with smyths.

As far as I know hmv dont do student discount on the games at all anymore. its just their points card where you build up points which turn to money. and it never applied to hardware.

and yea I do believe trauma center is a launch game but its jsut pretty much the same game as the DS

i live in bray and i know we have gamestop there but i would never buy a console in there :p smyths may be a good choice (i got my gamecube there) and true about the 10% off... :)

also i remember when i got my gamecube that the shop was empty on that launch day which meant everyone had already got theirs and left or no1 like to buy a console in a kids store :p

i just hope i can use the the card i have (i have had it quite a while)!!

Yeah, dude there's a Smyth's right beside the Abberly Court, just outside the Square (exit the bottom level, walk out past mcdonald's, carry on straight past the Abberly court hotel on your right, and you'll see it on your left.)

I haven't been there in a while, but it used to have quite a large/good software zone.

Arrr. Me sweet wench put down 25 pieces on a Wii today. 250 pieces for the whole trove by all accounts. Alas, she put her gold down with those scurvy dogs, Gamestop. (splice) That would be in the vile surrounds of Henry St. in that Den of Dispicable Dastards, Dublin.(/splice)

They'll get a taste of my blasted revenge one day.

    Hi,
New to consoles, never owned one, want to get the Wii. I'v a friend who can get me one from the US in November but I'm worried about compatablity over here. Is there any problems with regions (as with DVDs)? Will games bought here in Ireland work on a Wii bought in the US? Same with accesories and controllers, any problems with compatablity. Or am I better off pre-ordering in Ireland and getting it that way.

    Thanks,
    Bacchus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

The Wii is not region-free, so I wouldn't bother getting an American one unless you're prepared to only buy games from the States (or wait for some sort of region hack/mod chip). It was confirmed it is region-locked. Sorry.

Arrr... I be forgetting about this grand day if twere not for you!!!

I be complaining to dar scurvey dogs at Game in Limerick, they will surely ask for more than 250 pieces for dar wii...arr. In fact, when I were in port a few days ago, the kind wench o'er the counter shivered me timbers when she said that "250 is the recommended price for a wii and it will probably be more than that"

Arrrr...Pirate Futureguy told her that "i'll send you to Davy Jones' Locker with talk like that!" I've set sail for the sweet shores of Smyths with my booty in tow. Arrrrr!!!

    hey Clover welcome aboard :)

if you are finding yourself with more cash than you need to purchase a Wii,
i would recommend you purchase some GameCube controllers/memory cards and perhaps Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, and perhaps F-Zero GX before those games and accessories die out!!

lets hope that they do not die out or else its pointless to have the backwards compatibility if you are a new comer!!

thanks for the welcome and for the tips on gamecube controllers / mem cards .

i was thinking of looking into gamecube games like metroid prime ,resident evil and others that i have missed out on as well as a few wii games to keep me busy this xmas.

last year it was a 360 + psp xmas but this year it's looking all nintendo .

If you can get your hands on Mario Sunshine, give that a go too. Marvellous.

I'm not sure about pre ordering until i see prices and bundles if any.

I asked in Game Dawson street yesterday, and they had nothing definite apart from the date. They're not taking orders until friday, either.

I wish i could talk like a pirate...

Im gonna have to put my name down when I'm in next! Zelda!!
The only question is, should I wait until Christmas to play it?
