Muscle turned to fat?

About 2 years ago I started running alot between 5-10K runs 3 days a week, more at the weekends. My calf muscles got really huge and hard/toned but since I was running I didnt mind. I have stopped running for about 8 months now and my calf muscles have gone much softer but they are still huge, they are still the same size as they were while I was running but they are not "hard", (if that makes any sense). It looks to me like all the muscle I built up running has turned to fat. I expected them to go back to the way they were before I increased my running. I've read that muscle doesnt turn to fat when you stop training but it seems to me that it has.

or maybe the amount of muscle has slightly decreased but you have put on some excess fat now that you aren't running as much hence giving your calfs that squidgy feeling

Muscle doesn't turn to fat. Its not physically possible.

most likely ^^^, or another option is that they haven't been used in a long time and have lost residual tonus as they atrophy? What kind of bodyfat levels are you carrying now versus then?
